Every time I get asked to help someone “fix their slow computer” I’m amazed at the variety of shit people install and forget about. But there’s one constant: f*cking #adobe#CreativeCloud sitting there chewing up RAM and disk. Typically installed (and still being paid for!) because the needed to fill out one PDF form once.
@EverydayMoggie I suspect it’s what a non-technical person is capable of in terms of computer “hygiene”. The last two cases happen to be 2017 iMacs with 8GB of RAM. The “slowness” was due to memory pressure from so many extra, generally unused or unknown (to the user) things needless running.
The good news is that some cleanup and less than $50 of more RAM can keeps these machines useful for another couple of years.
Matt Levine’s “Money Stuff” newsletter is so good. I’m supremely unqualified to evaluate the content from a professional perspective, but it’s an enjoyable read, and maybe I’m learning something (?)
“[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances. … They think they know everything, and are always quite sure about it.”
@Ricardus I do not. This was the built in Web view inside of of the "Toot!" iOS app, but running on my home network where I block lots of ad domains at the DNS level.
I like & get value from Goodreads, and have many connections there that I value. I'm also a fan of the #SocialWeb / #fediverse and believe in open protocols and data portability. I've optimistically setup a #BookWyrm account here: https://sfba.club/user/dcreemer . Reading is visible to followers only for now.
Is there any general advice on cross-posting from (e.g.) #PixelFed or #BookWyrm to #mastodon ? I know that if folks are interested specifically in my photos they could follow my pixelfed account, but I do see a lot of pictures posted here (and I like to see pictures here). #fediverse#question
@dcreemer I follow my PixelFed account on Mastodon, so I post to PixelFed, view the post via Mastodon, click the ellipsis (I use the Toot client), click Copy toot, and select ‘as a link’. Then I create a new toot in my Mastodon account and copy the link and post. It may seem like a lot of steps, but it goes quickly. The post preview works, so they see a small version of the image as part of the link to my PixelFed.
Just got the year end email from @seb and the SFBA instance team. What a great group, well run instance, and exemplary community in the #mastodon world.
Best part was the humor in the email footer: 😂
