Morning.
04:30. The alarm clock rings and the DB app greets me with a friendly push: «Trip not possible».
Ha! Challenge accepted!

Hi!

I travelled from 🇵🇹 #Portugal to 🇫🇮 #Finland by train.

Join me for the second part, where I cross Spain with slow trains only, chase nez cassé locomotives in southern France and ride some sleepy branch lines in northern Italy.

Question to :

Going from Madrid to Lisbon clearly seems to require the two changes at Badajoz and Entroncamento, ok. But I cannot figure out whether there is any help with those connections in case of delay - and also whether that connection exists every day throughout the year.

(For a work commitment, I really need to find out whether it is even possible to count on train travel to Lisbon these days or not)

dominicstucki,
@dominicstucki@urbanists.social avatar

@wolfgangcramer
Are you trying to book in July? To me, it looks like booking for train categories other than AVE and avlo are not open yet for dates beyond beginning of May. At least, this is what I can see on other lines with a quick research. Renfe annoyingly sometimes opens bookings only as little as two months ahead, so the only thing which helps would be check again later. Maybe our expert @jon or Spain expert @claudsch know more?

@vermeer @wolfgangcramer
It's a bit of a hassle, it seems that the connections ib Badajoz got worse. I guess there is no way around checking CP (Badajoz - Entroncamento) and Renfe (Madrid - Badajoz) timetables separately for the day you want to travel. There is, as far as I know, unfortunately also no through ticketing.

@wolfgangcramer
I wouldn't worry too much, but it's of course personal preference of how much certainty you like. I guess, the chance of a cancelled train in Spain is not higher than in France, Germany or elsewhere - only that there are not so many alternatives. And there's still the possibility to take a bus or travel via Vigo-Porto if there are construction works or other problems on the Badajoz line.

To travel from Germany 🇩🇪 to Switzerland 🇨🇭 you could for the hundredth time take a cramped, unloved and most certainly delayed ICE 4 along the Rheintalbahn. Or...

Hunderttausend Höllenhunde! Wer plant so einen Schwachsinn?! 📐💣
Auf der stand: Instektengitter bestellen. Eigentlich easy.

The next possibility to travel from Oslo to Norway's 2nd biggest city Bergen by day train is in nearly three days! 🤯
Seats and sleeper compartments for the night trains are available, though.

On Wednesday, I took the line. I got the impression, that this could be a great route for passengers from Belgium to Switzerland, the German Rhine valley and Strasbourg. But it isn't quite, yet.
I think, we have a little 🚨 problem here. Let me explain my thoughts.

Do you know that feeling, when something which is progressing gradually for years suddenly reaches a tipping point?
In Zurich 🇨🇭, this is currently happening with trams - the trusty old Tram 2000 is becoming increasingly rare. They are being replaced by «Flexity» on more and more lines.
During the last weeks, it has changed from occasional «Oh, look, a new one! 😐» to «Oh, look, an old one! 🥰» for me.

This network diagram in a not transport-related ad looks better than many real life examples designed to help passengers navigate in complex transit networks. 😅

On a train in Norway. It's raining. Sitting in the lounge chair at the panorama window. Coffee and a warm cinnamon bun on the table. Shearwater's hauntingly beautiful acoustic version of 'Radio Silence' on the headphones.
Pretty perfect Sunday morning. 🥰

«An advanced city is not one where the poor own a car, but one where the rich use public transport.»
— Enrique Peñalosa

I guess, you can fairly assume your city has reached this point, when furniture shops choose the tram to advertise a CHF 525 wooden chair.
