jQuery plugins depended on jQuery, and when jQuery went out of favor, they ended up in the junkyard.

There is all sorts of componentry built exclusively on React, limiting it to React-based sites. As React goes out of favor, they will end up in the junkyard. (Same with any framework-specific extension.)

But with Web Components... it seems like the story will end differently. If they are built without dependencies, they might just live as long as the web does.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@chriscoyier I think the snag for me is that a LOT of Web Components are being built with dependencies, which seems to defeat the whole point. I agree with you otherwise. The issue is dev behavior, not the tech itself.

Heard and respected. Personally never have used that word.

However; here is another take on that word and who gets to use it - as a conversation between a Black person and an Indonesian. https://youtu.be/dbcidd8CuYs?si=-p53J-cf0Jl4xdgT

The TL:DR is - white people: just don’t. Some Black people are fine with it and some aren’t (peoples are not monoliths); intent matters a lot. (But again, white people, we are assumed to have a certain context whether or not we individually do. So don’t.) https://mastodon.online/

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@mattwilcox I cannot imagine any situation where white people can EVER say it, in any context. Just don't.

To those Americans getting offended that their president and country are being criticised for arming a genocide may I just remind you that there is something a tad more offensive than being criticised for arming a genocide which is arming a goddamn genocide. Get some fucking perspective.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@aral offended? Nope. Just wondering what the end game is? Get Trump elected instead?

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@tadbithuman @aral yea we want that too

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@Radical_EgoCom @tadbithuman @aral Democrats won’t give a fuck. They don’t care.

The end result of not voting for Biden isn’t “the genocide stops.” It’s “now we have Trump and things get even worse”.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@steviesyerda @aral and yet, the average American, cannot make Biden do anything, cannot will my country into a place that has a viable third-party candidate and have to live with the everyday repercussions of Trump being elected.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@Radical_EgoCom @tadbithuman @aral I was commenting specifically to Aral, who is it various times implied that Americans just shouldn’t vote for Biden if he doesn’t stop supporting genocide.

I wish the American political system made that an actual possibility.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@sharonecathcart @Radical_EgoCom @tadbithuman @aral I disagree with this, personally. He’s staunchly, publicly pro-Israel and denied they’ve done war crimes.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@steviesyerda @aral Of course not. But Aral shouting at Americans that Biden sucks isn't going to stop people from dying, either. So again... what's the fucking point of this?

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@steviesyerda @aral Non-Americans shouting at Americans about how much Biden sucks isn't pressuring Biden to do anything

aardrian, to accessibility
@aardrian@toot.cafe avatar

I have been reading through the State of HTML 2023 results site (https://2023.stateofhtml.com/) and I am so disappointed in the overall efforts — both in the questions and in the code.

This may become a blog post.

I filed 3 issues today, have filed 15 since late 2022, and only 2 have been addressed:
https://github.com/Devographics/Monorepo/issues/created_by/aardrian

But these surveys keep pushing problematic info in problematic UIs, giving the wrong impression of… everything.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@aardrian having seen what I’ve seen from the survey creator’s other surveys and commitment (or lack thereof) to diversity and inclusion, I’m not even remotely surprised.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@aardrian My understanding was free advice was given multiple times but not acted upon. They also solicited a "web components expert" for help, but for $0 pay.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@sachagreif @aardrian making a joke of how “young white guy” your survey audience is really drives home the point, doesn’t it?

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@christianoliff @sachagreif @aardrian I wouldn’t say I missed it 🙄

@DavidDarnes I wish discourse wasn’t so JavaScript heavy. we really need more modern interpretations of old-school forums.

What happens when you mandate masks at a conference now that most people no longer wear them but medically vulnerable people are still at risk because ? In the case of , the conference sells out.

Why a masking policy? “Many of us and our fellow community members can’t attend without health and safety guidelines in place. We want PyCon US to be an event that everyone feels safe attending,” organizers explained.

Well done @pycon https://fosstodon.org/@pycon/112445571644276379

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@smach @pycon OMG this just fills my heart. I’ve been so frustrated by the number of conferences, particularly those that are supposed to be about accessibility, that do not require masking or provide a safe space for their most vulnerable attendees.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@chriswood @smach @pycon Right? I don't get all of the hand-wringing over wearing them.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@chriswood @smach @pycon being the only one very much sucks. Perk of being neurodivergent, though, is that I’m used to being the odd one out and don’t care anymore.

Well the tapwater has to be boiled, and the milk is full of flu, this will be a good year for tea with lemon.

Anyone ruins the lemons, we open fire.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@lhgmk2 I feel the need to mention that the bird flu in milk is inactivated through pasteurization and cannot make you sick. Well that can of course change in the future, unless you’re drinking raw milk, you’re fine for now.

If you have a version of your resume in HTML, I’d love to see it! For learning/curiosity/inspiration.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@bw thanks! I prefer to use a project based format for my résumé instead of job-based. I feel like it lets me highlight my skill set better given how much open source and consulting work I’ve done.

It’s a format that also works really well for early career folks who don’t have a lot of experience, but may have done a lot of learning projects.

A response to @cferdinandi 's recent post(s) on JavaScript and Web Components:
https://dev.to/maxart2501/javascript-is-not-the-problem-k4e

I know he didn't explain his position in details, so a 1800-word article sounds a little unfair, but I think dry and sharp statements need adequate context and analysis.

cferdinandi,
@cferdinandi@mastodon.social avatar

@MaxArt2501 @simevidas Sorry, re-reading this and realizing what you're asking. Payloads of that size are very common with React apps. Do they need that much? Of course not. But it would mean rebuilding them without React.

And back to my original point: a lot of that HTML doesn't and shouldn't require JS at all. JS is in fact the problem.
