Milt Jackson - Jazz ‘n’ Samba

Starting this LP and asking…”what’s all this about Samba, then, Milt?” is forgivable…because all of side 1 is the “Jazz”. The “Samba” kicks in with side 2 and you can’t blame Bags for wanting to cash in a little.

The liner notes are amusing: “…spoke of (samba) as ephemeral and predicted that overproduction would run it into the ground.”

RvG definitely turned the dials up to 11 when recording this one…maybe 12.

There’s something bizarrely amusing about the iPad keyboard weighing much more than the iPad itself.

Yes - 90125 (Atlantic 75 Series)

Yes imploded/exploded quite a few times over the years, and when it broke into XYZ/Asia and this Trevor Horn-led version, 90125 came out with a new, very 80s-commercial sound.

You've definitely heard "Owner of a Lonely Heart”, which was mostly a Horn composition for a solo album. Kind of last-minute add-on Jon Anderson gave it (and the album) a more "Yes" feel.

New Atlantic 75 version sounds great.

Charly Bliss - Guppy

Solidly in the power-pop with grungy guitars zone.

Lead singer Eva Hendricks has a very distinctive, did-I-accidentally-play-this-at-45RPM voice that suits the songs, but can take a bit of getting used to.

But once you do, lots of fun to be had.

When I think "Bernard Hill”, I immediately think of his great performance as Madgett in Peter Greenaway's rather delightful Drowning by Numbers.

RIP.

Haku pupdate.

Haku’s lymphoma was intially diagnosed in November of 2022. His initial remission ended this past January, and his restarted CHOP protocol failed shortly thereafter. His third, different treatment was ineffective, and, as of yesterday, we’re trying a fourth: Tanovea. It has a 40-50% chance of helping in stage IIIa, and we hope it’ll give him more happy days.

It’s clear, though, as we approach the end of this journey, that every additional good day is a gift, for him and us.

Khruangbin - A la Sala

Yes, yes, Khruangbin vibes, etc. Interesting interstitials that gives this an all-in-one-night throughline.

Continued groove and Malian-influenced guitar (along with many others) make this, well, what you'd expect. But also what'd you'd want.

(Still don't get why some call them psychedelic, though.)

Love the (hard to protect well) day-to-night package. Pressing pretty bit a bit noisy...

Cocteau Twins - Treasure

This might be my favorite Cocteau Twins album.

It's flawless from stasrt to finish, starting with the one-two punch of Ivo and Lorelei... and it never lets up.

I have to assume that the presence of new member Simon Raymonde is what kicked things up a notch.

Superb. No better place to start, if you're new to the Cocteau Twins...

Dave Edmunds - Repeat When Necessary

As you may recall, Rockpile put out a bunch of records during their brief lifespan mostly not under the Rockpile name. Here's one of Edmunds' two.

This starts out with the one-two punch of Girls Talk (Elvis Costello) and Crawling from the Wreckage (Graham Parker) - Edmunds wasn't much of a songwriter, but he was an great interpreter & player.

Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come

Back in the day, I gave a friend a Wire record, and he gave me this…the hardcore album for people who don't like hardcore.

And for people who do, too. It's kind of the definitive statement of what hardcore could be when put in the hands of guys who play anything, in any genre, but chose to do this. They're not referencing Ornette Coleman for nothing.

No better hardcore, in my opinion.

Alison's Halo - Eyedazzler (1992-1996)

Dubbed "Beautiful Noise” music (aw, c'mon folks, it's mostly shoegaze), these folks didn't last long, despite clear talent.

This collects basically all their output on two LPs. Lots of good stuff beyond the one track that was on Still in a Dream.

(Allmusic compares the vocalist Catherine Cooper to Liz Fraser, and I think they couldn't be more wrong…)

While I'm talking about something other than music and stuff…let's talk external SSDs for a minute.

High speed devices demand a lot from their connection. These drives tend to come with very short cables...for a reason. The longer the cable, the higher quality it has to be (often with electronic enhancements).

Don't replace the cable with a long one “for convenience”. Use the cable that came with the drive, or invest in an expensive Apple cable...don't snag a $15 random-letter-brand one.

Time Machine builds itself on top of fsevents, and snapshots deltas, and other increasingly complicated aspects of the file system.

SuperDuper purposefully doesn’t do that. We rely on the basics, because if something's wrong in the complex stuff, the basics are much more likely to work.

A diversity of approaches ensures your data remains safe. And there's not a big speed penalty - as you can see.

Tthis is, yes, a fast TB4 SSD, but it's only $250 (sometimes less)…what's your data worth?

I still can't believe the Josie and the Pussycats movie flopped. Not only are Rachel Leigh Cook,Tara Reid and Rosario Dawson totally winning as the band, but they're surrounded by comedy gold and great songs.

What the heck, 2001.

Kate Bush - The Dreaming

Something happens when an artist goes down a rabbit hole of obsession, driven to realize a specific vision. Kate Bush locked herself down with a Fairlight, producing herself, and made this absolute masterpiece...my favorite of her albums, by far.

Dense, dark, brooding-yet-playful, constantly surprising.

I have a few copies of it...this is a new one from Fish People with special artwork and a "belt" of chains.

Jackie McLean - Demon's Dance

I was going to say that this is awfully close to post-bop for 1970, but then I read that it was recorded in 1967...so maybe not so unusual.

A very good session from McLean, Woody Shaw (trumpet), Jack DeJohnette (drums), Lamont Johnson (piano) and Scott Holt (bass). It's always fun to listen to DeJohnette, especially, go all out swinging (title track) and then pull way back on the next. He knows what to do...
