Dear L.L. Zamenhof,

"scii?" Seriously?

First it was "fartas." Then I quit studying . Then I tried it again and got as far as "shatas," and laughed my head off.

Now, "scii" (pronounced s-ts-ee-ee). I get it you're using Latin "scire," but the pronunciation is just atrocious, bro. 😢

🤦‍♂️

Edit: (continued)...

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@tennoseremel Indeed. If you can pronounce the English¹ word "tsunami" without making the "t" silent, you're close enough. I can kinda see why for many [st͡s] is significantly more challenging than just [t͡s], though.

@RL_Dane

¹well, borrowed from Japanese 津波

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@RL_Dane @tennoseremel Quite some do pronounce «scii» as «cii» or «tsii» (i.e., [t͡sii] or [tsii] instead of [st͡sii]), but that's an incorrect pronunciation, so try not to get used to it. You'll usually be understood from context, but as «ci» is also an Esperanto word (meaning «thou», i.e. (archaic) singular «you»), «cii» would actually be the infinitive of the verb related to it (probably meaning to address someone as «ci», if anything at all).

Habt ihr Größen-Wünsche?

Every time someone raises a problem in the ecosystem someone chimes in and says that should hire someone full time to fix this. I guess over the last two years I have seen job ideas for at least 20 positions.

The Haskell Foundation only has money for (about) two employees right now and needs to refinance itself by sponsorship every year.

Its like everywhere in . Companies make profit, volunteers make things happen.

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@maralorn For things people and companies want fixed but that neither volunteers nor any individual company take on (if there are any such things at all), could the foundation coordinate some crowdfunding? If pledges reach the funding target for an issue, someone will be hired to fix it; if the funding target isn't reached, interest in the fix apparently wasn't so much after all.

Then again, those willing to fix such things for pay could probably organize crowdfunding themselves.

Alright, listen up. I see a lot of discussion getting way too heated because you've got people with perfect English on one side, and people just struggling to get themselves understood in a language they don't speak well on the other, and then both sides just don't get what the other is saying and then things explode. I've seen this so, so many times. And honestly all this tells me is that it's really, really easy for English speaking people to think that since we have a lot of good English speakers on the internet, or that that is the bubble they always find themselves in, that everybody does. And this is so very much not the case and y'all should be careful. You're making enemies you don't necessarily have to make just because you don't consider that the person on the other side can't express themselves clearly and is just doing the best they can.

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@talon If only there was a language just as expressive as English, but easier & faster to learn as a foreign language, because it was designed with that goal. A language with a flow just as natural as most ethnic languages, but with much more regular & much simpler grammar & with a modular vocabulary that helps you understand even words & terms you don't yet know. A language that is (while not a perfectly level playing field) no country's & no people's property, nor that of any group of …

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@talon … countries or peoples, but belonging to all of Humanity. A language that has proven its usability not just for efficient communication and fair discourse, but also for art and culture, for fiction, poetry, song lyrics and most other genres of literature for now already over 135 years. A language that despite its unchangeable core (which prevents schisms in a globally dispersed speakership) has proven its ability to evolve and adapt to new developments, circumstances and sentiments.

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@talon A language that, despite being a planned one, is (itself, not extending to all works in it) free of "intellectual property" claims such as copyright, patents & trademarks, & thus open to be learned and used by anyone. A language with a phonetic orthography & simple, completely regular pronunciation rules. A language drawing a majority of its morphemes from other languages in widespread use, so you are likely to recognize some of them—without pulling in those other languages' complications

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@talon AFAIK, most |s aren't being actively used, many not even by their creators. Quite some aren't even intended for everyday use, but rather for fiction (to appear in fiction, not to author fiction in them), for the entertainment of creating them, or other purposes. Some aren't easy to learn, some not easy & natural to use, some lack expressive power or nuance. And not all conlangs are free of "intellectual property" claims. Only few have been used uninterrupted for over a century.

Are there any interesting or offensive security reports on cracking or ? I've always been curious what kind of challenges it would present in practice/how much difficulty the immutable store and containerization of packages would really pose, or if there are minor faults throughout the codebase they can easily be tracked down and exploit for professionals. But haven't found any good posts on the matter.

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@rml In normal operation, NixOS doesn't containerize packages. Manipulating $PATH to only have certain software available is good against accidentally using more than one should, but doesn't protect against rouge (or pwned) applications just calling stuff by its fully qualified /nix/store path, so I don't think that'd be much of an obstacle.

An approach (https://grahamc.com/blog/erase-your-darlings/) might grant some protection against intruders persisting a threat, but isn't the default in NixOS.

das_g,
@das_g@chaos.social avatar

@rml I'm by no means a security expert, but I'd guess that it's harder to persist malware while also keeping it somewhat hidden on a system that doesn't keep a lot of state at all vs. on one that preserves a lot of (unmanaged) state anyway and where no one has any overview over what state it should or shouldn't keep.

Whether that is a worthwhile investment of time and thought compared to other measures, I don't know.
