Haha, rad! A woman in Guyana used @terraso's story maps feature to document a motorcycle trip across the landscape.

I love this. Often in the nonprofit sector we (I) get really clinical describing my community's environment. Telling an actual narrative (road trip!) is a great way to communicate the wonderful things about a place and its people.

Movie idea:

The summer Olympic Village is the epicenter of a zombie apocalypse. People are falling left and right but the combat sport athletes do fantastic. Archery, rifles, even the javelin and hammer toss do great.

They need to hold out for the night and deliver the antidote to a helicopter. People start falling down, tired and overwhelmed by waves of the dead. The day is saved by the rhythmic gymnast who everyone mocked, because their pattern based movements hypnotize the zombies.

Hey fellow Solarpunks, the mainstream is onto us:
https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/18/24104890/figma-ceo-dylan-field-cyberpunk-solarpunk-trends-sxsw-2024

Don't lose your bearings, don't get distracted, don't fall for the trinkets. "Solarpunk capitalism" is still capitalism.

Remember, it's more about the "punk" than the "Solar". Movement, not just aesthetic. Community as the protagonist.

Media attention comes and goes, it's up to us what remains. And we're all in this together.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

@rysiek Interesting. I wonder what specific aspects of design he's thinking about. Is it more... color? More organic elements? Fewer hard lines?

(Obviously Field is thinking about aesthetics here and not the underlying message of solarpunk, or cyberpunk, for that matter. )

I work at an open source green software company. We use Figma and I'm genuinely curious what design aspects he thinks people like us should be pursuing.

I found a Bluray player at for $10. Bought some used Miyazaki movies for a few dollars more.

Today it feels (very slightly) subsersive to have a movie in a format that doesn't require an Internet connection, can't be injected with ads, and won't get taken away when the company who sold it gets tired of maintaining the service.

@annaleen Thanks for sharing! I bought another copy.

I really appreciate how you make the ebook DRM free! I use an open-source ereader that only works with open file formats, and its SO helpful.

Never written in or called your rep in government before? Here's a template for what to say:

Subject line: [The specific ask you have.]

Dear [name],

[Salutation, depending on the tone you want.] I am a constituent and a voter. I am writing today to ask that you [take a specific action, eg, support X bill, speak out against Y issue.]

[2-3 sentences why this matters, and what the outcome will be if they do the thing you asked for.]

Sincerely,

[Your name]

That's it!

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

You put your specific ask early, at the top, because that helps them A) know immediately what you're asking for and B) categorize your message.

B is key. An individual voice matters, but looking at a dataset that says "1000 of your constituents wrote in favor of this" helps your rep clearly get a signal from the populace.

I fell off the wagon... or am I back on my BS?

Either way, I'm making another board.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Boards and margins finished. Having a table saw makes for better joints.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Margins finished (again) for my chess board. I made them in poplar because I think the carving work I want to do will be easier in soft wood.

Then, I cut the 2" sides of the box into 1" slices. 🫣 Added bevels.

I am stretching my knowledge here, for sure.

For a hot minute I thought I'd decorate the margins with an illustrative scene with wire inlay! Big ambitions to do a series of illustrations with copper inlay.

I've landed on much a simpler geometric pattern. More doable.

a simple set of overlapping squares and leaves in copper inlay

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

There we go.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Drew the inlay pattern on the opposide side of the board (this time using the speed square... yay for having those right angles handy).

You know, woodworking has made me appreciate the real-world implications of my high school class.

There's something to be said for proofs - if you have a shape, and you know the dimensions of some of those shapes, you can also know the angles of the shape, and the dimensions of other sides.

A board with the inlay patterns visible on both sides.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

I've come to realize the consequences of a decision I made to make the storage space of the board ~1.5" tall (half the dimensions of my first board)!

ALL the pieces (which will be at max 1" wide) must fit on a single side of the box.

I have a plan. It may or may not involve magnets.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Omg. On the last element of my wire inlay project I figured out how to do inlay correctly. Look at the difference!

Moving forward (if I do more inlay) I'm going to save so much glue, prevent so much damage to the wood!

A wire inlay leaf. Rough lines, noticeable damage to wood, lots of dried glue.

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

@GustavinoBevilacqua lessons learned:

  1. Hammer the wire until it is as thin as possible

  2. Make the cuts deep and narrow

I was not hammering enough and the wire was somewhat rounded. Because of this I was making wide cuts to fit the inlay, and it bounced around. Because of this I had to use a lot of glue. Lots of hammering. The whole thing was, to say the least, messy.

With thin wire, the sides of the narrow cut grip the wire. It just requires a little glue to keep together!

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

🥰

derek,
@derek@social.coop avatar

Cue the sad trumpets. Major bummer.

I honestly have no idea why this is happening. Did I over sand the wood close up all the pores?
