@hachyderm heya, running into the issue that GIF uploads aren’t processed a lot in the last few days, just a heads-up; I usually need to retry 3 or 4 times before it goes through. assume stuck worker or other queueing issue.

dma,
@dma@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs @hachyderm thanks for the head's up. i'm not seeing any queueing issues, but it could be something deeper in the stack. do you get a specific error or it just doesn't show up after you post?

The week after Thanksgiving will always be deeply bittersweet to me now.

This month, and next week in particular, mark the anniversary of the Hachyderm incident. @nova, @Taniwha, @dma, @malte, @quintessence, and I worked around the clock for over a week to migrate Hachyderm from Nóva's basement into Europe

I am forever indebted to that incident for launching my public speaking career, and to this team for becoming my beloved friends

And to Nóva, for chasing the dopamine, for tying us together

@hazelweakly @nova @Taniwha @malte @quintessence "espresso shot" is perfect. intense but not overwhelming.

Writing this Garden Gnome quest is a lot harder than I thought. There is a subtext to the quest that I'm having a hard time capturing. I think I need to leave the temp dialog in and return to it later.

P.S. Who am I kidding, the temp dialog is totally going to ship in the game.

This startup claimed it would take your 2D sketches and turn them into 3D models using AI "magic." It turns out that the "magic" is poorly-paid workers in the developing world.

Observation:

2021: The big deal in tech investing is MLMs (cryptocurrency)

2023: The big deal in tech investing is LLMs ("AI")

From this we can conclude the big deal in 2025 will be MLLs. So if you want to get ahead of the curve, all you have to do is figure out what an "MLL" is and have an investor-ready example of one by 2025, and you'll be golden

@mcc or KLMs. the return of the Ancients of Mumu is nigh!

a great piece by Joseph Gordon-Levitt on how we might start thinking about IP and residuals in the world of AI-generated content.

I think the hard bit is possibly not the tracking of training data through the generative process (hand-waving some deep technical problems) as much as it is the funnel of attribution and payment. tracking this, maintaining it, is a whole other scale of organisational complexity.

If the US government really had alien bodies, then the US president would know about it.

If the US president knew about it, then Trump would know about it.

If Trump knew about it, he would have told everyone, bragged about it, kept boxes of documents about it at Mar-A-Lago, etc. There would be a ketchup stained original photograph of an alien autopsy on the floor of his bathroom.

Since we haven't heard him brag about having seen a photo of an alien, we know that he hasn't seen one.

creating a programming language brings into clarity all those seemingly odd and arbitrary constraints other languages have.

like how to define functions in your assembly language but not have the execution engine (or VM) pile through them as if they were part of the main flow.

thus the "globals are special and here's the well known entry point" rule is born.

the power of in action.. an upgrade from nom 4 to nom 7 (yeah, I know) brought with it some breaking changes. like fundamental changes to the API and integration surface.

I thought I was looking at a full rewrite for my pet language (compiler, assembler, VM, repl) but it took all of a couple of hours, with the support of the robust testing, logging, and borrow checker frameworks.

in any other language this would have been a burn-it-down moment I think.

Is there a word for that?

@fediversenews

So, I think I've dug as deeply into the drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.

  • Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.

Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.

If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.

@maegul this is an incredibly thoughtful and well constructed thread. thank you so much for digging in to the issues. obviously, as someone who was "a bit salty" on the discord, i have growing to do too, but i do agree with pretty much everything in your assessment.

dma,

@maegul i also got a new line in my bio out of it, so i have that going for me.

thanks for the kind words.
