RIGHT NOW: We've parked a billboard truck outside the House E&C Committee hearing displaying comments from young people and parents who oppose dangerous censorship bills like and want lawmakers to actually address the harms of Big Tech. https://www.fightforthefuture.org/news/2024-05-22-listen-to-kids-billboard-outside-house-hearing-raises-up-voices-of-lgbtq-youth-who-oppose-kosa/

Alright, it's official. The dangerous & misguided Kids Online Safety Act () will go to a "mark up" vote in the House Energy & Commerce Committee this morning, Thursday, May 23. THIS IS JUST A SUBCOMMITTEE VOTE. WE CAN STILL STOP OR FIX THIS BILL! https://www.stopkosa.com

Some important things: First,
has not been fixed. There have been several rounds of changes to the bill, some of which have convinced large DC-based NGOs to drop their opposition, but there is still a large coalition of LGBTQ, human rights, racial justice groups opposed.

evangreer,
@evangreer@mastodon.online avatar

Last week, a coalition of LGBTQ, reproductive rights, and racial justice groups sent a letter reiterating how the CURRENT VERSION of
is a threat to marginalized communities, and urging lawmakers to table the bill or amend it to address concerns https://www.fightforthefuture.org/news/2024-05-20-new-letter-lgbtq-and-reproductive-rights-groups-tell-congress-to-take-their-concerns-about-kosa-seriously-trans-youth-and-abortion-seekers-are-at-risk/

The latest version of
would still allow, for example, a future Trump administration, to go after platforms simply for showing certain types of content to younger users. This will lead to another SESTA/FOSTA , where platforms aggressively filter content to cover their butts.

evangreer,
@evangreer@mastodon.online avatar

We've proposed changes to
that would fix this by ensuring it only applies to "content neutral" design features like autoplay and infinite scroll. The ACLU have proposed changes. Senator Wyden has offered amendments to address concerns. They haven't made them yet.

Hundreds of parents of trans kids have also urged lawmakers to consider alternatives to and explained why it would make their kids less safe, rather than more safe, by cutting them off from lifesaving online resources and community: www.transparentsletter.com

There's some good news about the hearing tomorrow. The committee is also marking up . We think this bill needs to be strengthened, and we're concerned about pre-empting state laws and FTC rulemaking, but we generally think a privacy bill is way better idea than .

evangreer,
@evangreer@mastodon.online avatar

There were some worries that would be attached to . So far it seems like that isn't happening. So there is a clear path for lawmakers to improve and pass a strong privacy bill rather than advancing a dangerous and controversial censorship bill.

US Congress is attempting to slip the Kids Online Safety Act into the must-pass FAA reauthorization package. The bill claims to make kids safer, but it’s really a dangerous censorship bill that will give the US government unprecedented control over the Internet.

US Americans: call your representatives NOW to oppose KOSA. This website gives you the phone numbers and script:

The dangerous Kids Online Safety Act now has a House version, and some lawmakers are seeking to attach the bill to must-pass legislation. Legislation of this magnitude deserves to pass—or fail—on its own merits. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/05/us-version-kosa-still-censorship-bill

It's wild that all the nonprofits are suddenly on board with . Big mistake they will come to regret. Why do we keep handing more power to our government even as fascists attempt to take over?

So the bill isn't dead yet.

If in USA, please go demand of your reps that it die. It's a censorship act. It has nothing to do with kid's safety. Thanks.

Hey btw everyone should be panicking about KOSA. This bill would require everyone to upload your government ID in order to use most sites on the internet.

The Kids Online Safety Act still gives federal and state officials the power to target lawful speech online, and it will still harm a wide range of children who rely on the internet to access information and find their communities. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2024/02/dont-fall-latest-changes-dangerous-kids-online-safety-act
