The Substack app for iOS is so bad. It doesn’t even support using the space bar to scroll on iPad. Even if you’re a big time Substack subscriber, why would you want to use this app rather than read in your web browser or email client?

ok look I know this is really stupid and pedantic, but come on, we’ve had 26 years to learn this

It's Wi-Fi

not Wifi or WiFi or wifi or wi fi

Wi-Fi. Hyphenated. Both words capitalized.

thank you for coming to my ted talk

(while you're here, “log in" is two words when being used as a verb… your login button or link should not say "login”, because the action they take is to "log in”)

@marcoarment Yes, but is it "in line" or "on line”?

As promised - the great recorded turntable sound-off!

So, I did more than I said I would. There's a shock.

Here are nine distinct recorded samples of a single track from The Great Jazz Trio, played on various combinations of turntables, cartridges and preamps. One is uncompressed, the rest are all “iTunes Plus" high-bitrate AAC.

They are, unfortunately, not volume normalized: I didn't want to scale digitally. You can adjust volume at will.

TFW five years after you reported a permissions bug, with no interaction in the intervening years, you get asked for a Sysdiagnose and find out that the reported bug is actually fixed in Sonoma…(it wasn't in Ventura).

Yay, I think?

Grace Slick - Sesame Street!

Grace Slick's brother was an animator who did this series for Sesame Street- and got his sister to do the vocals.

I vividly remember my younger brothers watching this (I was well past the age for Sesame Street at the time)…and had no idea the vocals were by her.

Yes - The Yes Album

The album where Yes became "Yes”, the missing piece being Steve Howe on guitar. And unlike a lot of "prog" albums, these songs are not crammed with too many ideas - just a lot of great playing.

What makes it work, too, is…Tony Kaye. I know Wakeman has his fans, but Kaye is a member of the group who isn't constantly drawing attention to himself. He solos when he should, and plays with, and not against, the group otherwise.

John Prine - John Prine

An album I've been avoiding for a long time, no doubt due to the shallow biases of a callow youth: the last thing I wanted to listen to was the strumming of a Chicago-based folk artist singing Appalachian/Nashville flavored songs.

Yeah, well, in time one matures somewhat.

Analog Productions pressing of the Atlantic 75th anniversary series: another gem.

In the time I've been traveling for work, I've gotten to drive a lot of different rental cars. Most of the time, they are brand new, and usually contain a lot of modern technology. It's downright annoying when a car doesn't have CarPlay.

The most surprising thing I came across in my rental car today was an actual ignition switch with a key instead of a push button start. I don't think I've used a key in years. I checked the registration and it's a 2024 model. 🤷‍♂️

I spent a good five minutes in the cereal aisle yesterday specifically looking for Pumpkin Spice Cheerios to no avail. Finally gave up, checked out and as I was heading to the car with my mountain of groceries I spied them. Right by the front entrance.

Note to grocery store managers: ALWAYS put a few of the special things with the normal things. Not just on the end caps or in the special displays. 🫤

Teenage Fanclub - Nothing Lasts Forever

It's been a lot of years since The Concept, but Teenage Fanclub is still putting out beautifully crafted, glimmering pop gems. They may not last "forever", but it's been a good, long, consistently enjoyable time.

Today is Haku's 8th birthday.

When he was diagnosed with lymphoma last year (and wobbler's earlier in the year), I wasn't sure he'd make it to this one...but the cancer is still in remission. It looks like we'll be on the "good" side of the bell curve.

While his wobbler's has continued its slow progress, PT (both land and swim), walks, and assistance when needed have kept him happy and active.

All dogs are good dogs, but he's a very good dog.

Happy Birthday, Haku: I hope you get another!

@daringfireball @gruber It's felt like they've been kind of winding Surface down for a while. I don't know whether that's truly the case, though.

The pre-launch cancelation and memory-hole-ing of the Surface Neo back in 2020 seemed...ominous.

Last night, I got to see the band Cake for the first time in my life. It was a fabulous show, and they basically did two sets with an intermission in between. After the intermission, they gave away a peach tree to a fan in the audience. It was so badass, and they are simply incredible live. Apparently, this is my year for seeing bands that I’ve listened to for decades, but never got to see in person.

To go further - Sour was a good record, and this is a great one.

Although I’m not sure how someone who "sold me for parts" is a vampire within the context of that particular metaphor…given how strong the lyrics are in general, though, I'll give her a pass. :-)

@Jonathanglick I greatly prefer it to most Taylorish earworms. Extremely smart song, and catchy.
