The 1990s and 2000s were a heyday for nerds. Tech was now cool and we could unabashedly embrace our enthusiasm for math, science, etc.

We've backslid.

Today's tech founders compete to be like "Fuck math. I hunt Siberian wild boar in the nude using a knife made from only my own frozen excrement."

What happened?

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@ct_bergstrom that seems a bit too rose-colored. It's more like bullies needed that time to adapt to this new playing field and figure out how to abuse their nerdy victims because the field had changed. Though that just may be a reflection of my own experience which included a lot of physical and verbal abuse for being nerdy back then. It's just another episode of humanity failing at being better.

@StillIRise1963 we fought more than one war instead of talking it out. I think that was the point where our extinction became inevitable 😞

The main thing that makes me curious about alternate economic systems is facts like a top 5% salary in the UK being £80k/year. Statistically that makes you 'rich', but it just.... doesn't. Rich is Lamborghinis and yachts, £80k pre-tax is maybe being able to afford a house in whichever major city you have to live for work and having a rainy day fund. I hate that we all just accept that having even moderate financial stability is to have made it, when in reality homeownership and not retiring below the poverty line should be the literal bare minimum that everyone deserves.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@malwaretech Not just in the UK. Rest of EU is equally broken, nothing is sufficient at this point because there is a rich person (as in yachts, etc) sucking you dry somewhere, and pointing you at a random stranger for blame.

Just saw a really irritating anti-remote work chart crime from making the rounds on twitter, from an article claiming that "The most worrying finding in the latest survey -- especially in a workplace that is increasingly hybrid and remote -- is that employees who can do their work remotely have an eroding connection to the mission or purpose of the organization."

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@molly0xfff when a company uses the word mission they immediately discredit themselves. There is no mission. There is positive Cashflow, dividends, stock buybacks, etc. nothing else. The rest is just for this. If google could shoot cows and make more money with a killed cow than an ad displayed, they would do it. Also… millions of “missions” and broken promises to employees make anyone feel sour.

Whenever you see the words “ads”, “cryptocurrency”, “blockchain”, “web 3”, or “AI”, just replace them with “farts” and you’ll know whether you want them or not.

“Can the fediverse survive without farts?”

Yes, perfectly well.

“Will farts replace people?”

I hope not.

“The European Commission embraces farts.”

That’s unfortunate.

“This new startup wants to improve your life with farts.”

I’m good, thanks.

Have two topics regarding my hobby bothering me: my MPQ reader/writer works for version 1 of the format but it should work for all four versions. And directly coming behind is my CASC library… need to write tests but no clue how to handle binary data in tests.

The upward redistribution of wealth over the past 45 years has shifted $50 trillion from the bottom 90% to the top 1%. That’s $50 trillion that would have gone into the paychecks of working Americans.

Been running a local server for Cataclysm lately and that kinda makes me wonder if Cataclysm Classic will ever happen.

Generally I would like for Blizzard to have a generic "Classic" thing where one could go to a Classic realm, and then when creating a character pick any expansion older than the live one, and just play in that state on the character. Ideally, once you reach max level in the expansion it should then allow to move the character to the next expansion. If only...

@hpkomic@horrorhub.club avatar

I do miss playing . I was primarily a tank, and as thankless as the role was, I always enjoyed it.

Just couldn't justify the time sink, gear chase, and monthly cost. I quit just before Legion, I think. I pretty much avoid most MMOs these days.

If only there was a single-player game that gave me those tank mechanics and raid encounters.

danielsreichenbach,

@hpkomic perhaps classic or the coming hardcore realms might be a thing? At least those seem to remove the constant pressure to do more.

fell, to opensource
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

I use software, but I don't really care about freedom at all.

I don't have anything against proprietary software. I'm a game developer after all.

I just hate the feeling when someone is trying to sell me something. To manipulate me into spending more money, giving me the feeling that I'm being ripped off.

Name a fair price and I'll happily buy your app. But modern software isn't like that anymore. Modern apps are 10€ per month for an alarm clock. And that's just stupid.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@fell imho everything should be open source, and commercial software should just be open source plus a support contract. Software is easily reproduced these days, but the knowledge of the original developer is an asset I gladly pay for.

danielsreichenbach,
@danielsreichenbach@mastodon.world avatar

@fell I get that, but imho that’s not the norm. Software - be it open or closed - never is documented in a way that allows you to get into it without bumps. Reason I said support was me thinking that e.g. having a de dedicated channel for asking those initial stupid questions and pay for it seems like a solid thing to pay for. I used to have time for tinkering in my younger days but now I have so much work I would rather pay for someone to give me a head start.
