The W3C publishing ethical web principles is like OPEC publishing ethical climate principles.

Who are the members of the W3C?

Google,
Facebook (Meta),
Amazon,
Adobe,
SoftBank,
Yahoo!,

The W3C is the standards body of surveillance capitalism.

Ethical principles? W3C? Don’t make me laugh!

If they had any ethics they’d have expelled their most prominent members starting with Google and Facebook.

@aral I first thought this is Aprils fools day because the irony is too high in these principles 😅 only a minority of the 375 members would be in line with these.

@jimmyb how was it? Smooth or any hiccups?

This year for Christmas I will be taking time off from everything. After all the recent excitement in my life I need a break. Will stay solo and try to find my inner peace. Been awhile since I last had a real rest.

Just so we are clear on this: any subscription for a digital service is equivalent with the removal of ownership. So please, support people making things you want by buying it. Don’t support conglomerates, fancy new economy crap, ownership is a great concept as long as you spend money you worked for.

Downloading to my since my daughter and her boyfriend highly recommended it. Looks nice but afraid that’s not targeting my generation 😅

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb Just tried first time, and had the Ally wired up to a big 4k display. Turns out, that looks quite nice, sounds nice, and gave me some chuckles from the start. I think I like this game 😄

Meanwhile in Windows 11 territory I am trying to get my ASUS ROG Ally to a usable state after its first boot. At this point it has taken six hours with gigabit speeds to download updates and the nightmare continues. Compared to my daily driver Arch Linux I can not comprehend why people still use Windows. The experience is abysmal. Only thing that worked flawless was WSL2… turns out that running Wine provides a smoother gaming experience than the real thing.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb the device itself seems speedy enough. Done all firmware updates, I even tried cloud recovery to get a bigger NVMe disk in. It seems a Windows 11 update somehow blocks all things.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb it seems to be KB5027303 update, download slow as hell and it blocks everything. Finding it a little suspicious it’s called Preview Update when I did not enable any early or insider updates. When I stop this I can actually run Steam and friends just fine.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb that one is definitely broken. Windows keeps downloading it to 100%, fails to execute it, trashes it and starts from scratch. Meanwhile the device is becoming quite toasty warm.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb it seems that by default armoury crate switches to full power mode when connected to power. That was the cause. Custom power profile is the answer here.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb could not figure out but after numerous retries it finally worked 😩 wasted half a day and not a single game played

Finished migrating from Gitlab to Forgejo with the Act based runners. Feeling like my homelab is in a much better place now. What surprises me is the Act Runner is actually much faster than the Gitlab runner. Also nice to have same workflow for builds everywhere.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb it seemed to be most open and simple to run. I mostly liked ease of setup and the fact that the runners can just use Github workflows. The rest is mostly complications caused by Gitlab, such as needing two ACME certificate authorities, and runners being awfully complicated to setup.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb between Gitea and Forgejo i would pick the later one. It’s running on codeberg.org and that was quite impressive. Also prefer Forgejo because supported by a non-profit entity

@jimmyb self-hosted? If so what software are you using?

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb how was your experience getting it running? Also which WoW version are you using? Using TrinityCore myself for 3.3.5a, also happen to be the person founding MaNGOS in 2005 😅

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb funny coincidence, thanks for helping! Forums were quite full of rather unfriendly folks back then. 😓 must have been summer 2005 then. Glad to hear it did something for you

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb same here, helping people have fun was the best. These days I mostly work on TrinityCore for fun. Mainly private for wife and kids, some friends. Modified the core to support phasing through expansions

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb I might have something for you soon then. Kinda working on an integrated solution for building and playing your own custom content supporting client changes and many other things. Just started taking my changes and preparing to publish on GitHub. Will take some time since I am mostly a weekend warrior but it’s coming. Will be on https://github.com/wowemulation-dev

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb code and docs will pour in over the next days, next weekend first batch incoming. Feedback much appreciated. Going for mom and dad at home friendly for setting up and using everything.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@jimmyb it is TrinityCore with some modifications to allow multiple expansions. I would like to use the Cataclysm game client with support for phasing maps but it would mean porting maps from WotLK to Cataclysm among other issues. So going beyond WotLK is kinda in the backlog if I ever figure out how to solve it.

The key point that I think a lot of engineers still don't get is that their job is not about making widgets that get plonked on top of the world. This is about changing the shape of things inside a working system (Planet Earth) to shift how it operates. Those widgets become part of that system - it's like operating on a living human. The engineers of the future mustn't see their job as creating things external to the world.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@helenczerski every work is about people and should be for the benefit of people and planet. If not, it’s bad.
