Cake - Prolonging the Magic

After the Pulp video, and Yard Act, I was trying to think of another semi-recent band that made use of sprechgesang, and Cake came to mind.

Cake never really got any respect from critics - they were always slotted in as the "smirking, wise-ass college band". But, I mean, you could kind of say that about Yard Act, too...and Pulp.

Not to say Cake is as good as those bands, but I do enjoy their "shtick".

Dave Edmunds - Repeat When Necessary

As you may recall, Rockpile put out a bunch of records during their brief lifespan mostly not under the Rockpile name. Here's one of Edmunds' two.

This starts out with the one-two punch of Girls Talk (Elvis Costello) and Crawling from the Wreckage (Graham Parker) - Edmunds wasn't much of a songwriter, but he was an great interpreter & player.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Outtakes

Everyone, of course, has heard Time Out, one of the most famous and popular albums ever. They recently turned up additional tapes from those sessions, and here they are...and it's great to hear quite different (and equally great) versions of these classic tunes, plus a few extras.

Well worth your time. And money. Don't forget money.

Pink Floyd - Animals

One of the three a-bit-pompous-good mid-period Pink Floyd albums (Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and this) that are, I think, their creative peak (with WYWH being the best).

Still has Waters' self-pitying, high-school senior concepts, but they hadn't yet gotten ridiculous (hi, the Wall)…and the band is playing great, and collaboratively.

Has some of Gilmour's best work, too…

(My original copy from long, long ago, still perfect.)

While I'm talking about something other than music and stuff…let's talk external SSDs for a minute.

High speed devices demand a lot from their connection. These drives tend to come with very short cables...for a reason. The longer the cable, the higher quality it has to be (often with electronic enhancements).

Don't replace the cable with a long one “for convenience”. Use the cable that came with the drive, or invest in an expensive Apple cable...don't snag a $15 random-letter-brand one.

So, before, when I said “I think I hate Constellation” - I can now, at the end of it, say "I hate Constellation”.

Holy cow what an awful show. So sorry for everyone who put in good work to make it happen.

Here's an iOS question: Messages aren't showing up for me in CarPlay (so, I missed them sitting in the Logan Cell Phone lot waiting).

A friend has a "Show in CarPlay" toggle in Messages notification settings...but that's not there for me.

Anyone know what's going on?

I find it kind of amazing that Siri's notification announcement cannot pronounce "favorited"...and even pronounces the same word differently when reading it in two different apps.

Fah-vohr-et-id? Seriously?

The Police - Ghost in the Machine

This record and XTC's English Settlement spent a lot of time on my turntable in 1981/1982.

It was a pretty big pivot from the first three albums, leaving the "pure" guitar trio behind, and using quite a lot of synthesizer. Plus, Hugh Padgham gave these more ambitious tracks a big, atmospheric sound...something that would continue into their next (and last) record.

(Nautilus version from long ago.)

Yes - 90125 (Atlantic 75 Series)

Yes imploded/exploded quite a few times over the years, and when it broke into XYZ/Asia and this Trevor Horn-led version, 90125 came out with a new, very 80s-commercial sound.

You've definitely heard "Owner of a Lonely Heart”, which was mostly a Horn composition for a solo album. Kind of last-minute add-on Jon Anderson gave it (and the album) a more "Yes" feel.

New Atlantic 75 version sounds great.

Can I suggest that those who don't like the sport of cycling, or don't understand the sport - try watching the Netflix series "Tour de France: Unchained".

It's a pretty great edit of last year's Tour, and it gives a really good feel of how incredible these atheletes are. Yes, yes, baseball/football/soccer/etc, but look at what these folks put themselves through, and how truly difficult it is...and how exciting...

Khruangbin - A la Sala

Yes, yes, Khruangbin vibes, etc. Interesting interstitials that gives this an all-in-one-night throughline.

Continued groove and Malian-influenced guitar (along with many others) make this, well, what you'd expect. But also what'd you'd want.

(Still don't get why some call them psychedelic, though.)

Love the (hard to protect well) day-to-night package. Pressing pretty bit a bit noisy...

Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can

The opening track (Devil's Spoke) on this solid album feels a bit like a gloss on KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree", but also rock-influenced folk music in general.

It's a winning formula for her, and another extremely good LP.

In the middle of Strange Days (I had the LaserDisc and bought the DVD back in 1999 - kind of lucky, since it's impossible to find now)...and had forgotten that La La La Human Steps' Louise LeCavalier is in it.

Which made me remember that she dances with David Bowie in the Fame '90 video:

And, for more La La La Human Steps, here's a beautiful bit of Amelia featuring Mistaya Hemingway - six minutes of perfection:

Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)

Is there a more important musical artist over the past 50 years? Eno has appeared everywhere, from classical works to art rock to new wave to funk to arena rock…always doing something interesting in a genre that changed, perhaps permanently, after he gave it a push.

“Non-musician” my ass…

This, his second solo album, sounds as modern today as it did in 1974.

@viticci Federico - have you run into the problem where the Shortcuts "extract" action stops working and throws (generic) errors, on a basic ZIP with a folder in it, with no way to fix it, even after a reboot?

If so...have you found a way around the problem? Even happens with your (Library) shortcuts…

Haku pupdate.

Haku’s lymphoma was intially diagnosed in November of 2022. His initial remission ended this past January, and his restarted CHOP protocol failed shortly thereafter. His third, different treatment was ineffective, and, as of yesterday, we’re trying a fourth: Tanovea. It has a 40-50% chance of helping in stage IIIa, and we hope it’ll give him more happy days.

It’s clear, though, as we approach the end of this journey, that every additional good day is a gift, for him and us.

Milt Jackson - Jazz ‘n’ Samba

Starting this LP and asking…”what’s all this about Samba, then, Milt?” is forgivable…because all of side 1 is the “Jazz”. The “Samba” kicks in with side 2 and you can’t blame Bags for wanting to cash in a little.

The liner notes are amusing: “…spoke of (samba) as ephemeral and predicted that overproduction would run it into the ground.”

RvG definitely turned the dials up to 11 when recording this one…maybe 12.
