@desiree could I enlist you to do some tf/hypnosis smut detective work for me? There are two stories (well, one two-part story and one comic) I've been looking for again for the longest time and I canNOT find them D:

@pixel Fire away! Can't promise anything, but I have a good memory for this sort of thing, if I've crossed paths with it before.

@pixel First one potentially sounds like "Chemistry Class" by Marmalade Mum... I'll look into this more when I have the time. Tonight was busy.

@pixel Both good details; I'll see what I can turn up when I have time.

(Tried the Wayback Machine for your story, by the by? They typically do a good job archiving Doc's Lab snapshots, so the story could be recoverable that way.)

The other day, I saw a post from someone talking about loneliness and a lack of people to do things with. This post was made by someone who is "internet popular" and runs a Discord server with a whole bunch of people. At first, I was kind of insulted; this person is taking their following for granted and just isn't taking initiative. But as I thought about it, I feel like the disconnect is maybe in language.

Every word has two definitions: the denotative (what it says in dictionaries) and the connotative (our personal understanding of the word, informed by our knowledge, feelings, and experiences). When popular or semi-popular people talk about being lonely, I think what they mean is the lack of close interpersonal connections, not denotative loneliness.

Through that lens, I find it much more relatable; I know intimately the discomfort of being in a place and surrounded by people and feeling utterly alone.

I just don't understand why this person built a space to have that feeling.

I want to be a cute anime girl - Page 322 : Fun

Decided to post cute anime girl here if I'm going to be more active here.

Oddly enough, when i tried to post this page the first few times, it was completely blacked out until i tried to edit it and then clicked the preview thing. Weird.

@scout drew a really cute picture of what I think Maffi would look like as a familiar.

She's like a tiny, flying version of Care Bear Cousin Maffi, and she'd do similar magic to the bigger version, making art that becomes real like Paint Roller from Kirby, but from a cute magical girl companion kind of angle.

Q: "Why is spelling/grammar important if the reader can understand what I'm anyway?"

A: There are two pretty good reasons. The first is simple appeal to authority: readers associate sloppy spelling with sloppy thinking. This is kind of shitty of us as people, but it tends to hold true, especially in areas that want the reader to trust the author (newspapers, long fiction that asks the reader to commit a lot of time up front, etc.).

More importantly, poor spelling and grammar detracts from the reader's attention and ability to focus. Consider: "Th ttl cms t svn dllrs." Most readers can parse this sentence as "The total comes to seven dollars." No real meaning is ultimately lost, but it takes much more attention (or "cognitive load," to use the parlance) to get to the same point of understanding. The brain is subconsciously working out the puzzle of understanding more than focusing on the meaning; multiply that effect out to ten or 200 or 4000 pages, and understanding breaks.

desiree,
@desiree@chitter.xyz avatar

@gray17 Very true! I considered bringing that up as well, but I hit the character limit and was close to done with my break anyway. :mouse_blob_mlem:

@TerryHancock I hadn't really considered the angle of including slang/jargon/etc. in my post, but that's a very good point, though it would also depend on the intended audience, I'd think? For essays or other forms of information-first writing, accessibility should be paramount, including linguistic accessibility. When you get into things like fiction, though, I feel like that gets more wobbly? If a narrative wants to be set in a particular time and place, omitting those touchstones would be an active detriment to the whole thing.

There's nuance here that's fun to pick at the edges of.

Had an early birthday celebration with family and it went surprisingly well, probably because there were actually things to do this time. We played Mario Party (but didn't finish), Mario Kart, took a walk, and played Connect 4 Spin. I had never tried Connect 4 Spin before but it seems like my sort of thing, with being easy to explain and quick to play but quirky in a neat way.

Think I need to do a more thorough since my original post was a bit memey.

So I'm Desiree, local nerdy-type dormouse. My hobbies include board games, video games, tabletop roleplaying games, and roleplaying in general. (I'm also a bookworm, but that didn't fit the last sentence's theme.) Obviously a furry, and a particular enjoyer of content, though I'm going to refrain from overposting in that vein (maybe 2-3 times a week, reserved for ).

I'm a pretty shy person trying to use this space to come out of my shell and be more authentic. I obsess a lot over what other people think, so I'm trying to move past that and just talk and be myself. I'm pretty shy, but I enjoy meeting chill folks, so please say hi! :mouse_blob_peek:

I'm a big proponent of emojis/emoticons. Language evolves with need, after all, and I don't think anyone doubts the need to shorthand communicate tone when something is ambiguous, or simply the convenience of swiftly communicating emotion ( :blobheart: for example).

And yet, I would be weirded out if I saw the liberal use of emojis in a book. Why is that? My best guess is a certain degree of elitism in the realm of capital-A-Art. After all, would "A Modest Proposal" still be widely regarded satire if it ended with a " :P " at the end, just to make sure people got the joke? Even so, that is elitism and pretension... but is it warranted in some circumstances? Intentional inaccessibility is often a feature of media that stands the test of time (this applies as much to the works of James Joyce as it does to Dark Souls).

I... cannot think of a good counterpoint, and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth. :blobfoxthink:

desiree,
@desiree@chitter.xyz avatar

@gray17 I mean, specifically in the area of graphic novels and comics, the character's face is already present; the "emoji" is always present, in a sense. The emotional weight is mostly carried by the image.

If anything, it only further reinforces the argument that graphic reinforcement would benefit the clarity of the writing?

desiree,
@desiree@chitter.xyz avatar

@gray17 I could absolutely see adapting it to a more visual medium by stylizing the emojis as the characters speaking. In that vein, it could very easily come across as charming, depending on execution. But... speculation. 🤷‍♀️
