@NASA says this green light photographed on Jupiter by Juno is "lightning." I say it's an alien lighthouse in the science-fiction novel I'll never have time to write.
Honestly, I think even if Meta does wall off their upcoming twitter clone, I feel like it'll be inevitable that they'll piss people off to the point where they would rather pack their bags and move to the wider fediverse.
@BlackAzizAnansi@lawyerjsd I wouldn't jump to agree with this but I saw a few Meta ads on tv yesterday. I had not seen anything as out of touch as these from a tech company since the Bill Gates BSoD.
@stux Since you invited talking, I'll have one simple question.
Why is it "let's welcome them in and wait to see if they do something bad to see if we need to kick them out" but not "let's watch from a distance what they are doing and see if they're really alright before letting them in"?
This way they can use ActivityPub, and everyone has less to worry about, right? Where am I going wrong?
My question is more about how the issue is framed by admins to the users of the fediverse.
Instead of saying "we're pro until we need to not be", saying "we're apprehensive but not de facto dismissive" (paraphrase as needed) could work PR wonders.
Maybe that's what's being said and I'm interpreting it in a more alarming way than needed but given what everyone knows about Meta, some apprehension is warranted I'd say.
Here's the Fediverse version of "celebrities" with exactly 1 subscriber so far... the person who claimed to be the former moderator of the celebrities sub-reddit. https://kbin.social/m/celebrities
@mekkaokereke My only issue with the "wait and see" approach is the default stance of "let's welcome them first, and then block with two clicks if needed." Why not "let's watch and observe first, and then, if they seem alright, federate with two clicks," if all it takes is two clicks anyway?
Yesterday, users of mstdn.social instance lost their connections to artists at mastodon.art instance ( src: https://framapiaf.org/@Curator@mastodon.art/110570978375947500 ). I hope giving visibility to this issue will help them to restore the broken bridges.
I've never been more convinced that Mastodon is systemically doomed than when I saw someone criticize the admin of a popular instance for defederating from THEIR instance due to their criticism of that admin not preemptively defederating from another instance.
What’s amusing about Bluesky is they have this weird impression that the Fediverse is all geeks and old timer Linux rebels looking to be hall monitors and speech police for society, while serving as watchdogs for our LGBTQI friends. This, in contrast to their daily “Skeets” which can sometimes start from breaking news, but often morph into this weirdly genteel, gen-x pundit idolatry, when it’s not feeling like Instagram for coastal elites.
@arstechnica I wonder how would a wired cosmic ray navigation system would look like now, as well as what sort of robots and autonomous vehicles it could be used to guide
