How come I've suddenly had three furries (that I actually know too) follow me on just now ? X>
I haven't even used it in a year or so.

Anyone here make the jump/upgrade from Proxmox 7 to 8?
How did it go? How long it take roughly? Any suggestions on guides (besides official documentation) or any issues to report or things to prepare for or check?
Been meaning to do it but dreading it. (And also dreading to find out it’s easy and I’ve delayed for nothing).
(maybe too, In case anyone else is hosting their instance or other stuff off PM).

@stooovie well I am currently passing thru a dedicated AMD GPU to a Win11 VM right now… hopefully that doesn’t fully break.
Wasn’t very hacky to get working before IIRC so hopefully stays that way!

I wonder how many furries are only on Threads.

I have a small instance - hellions.cloud 😈

Things I have changed:

  • character limit

Things to investigate if I can:

  • number of pinned limit
  • image compression (reduce)
  • other media limits
  • ??? (thoughts / ideas)

Anyone done those yet?

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@dannotdaniel I didn’t bother with messing with compression settings since other instances will just apply their defaults anyway.
I guess the benefit is that stuff posted on your own instance is higher quality at least, and those that browse it locally get to see.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@dannotdaniel of course :(

Yeah kinda would be nice if it just streamed directly from the source, but then again that could potentially blow up your bandwidth (every pic being streamed for every single impression vs synched to other instances when the post goes out).

There are some masto alternatives for ActivityPub that come with better quality defaults out of the box (so that helps others that use the same platform at least) but that still doesn't help w/masto recompressing. weak link.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@dannotdaniel (or if it just downloaded the source file when syncing to other instances and didn't try to recompress it. I could see that being exploited though where domains attempt to DDOS other domains by having very large files on them perhaps? would cause others to fill up faster if not applying their expected compression settings? just a guess as to why it's implemented the way that it is.)

What if there was a thermos that had some sort of built-in heat pump thing? Like the heat or cold of the fluid inside is enough to drive some reaction of the refrigerant? But would need some kind of additional power source too.

Since the Hinds County Election Commission only allows public records requests to be submitted by snail mail or facsimile, I pulled out my 1940s Royal Typewriter to fill out the form for period appropriateness.

Because clearly, newer technologies like email do not yet exist.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@ashton @SoulEmber I’ve done this very thing with my Selectric before. Yeah it’s ridiculous.
At least align it! Can drop platen and fold paper around it and line up the corners and raise back up again.

Holy cow, this might actually get me to use Signal! I've hated their "phone number as username" policy since day one. https://community.signalusers.org/t/public-username-testing-staging-environment/56866

just checked a major review site and not a single smart TV was released in the past two years without integrated ads that you can't opt out from or disable. that's depressing.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@azonenberg @gsuberland @YsengrinWolf they're embedding the "smart" shit onto the same board with the LCD drivers, and that's not something easy to recreate? I don't see that working out very well. TVs are also a royal bitch to ship around.

The easiest way to get a "dumb" tv is to buy a commercial display/tv. More expensive up front but free of all the "smart" junk. Better prices found with used ones, as businesses shut down or upgrade to new stuff. Try to find runtime first tho.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those calling for total gun confiscation from all Americans are overlooking that American cops would be tasked with confiscation.

American cops: some of the most racist fuckers on the planet, getting to decide whose guns to take. And some are Nazis, too.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@Adorable_Sergal @DeltaWye that's not how that would work though? not how it should anyway.
Didn't Australia or NZ have a system where the gov would buy your guns? It was all voluntary. looked it up yeah they both did. Looks like NZ's had some misteps but eh, quite a bit were bought back. It can be done.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@Adorable_Sergal @DeltaWye Imagine if there was a gov bounty for specific weapons that could be sent to help Ukraine. We're already making new weapons for them, may as well thin things out over here, and help equip/support them?

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@Adorable_Sergal @DeltaWye voluntary, as in not mandatory or compulsory.
Those psychos in that pic can keep their guns [for now, sadly]. But at least those who're fine with selling…great, at least it's something. one step. any step is better than zero steps, where we're at now.
(And this wouldn't be some door-to-door cops acting like girl scouts to buy guns, that's not how it works either)

sometimes I really hope that people understand that "Desktop Linux" isn't what it was 20 years ago.

20 years ago you could actually sort of run a desktop, but it required things like wrapping the windows drivers of your USB WIFI dongle and praying that the driver and chipset would accept this.

These days, GNU/Linux has actually overtook Mac on the Steam leaderboards, it is being sold on highly rated consumer gaming devices (Steam Deck)

If something doesn't run on Linux, that thing is at fault

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@anthropy @chirpbirb my first 5yrs of messing around with linux were pretty much made up around NDISwrapper-hell.
Yeah linux on the desktop has made HUGE strides, as I'm currently learning/experiencing again.

I can't speak to nix but here's a list of a bunch of other common /utils that have been rewritten in (most of these) and also enhanced too sometimes.

How do people go through life not knowing what weevils are? I was talking about ants to a teacher the other day and mentioned something about weevils & they were like "what are weevils?"

"Like beetles but with the long snoot to drill acorns and trees."

"drill acorns!?"

"That's how they end up hollow"

"oh."

"That's how acorn ants have a place to live!"

"oh. I didn't know so much was going on in acorns."

"That's not even the tip of the iceberg!"

I'm astonished.

colinstu,

@futurebird I’ve heard of the name but never knew anything lived inside acorns. TIL
