Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)

Is there a more important musical artist over the past 50 years? Eno has appeared everywhere, from classical works to art rock to new wave to funk to arena rock…always doing something interesting in a genre that changed, perhaps permanently, after he gave it a push.

“Non-musician” my ass…

This, his second solo album, sounds as modern today as it did in 1974.

@etherdiver I've never been able to choose. All his vocal albums make me wish he did more of them…

Your water and food is inadequate, foolish human. What I desire is dirty snow.

A bernese mounting dog, mid-chomp of some dirty snow.

Tom Tom Club - Tom Tom Club @vinylrecords

Better than any Talking Heads record imho. Found a nice cheap used copy.

@icastico @vinylrecords Well... don't know about that - but it's a great LP.

    Emma Anderson - Pearlies

Lush's reunion was cut short in 2016, and Emma Anderson had been working on songs for a new Lush album (post-EP) that never happened.

Some of that was repurposed and joined with new material for this solo album, which is quite melodic…some of it could be a soundtrack to a Peter Strickland movie.

I do miss the vocal interplay between Berenyi and Anderson, but it's nice to have Anderson back doing new music.

Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Atlantic 75/Acoustic Sounds)

Crazy jacket for this one that I can't figure out how to deal with yet. Crazy good mastering and pressing, too.

The obvious and inarguable peak of early Genesis. Super ambitious...but (at least from a story perspective) super...well, oblique. But everyone wanted to do a Rock Opera back then, and so... but the confusion doesn't detract from the overall greatness.

Here's an iOS question: Messages aren't showing up for me in CarPlay (so, I missed them sitting in the Logan Cell Phone lot waiting).

A friend has a "Show in CarPlay" toggle in Messages notification settings...but that's not there for me.

    Anyone know what's going on?

@WTL That 2nd one is the one that's not there.

The Art Ensemble of Chicago - Les Stances a Sophie (Soundtrack)

Free Jazz often loses me - I kind of need either a rhythmic or melodic component I can grab onto, or I get lost. I can appreciate the expression, but it makes for a difficult listen.

Fortunately, here, the avant-garde Art Ensemble of Chicago tosses me some bones, like the funky Theme de YoYo, with its chaotic horn breaks and free-jazz solos that still pull back to the core...

    Soul Coughing - El Oso

Three albums and four years in...and it all came to an end with this, the third - El Oso.

On paper, I'm not sure this could possibly work - avant garde keyboard player, jazz drummer, bassist and a free-association lyricist and "singer"...well, more like talk-singer. But what comes out is a funky, fun, weird mix of sensibilities.

Too bad intra-band nonsense destroyed them, but as I say, at least we've got the albums!

Elvis Costello and the Attractions - Imperial Bedroom

Here, Costello works with a "widescreen" producer - Geoff Emerick (yes, that Geoff Emerick) - and generates another great album, which some called a masterpiece. I'm reluctant to do so, mostly because he's continuing a series of amazing albums, and while this is more elaborate, I doesn't exceed those.

But, drugs and arrogance and fighting and whatever...produced a lot of great music.

    Pink Floyd - Animals

One of the three a-bit-pompous-good mid-period Pink Floyd albums (Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, and this) that are, I think, their creative peak (with WYWH being the best).

Still has Waters' self-pitying, high-school senior concepts, but they hadn't yet gotten ridiculous (hi, the Wall)…and the band is playing great, and collaboratively.

Has some of Gilmour's best work, too…

(My original copy from long, long ago, still perfect.)

@scottearle I mean, with the Wall, there's something to be said about creating something that incredibly bombastic out of a stupidly clichéd storyline. It's an achievement of sorts.

@scottearle I'm not entirely convinced he's found his way out of his arse.

Just realized that Portishead's last album, Third, came out 11 years after their eponymous 2nd album…and it's been 15 years since Third.

I mean, I guess it's been 10 years since we were going to get “a few EPs" from My Bloody Valentine any day now, so maybe time has just slowed down. :-)

ok look I know this is really stupid and pedantic, but come on, we’ve had 26 years to learn this

    It's Wi-Fi

not Wifi or WiFi or wifi or wi fi

    Wi-Fi. Hyphenated. Both words capitalized.

thank you for coming to my ted talk

(while you're here, “log in" is two words when being used as a verb… your login button or link should not say "login”, because the action they take is to "log in”)
