I have to say I'm impressed with social.coop: both with how engaged the community is with thorny policy questions and with the dedication our mods have to following our governance policies.

Right now there's a big debate on how best to handle Threads when it inevitably federates, and no clear consensus within the community on what to do.

It SEEMS like there is an emerging consensus on limiting threads. But I'm very curious to see the final outcome.

This morning, my seven-year-old asked me if climate change was causing the fires in Canada. (I made him put on a mask because of the haze.)

I told him how warmer weather has been drying out the forests and making them more vulnerable to fire.

He didn't ask any more, just went inside to play.

I am so deeply, deeply angry.

• It is such a pleasure to play a Shepard-style character. Confidently confident is a nice change of pace.

One challenge I am learning about for local activism is finance.

We have ideas for what we want to accomplish, and many of them are free or member financed.

We have one idea for a project that would be a community composting fund. People all buy into a single fund which will negotiate a rate with a local b-corp composting service.

It'd be handy to have a centralized fund for this effort. How do we manage that? Who owns it? Who pays taxes? What rules govern it?

I still need to read more, but my first reaction to the rumors of #Meta joining the fediverse is curiosity.

Meta's business model is to collect tons of user data and sell ads.

It's conceivable that they would gather user data through the fediverse, but I assume complicated legally and technically.

The ads, though. How on earth could they sell ads to the users? Unless the ads were only distributed locally? In which case, the risk to fediverse users is small?

I'm probably missing something.
