There'a a conference I considered attending last year, but there was no mention at all on the website about covid mitigation strategies. I couldn't even see a way to request a single room. I also could find no way to contact the organiser to ask questions.
I'm at elevated risk from covid19, even removing my mask to eat with others feels risky.
Nope. Sad, but nope.
"significant numbers of researchers at A.I. conferences were caught handing their peer review of others’ work over to A.I. — or … writing them with lots of A.I. assistance. And the closer to the deadline the submitted reviews were received, the more A.I. usage was found in them.
If … you think that maybe it shouldn’t be A.I.s reviewing science … those feelings highlight the paradox at the core of this technology: It’s unclear what the ethical line is." https://mstdn.science/@bkahn/112192024999364589 #AI#LLM
… "Einstein supposedly said: 'If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be very intelligent, read them more fairy tales.' But what happens when a toddler is consuming mostly A.I.-generated dream-slop? We [are] in the midst of a vast developmental experiment.
There’s so much synthetic garbage on the internet now that A.I. … researchers are themselves worried, not about the health of the culture, but about what’s going to happen with their models."
I'm just finishing a 2nd reading of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (by N. K. Jemison) and it's quite amazing. Greek pantheon meets modern fantasy fiction.
It was TFG's 'muslim ban' and his inhumanity to asylum seekers and refugees that made me, for a first time, poltically active. In fact, it revealed to me a deep value that I hadn't previously articulated: "stand up for the vulnerable".
But, until watching this, I didn't realise why.
That's when I realised that M∆G∆ was not an American problem, but aworldproblem.
😭
\o/ Marie Kondo "is open with followers… I realised always maintaining the perfect state of tidiness was not my goal, but spending time with my kids is. That’s what really sparks joy. …It’s just that the idea may no longer always be attainable”.
“In the past, I didn’t have the idea of a temporary location for items.”
@deborahh The most important activism is to vote! (And of course we have to do much more to protect democracy).
The problem is not Meloni against Le Pen, the problem is that all extremists together will block democratic decisions in the parliament or even join to destroy the EU.
If then Trump would win - who networks with the European extremists - the world will get very dark and dangerous. So, friends in the USA, let's fight for democracy together! ✊
"In an attempt to reduce the population of the former Danish colony, at least 4,500 women and girls are believed to have undergone the medical procedure, being forcibly fitted with the contraceptive coil, usually without their consent or knowledge, at the hands of Danish doctors, from 1966-1970 alone.
… now generations of Inuit women are left traumatised and suffering reproductive complications, including infertility, as a result of the Danish state’s policy." https://c.im/@RadicalAnthro/112179082138690655
Apple screen reader (built into the OS) ignored all formatting, so the strikeout word ("me") gets read without change. Otherwise it sounded fine. It also said the tagged word without formatting. So the message is conveyed, but formatting is lost.
""Other countries have social safety nets. The U.S. has women."
😖
"Mothers are blaming themselves for their 'failures' in this pandemic — for failing to be the perfect worker who doesn’t let her kids distract her … for failing to be the perfect mother who sacrifices work to meet her kids’ needs, for failing to be the perfect wife who never gets angry & always defers to her spouse.
As a sociologist, it’s easy to see how that blame is deeply misplaced…"
