How do most people learn about power?

What do they learn?

Who do people think of when they think about people who study power? (interested in names, not whether you agree with them)

I learned informally about power via those "top of the food chain" posters from late grade school or middle school, you know the ones with a man at the top of a pyramid?

In college, Foucault was the only person I recall being specifically -called- a "power theorist"

@Eka_FOOF_A morning! thanks, that's where I think most people learn, from general social interactions...but probably not from directly being around reigning monarchs!!!

"The state House majority leader, Maureen Terry, said in a statement on Friday that the Democratic-controlled Legislature would “be compelled to act in order to restore fairness,” should Nebraska’s Republican governor sign legislation that made the state a winner-take-all election in 2024.”

@StillIRise1963 I am very confused by this article...due to Maine very recently (like a week ago) passing a popular vote compact which guarantees their 4 votes will now go to the winner of the popular vote of the US, not -their- state totals.

They no longer will proportionally divide their electoral votes…so, I'm quite confused by the premise of the whole article. Do you have more insight into this?

https://www.maine.gov/governor/mills/news/governor-mills-allows-national-popular-vote-legislation-become-law-without-her-signature-2024

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

@StillIRise1963 yeah, you're right, and I was just editing my reply to reflect that😆 So they -will- currently be dividing their votes proportionally unless the interstate compact takes effect. Thanks

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

@Aviva_Gary @StillIRise1963 yeah, can't believe I forgot that little detail! oops.

Double oops for me since I actually had been boosting the effort, and urging people to bug their state legislators if their state hasn't signed on to the effort.

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

@StillIRise1963 @Aviva_Gary

I'm glad Maine is ready to change up their counts if necessary, and I'm sure Nebraska won't pass the Interstate Compact right now, but people in Nebraska (and other states) can still read about the efforts in their states and bug their legislators!

It is so fascinating to me, that of all the things that have changed in the world, the 60 min/sec has remained basically the same throughout recorded history. I'm talking Ancient Sumeria, so let's be real, probably before that too. Other than some real fun guys during the French Revolution, we really stuck with this.

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

@RickiTarr never thought of that before really…

it's amazing how -many- things people learn from being socialized into cultures that we hardly even think to question.

why would you decide that 60 of a thing would add up to a unit. And the 24 hours in a day thing? In that case, why a base of 12?

BlackAzizAnansi, to random
@BlackAzizAnansi@mas.to avatar

If there's one thing I hope that people have picked up on, it's that they're not just fighting Biden for change, they're fighting decades old institutions which are well connected and funded for change, which is a lot harder than trying to convince 1 person to change their policy.

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi so true esp in the US. For quite some time, we've grown, but they haven't.

Gatekeeping tactics at the highest levels of power have NOT really changed at all.

In far too many cases, it's still only the people willing to go along with bullshit who are allowed to ascend to -the most- powerful positions.

Institutions hire "fair and justice oriented" people at lower levels for functionality and good PR, but at the top it's all domination and force. Still.

@CandaceRobbAuthor @StillIRise1963 it certainly is the same dynamic over and over

It seems like in any culture touched by any version of colonialism: old school is: might makes right (power over/dominator society) vs far more people -eventually- wanting and supporting collaborative nurturing societies (power with)

@StillIRise1963 lycos.com is still in business and I get better results from it than DDG, but it was bought by a digital marketing company not too many months ago, so we'll see. Ecosia gives me diddly squat answers for anything you'd need a good encyclopedia for. Same with Mojeek- good for some stuff, but <gasp> not US centric. I used DDG for a couple of years, but got a bit disillusioned by them TechDirt showed how they were being removed from results...

It's not that we're so different from other girls, or boys for that matter. We've had our brains so infiltrated by gender stereotypes and ideals from such a young age, that by the time we get old enough to realize we are unique humans with our own distinctive character, we feel like we need to shout this from the rooftops. Every person is unique, no matter the gender, some just get more of a chance to exercise the right of individualism than others.

Hot take time: patriarchy (or any unearned privileged position) gives far too many mediocre people short term highs (like speed or crack does)

Hit that thing a few times and MOST people's judgements will become pretty impaired

Soon the users only listen to others who use the same crutches, and eventually you get a bunch of total meth heads thinking they are the bomb

Healthier people try to keep away from it.

Ah well, woulda shoulda coulda. At least some groups are publishing this now.

Can anyone else think of other times when certain folks were incredibly eager to paint people standing up for peace and equity as…unruly violent mobs of unhinged rioters?

Just every single previous time ever.

The real unhinged folks are not above infiltrating protests to make movements look bad- early George Floyd protest: one lone white guy smashing windows- turned out to be…a white supremacist-

remember this when you see breathless news reports about violent/ bigoted …peace mongers.

cjpaloma,

does anti semitism exist- yup, and like any other ism, it's horrible that it exists,.

But being vocally against a government's violence on another group of people NEVER makes a person an antisemite … these are entirely different things.

Folks at UC San Diego were able to access over 1 million records to try to "find genetic components" of PTSD.

We learn this "could" "eventually" help in treatment of the 250 million folks affected by it.

You know what would be exponentially better, where sane decision makers would focus most? PREVENTION !!

But that would involve -adjusting social structures so make it much harder for people behave abusively* towards others- which is -by far- the leading cause of the disorder.

1/2 or 3

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

PTSD does affect those that have suffered traumatic losses as a result of accidents.

But the disorder that is often referred to as "a normal reaction to abnormal events' is -far- more frequently caused by intentional violence by humans against humans.

Reducing violence is labelled "political" so those efforts stall out regularly.

And now add capitalism: those in the "hard sciences" get millions for stuff that "could" "eventually" "help" (and help Big Pharma profit)

I mean, I know TONS of people are not really very politically tuned in,

And I also know tons of people do not have the time or inclination to think deeply about political implications or strategies, so please, do go ahead and vote blue no matter who. It -is- better than any other current alternative.

but geeezus, at least don't be a walking example of the Dunning Kruger effect by offering jingoism in the face of valid criticisms about shit you pretty obviously don't understand.

For well over 100 years, those in power have fought really hard and often VERY dirty against anything left of unbridled unregulated crony capitalism, and white male christian patriarchy.

It's kind of amazing how spoiled and abusive they've been, really.

What a sad way to live life- always defensive about uppity lefties trying to take your privileges away,, always trying to pretend you're not being an abusive bigot.

Thinking about what are called "affiliative needs" and how much they influence people to conform to common social norms.

Having positive social interactions with others is important to virtually all people…but in widely varying degrees.

Those with high affiliative needs -may- be more compliant in going along with arbitrary policies.

So its qualities have been studied and exploited in some areas.

There's even a "affiliative leadership style" aspiring managers can learn to mimic.

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

It's not an area I have studied very deeply, mostly because it's usually been presented like a universally adaptive quality, like religiosity used to be.

And almost anyone can see that "going along to get along" isn't always a truly adaptive quality.

It's pretty interesting how in the general field of psychology some qualities with obvious down sides have been hyped as "adaptive".

While other qualities that -are- adaptive like compassion and empathy weren't deeply studied at first

cjpaloma,
@cjpaloma@mas.to avatar

...until more women got into the field. Women who were socialized to be these things, started to study them more in depth. So in the past 50 years, there's a bit more research into these qualities (which are far more important to the survival of the species than warring will ever be).

So I guess my point is there are ALWAYS political/cultural aspects to what gets studied and what gets deemed "adaptive" in any social science.
