Threads has entered the fediverse. (Yes, it's opt-in by default)

I appreciate @pcottle's entreaty to the attendees of the #FediForum to engage with the Threads team genuinely.

Meta/Facebook have a mixed track record when it comes to open formats/standards (fool me once, etc etc); but at the same time, ushering in 130M potential new users to an open, social web is also an opportunity not to be dismissed out of hand.

I am optimistic that the current team is showing up with good intent and I intend to reflect that.

I don’t know when this changed, but the purchase history page in the App Store got an update.

It won’t let you see more than a year at a time, but it does give you more details which is kinda cool.

X drops the "Trust" from their "Trust & Safety" team.

Now it's just "Safety", which is a two point score in football when the offensive team is tackled, loses possession of the ball, or commits a foul in their own end zone. 🏈

Spotted this in a recent Superhuman webinar.

Internally, they've added inline integrations to Airtable and Linear to the text selection UI.

Seems like a perfect extension point for other email-focused Chrome extensions... any takers?

We go pretty deep contrasting #ATProtocol and #ActivityPub, discuss challenges with "creator mobility" and touch on opportunities to serve the decentralized social web.

TechCrunch covers the controversy over @snarfed.org's Bluesky-Mastodon bridge:

"With the help of constructive feedback from the Github discussion, Barrett decided to build what he calls a “discoverable opt-in.” That way, users on either side of the bridge have to request to follow accounts from across the bridge, and then that user will get a one-time pop-up asking if they want their accounts to be bridged across the two networks or not."

At first glance, I don't... detest 's announcements.

I get they're trying to diversify, so they threw a bunch of spaghetti at the wall. Some stuck, some didn't. Seems pretty normal when going through a phase like that, no?

VPNs? Email relays? Saturated markets, tough to compete, makes sense to scale back. 3D worlds? Companies much larger have tried and failed, makes sense to drop it.

Mastodon instance? How many people do you need to run one? Scaling back probably makes sense too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The amount of dogpiling and outright bile I've seen in this discussion around the BlueSky bridge disgusts me. @snarfed.org@snarfed.org is a great guy, fully open source and a huge proponent of the . This outright misunderstanding of what it means to be 'federated' yet still have the gall to attack this person saying he's against federation is beyond me. WE CAN DISAGREE! But we don't have to act like Twitter rejects. We are better than this.

@scottjenson @micron ...which is along the lines of what he's considering:

"What if, the first time someone on Bluesky requests to follow someone on the fediverse via the bridge, the fediverse user gets prompted, “X from Bluesky wants to follow you. Are you ok with connecting with Bluesky?”, maybe via DM."

chrismessina,

@micron @scottjenson Unfortunately people don't tend to pay attention to things until they are affected or something is real. @snarfed.org@snarfed.org has been working on this stuff for years, publicly and in the open. He's solicited feedback throughout. Why people didn't raise concerns (and propose solutions) sooner is anyone's guess.

@micron @scottjenson Pursuing failure is not arrogance; it's pragmatism.

But, by all means, please do point me to "very well documented general consensus", because I don't believe that it exists, generally speaking.

RIP mozilla.social?

"Scaling back investment mozilla.social: With mozilla.social, we made a big bet in 2023 to build a safer, better social media experience, based on Mastodon and the Fediverse. Our initial approach was based on a belief that Mozilla needed to quickly reach large scale in order to effectively shape the future of social media. It was a noble idea but one we struggled to execute. While we resourced mozilla.social heavily to pursue this ambitious idea, in retrospect a (1/2)

more modest approach would have enabled us to participate in the space with considerably greater agility. The actions we’re taking today will make this strategic correction, working through a much smaller team to participate in the Mastodon ecosystem and more rapidly bring smaller experiments to people that choose to live on the mozilla.social instance."
