It is obviously wonderful that #Trump was finally found guilty... But the US has a far bigger problem than him. He's just a symptom of a wider issue.

The problem is that fully one half of their voting population lives in a fabricated alternate reality where any attempt to move back to normality is fed back in to reinforce its persecution narrative.

How do you resolve a situation like that, where every normalising step intensifies the problem? How do you recover?

Son of Godzilla (1967): A group of isolated male scientists discover an inexplicable creature they can barely comprehend, and then she helps them escape Godzilla and some giant insects.

After about a solid two weeks of chipping away at it, I finally finished the quest line in . Can't decide whether it was genius or folly...

It was definitely unusual to have a quest line that was so lengthy and immersive, and some parts of it were wonderful.

But the confusing names, the endless dialogue and the occasional feeling of being completely lost sometimes annoyed...

This year was an odd one...

On one hand, lots of good stuff happened. @teahands and I got wed and had a lovely, low-key day that was perfectly "us". We went to see Eurovision. We had our first cruise. The Miami Dolphins have been doing suspiciously well...

On the flip side, health issues were a stress, and work was... well, let's not mention work. Combined with the wider world being a nonstop fuck-a-palooza...

So I wanted to send it off by picking out some of the cool stuff I've enjoyed...

Best new obsession of the year was... Retro Handhelds!

This one is a surprise. Ask me last year and I would have said these devices were cheap, Chinese tat... and they are, in some respects.

But they seem to have crossed a line where, despite being tat, they're also endlessly compelling.

Cheap enough to justify owning a few, with endless collectable variations, they've become quite a rabbit hole for me.

Of course, I spend more time configuring and setting up than actually playing, but hey...

@davetansley@mastodon.world avatar

It's clear to me now that owning just a single is not realistic. It's more sensible to own ALL of them.

But how do you seamlessly move between them, keeping your saves and states?

Enter "Syncthing": https://syncthing.net/

Syncthing is available just about everywhere and keeps folders in sync between devices. I've just spent a few days getting this configured on my devices and it works (mostly) great!

Read on for some tips...

By me: The Game Boy at 35 – and six of the best Game Boy games // The Game Boy’s green screen might not have made rivals green with envy, but, boy, did its games shine • https://www.stuff.tv/features/the-game-boy-at-35-and-six-of-the-best-game-boy-games/

@craiggrannell I remember taking the bus to the local game store as a 15 year old in 1990, and swapping one hundred hard earned pounds for a Gameboy and a Japanese import of Nemesis (Gradius)... Loved it!

My version of your list would include: Batman and Gargoyle's Quest.

New trend in my inbox: Getting spammed with offers for doing sponsored videos about robotic vacuum cleaners. Probably because I use a (regular old school) vacuum cleaner in some of my videos to dust off old computer parts. Sheesh.

This is a my comic book collection from the 90s and 00s (mostly 90s). I've lugged it around from city to city, mostly looking wistfully at it and imagining that one day I'll have the time to dive into it and see what a much younger version of me was picking up every Wednesday...

Well, today is the day. I've got a collection scanning app at the ready... let's see how much all those holofoil limited edition are worth!

Apparently I was really into "Death's Head" comics back in the 90s. It was a weird Marvel UK title that I don't see mentioned a lot these days.

One of the issues features a guest appearance by... Dr. Who.

What is your go-to test game?

You've set up a new emulator or piece of retro hardware and you need to test out the frame rates or the input lag or just that it works... what is the first game you load?

For me, it's always Alien Crush on the . No idea why... I guess I just know how it should look and feel. Plus, it's an awesome game!

The horrible truth is that the image we have of any given decade's design aesthetic is actually false—the truth is actually the aesthetic of the previous decade, with grime and tobacco stains on top.

davetansley,
@davetansley@mastodon.world avatar

@cstross Maybe for you, but I'm pretty sure I haven't been influenced overly by the media I consume. My childhood in the 80s was exactly as rad as I remember it.

Until that time we had to move in with Gramps and my brother started acting weird about bright lights and garlic and I hooked up with some comic book nerds and we rid the town of vampires.

davetansley,
@davetansley@mastodon.world avatar

@cstross But it was a rad kind of beige, right? The kind of beige that would roll up the sleeves of its sports jacket and peer at you slyly over the top of its sunglasses?

At some point, I kind of fell out of love with physical media. Whether it was the existence of platforms like , the hassle of keeping original hardware working and accessible, or just the amount of space that old carts and boxes take up...

Regardless, it's time to box 'em up for a while.

I'm not going as far as to sell them all (been there, done that). But it'll be good get them out of the way and stop them fading away in the sun.

Raspberry Pi is planning a London IPO, but its CEO expects “no change” in focus

— Yeah, right.

I am looking forward to my Raspberry Pi 7 which will arrive with Windows 11 pre-installed, cost a mere £25, and use the bottom 25% of the desktop for streaming ads (while snooping on my every keystroke). Because this is how enshittification proceeds …
