It is heartening that the editor of the New York Times is being widely condemned for his indifference to saving democracy. Dan Froomkin's piece today has a sampling of the loathing Joe Kahn unleashed. https://presswatchers.org/2024/05/new-york-times-editor-joe-kahn-says-defending-democracy-is-a-partisan-act-and-he-wont-do-it/

This is not the proclamation of an expert. This is the confession of a fool.

I should explain.

I wrote the words you’ll find between these covers after August 2017, which was a key date in my rapidly dawning awareness of the true nature of my country.

Linux containers in FreeBSD can start through the old good - which does not support complex features like cgroups or namespaces, which means I probably can't run a container inside a container. Yet.

But this Linux layer is actively supported in FreeBSD for almost 20 years and is rock-solid! It started in 2006 at Google, based on Linux kernel 2.6 and today it shows up as 5.15-compatible!

This paper is trash. We do this every few years.

The conclusion is correct (graduate degree holding white men believe the most 'taboo' conspiracy theories), but the reasons it suggests why, are sociology-babble garbage. The real reason is:

  • Racism is a lie. To believe in racism, you must believe a set of easily debunkable lies.
  • Richer, whiter, maler, more educated populations are not less racist, despite attempts to twist stats to say this. They're more racist.

UT Austin, my employer, beats and jails students engaged in peaceful protest, then manufactures propaganda that deeply misrepresents what the students were doing and had planned to do.

How am I supposed to work at an institution willing to hurt any students I recruit to come here? This is untenable.

Empathy is innate. It is how we learn things from our first breaths. It has to be DEconditioned and one function of right-wing political thought for 50 years in this fucking country - from Limbaugh to Fox News to splintered micromedia like Rogan and Tate - has been to decondition empathy in as many people as possible by selling them tribalism and faux-aggrievement at people daring to step outside of the hierarchal "natural order." This is INTRINSIC to the ideology and why it became an actual fascist movement.

I've got a new, really exciting job position I'm #hiring for — WebKit Security Response Manager!

That's right, a manager position for our new Security Response team at Apple's San Diego office. This is as cool as it gets if you are into leadership and management in software security.

Apply here and please spread the word: https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/details/200548807/webkit-security-response-manager

Oh, one more thing. We are still hiring a senior Security Engineer for that very same team: https://jobs.apple.com/en-us/details/200517579/webkit-engine-security-engineer

"The thing is: none of this is gone. Nothing about the web has changed that prevents us from going back. If anything, it's become a lot easier. We can return. Better, yet: we can restore the things we loved about the old web while incorporating the wonderful things that have emerged since"

"the skills and resources required to establish one's own sovereign plot become more accessible by the day."

Amen.

It must be wild to be a student right now.

School shootings? You’re on your own. Thoughts and prayers.

Peaceful protest? That’s going too far. Send in the riot gear.

That America feels empowered to intervene in one but not the other tells you everything you need to know.

This is the most intensely clear and scary look at a Trump presidency I’ve ever read. And it’s not guessing what it could be, these are his words and intentions. The article references the Time cover story and goes on to explain other examples of presidential overreach, which in light of Trumps statements, seem like child’s play. Even if you like Trump what she summarizes about the Time story should worry you deeply. I’m going to go read that now. And I highly recommend this newsletter, she writes amazing stories on our democracy. https://open.substack.com/pub/heathercoxrichardson/p/april-30-2024?r=159ll&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email

Isn't it interesting that every killing by every cop is just a single bad apple that should never be thought to spoil the bunch, while every protest by and on behalf of marginalized people must be flawlessly perfect, or all participants deserve the brutality the police exist to deliver to them?
