There are some who want to allow to join the Fediverse, on the basis that we'll see how they behave, and then we can always block them if they break our rules.

That makes as much sense to me as watching someone commit a murder outside your house, and then letting them into your home, still carrying the murder weapon, to see how they behave. If they hurt us, we can always close the door later.

They've already broken our rules. Why wait until they hurt us again?

Facebook is a corporation founded on abuse of data. It's in the company DNA. They've subverted democracy and abused people's human rights. Even if Zuck had an epiphany tomorrow and decided to no longer be a creep, do you think Facebook can change? Do you think the shareholders, the customers, the government agencies that rely on it being as it is would allow that?

    Google and Microsoft are breaking email for their own selfish reasons - to force everyone to use their services if they hope to have email delivered to anyone using those dominant platforms. http://www.igregious.com/2023/03/gmail-is-breaking-email.html Seems undeniable that they are actively trying to kill independent email providers in order to surveil all people who use email (and profit from selling the results to other capitalist dregs).

    dentangle,
    @dentangle@chaos.social avatar

    @dogriley @lightweight Sadly SPF, DKIM etc do almost nothing to stop spam. Most of the spam that isn't blocked by simple RFC checks comes from places like Google that have valid SPF, DMARC + DKIM etc. If gmail, me, hotmail etc. hadn't been breaking RFCs for years the RFC checks would deal with almost all of the spammers out there.

    A friend of mine in Finland wrote and produced this opera about Finnish women's activist Minna Canth[1] and I am just in awe. To actually get that onto the stage, with an unexpected Pandemic cancelling the planned opening night, and then having to be reschedule. Just wow.

    "Why? WHY?!!! Oh, that's why..."

    Headdesking when the big change you are sure will improve things actually makes it slower, followed by huge dollops of dopamine when a small tweak yields a huge speedup.

    Measure. Profile. Find bottlenecks. Waggle your fingers. Waggle your eyebrows. Waggle your beard (sold separately). It's a kind of magic.

    @downey There's some astonishing maths going on.

    Apple is, to my astonishment, the "world's biggest company by market capitalization".

    It hit $1 trillion for the first time in 2018.

    Then $2 trillion in 2020.

    Then it became the first company valued at $3 trillion in 2023.

    That rate of rise is insane.

    There are only 9 companies in the world > $1 trillion. Tesla is on that list. Not Volkswagen.

    This is imaginary wealth. What happens when we stop believing this crap?

    (Looking in my timelines, every other day, and with all due respect and enthusiasm for these things: It always and again feels odd to see FLOSS software solutions, pointing to some codeberg or github project page, advertised as "your ultimate alternative to <insert-your-favourite-walled-garden-cloud-service-here>" and then leaving you with a bunch of files to download and tinker with. I mean... is it just me to feel this is totally comparing apples to oranges?)

    dentangle,
    @dentangle@chaos.social avatar

    @z428 I'd say it's more like comparing a McDonalds hamburger to a basket full of fresh ingredients.

    It's an alternative. It's better. Better takes work.

    dentangle,
    @dentangle@chaos.social avatar

    @z428 It's an alternative, not an equivalent.

    A lot of folks coming from Twitter complain about Masto because it isn't the same. They wanted an equivalent, not an alternative.

    Some folks have neither the time, the skills nor desire to seek alternatives. They like Facebook, and don't see the problems with it.

    FOSS can provide alternatives, but, no, a github repo is not an equivalent to a service provided by a multi-billion dollar company, and financed by exploiting your data.

    @machias It feels good! Deleted my rarely used FB account last year. Working on dumping Google (harder, as there's no replacement for YouTube content. I stopped using their search years ago).

    I never had a Reddit account. Did I miss anything? A few times search results took me there, but I don't think I ever found anything useful and the interface was awful. It can join the ranks of MySpace, Instagram and TikTok as sites I never used.

    dentangle,
    @dentangle@chaos.social avatar

    @machias Aye - I miss Usenet.

    Twitter drove me away well before Musk bought it. Too nasty, and I had no control over what was in my timeline. I'd miss things from people I'd followed only to be shown garbage from people I didn't. It seemed to be more of a write-only medium. Look at me! I did a thing! I rarely had conversations on there.

    Reddit never grabbed me. I never really looked at it properly, so probably my fault. The few times I ended up following a link there I found it hard to read.

    I’ve read comments from a few folks that were trying to figure out why Trump would show off classified documents to uncleared visitors to Mar-a-lago. It’s a total flex/boast opportunity for him. A couple of years ago I saw an interview with someone (can’t remember who) well versed in upper crust society. She visited Trump’s penthouse. As he showed off the art he specified how much he paid for each piece. No one had ever done that for her and she said that was weird. Flexing docs is on brand

    @machias It's a common pattern with psychopaths and narcissists I've encountered. The name dropping and sharing of confidential information is one of the first things to ring alarms bells. Why does this apparently confident and charming person feel the need to share this obviously in-confidence information about [company/person] with me?

    As I neither work for an academic institution nor a large corporate, getting access to standards documentation and research papers is a major pain. So much knowledge is paywalled, and I often don't know before hunting down and reading it whether it will be of any use to me.
