Hunderttausend Höllenhunde! Wer plant so einen Schwachsinn?! 📐💣
Auf der stand: Instektengitter bestellen. Eigentlich easy. Grmbl.

@partim

«An advanced city is not one where the poor own a car, but one where the rich use public transport.»
— Enrique Peñalosa

I guess, you can fairly assume your city has reached this point, when furniture shops choose the tram to advertise a CHF 525 wooden chair.

Hi!

Eben! 🤐

Do you know that feeling, when something which is progressing gradually for years suddenly reaches a tipping point?
In Zurich 🇨🇭, this is currently happening with trams - the trusty old Tram 2000 is becoming increasingly rare. They are being replaced by «Flexity» on more and more lines.
During the last weeks, it has changed from occasional «Oh, look, a new one! 😐» to «Oh, look, an old one! 🥰» for me.

dominicstucki,
@dominicstucki@urbanists.social avatar

On the busy lines 2, 4, 11 and 14, Tram 2000 are already a rare sight. It must be weeks since I last saw one on the 11. On the 3, Cobras are taking over, on 8 and 15 «Sänften» are replacing the classic «T2000». 17 ist getting flexibilised quickly and 13 also already got a fair share of the new ones. I'm now at the point where I actively take a detour, if I have time and the camera with me, when I spot a T2000 on one of the "big" lines. 📷

A double T2000 working a line 17 service. The consist runs on separated but asphalted tracks at the side of a road along a high hedge. The scenery is lit from warm winter afternoon sunlight. High office buildings to the right and a forest covered hill in the background.

Bonus: A picture from my favourite line, where T2000 are still going strong.

Arrival in Le Puy-en-Velay with its impressive skyline. As in many small town stations in France, the station was recently moderniesed. The station building got a fresh layer of paint and all platforms were raised to 55cm.

Professional and less professional passenger information at Latour-de-Carol. At least, I know now, that the only possibility to buy a ticket for the Renfe train is on the train itself — no problem.
That the train cancellations on the Train Jaune are only communicated by an A4 note but not in the online timetable is, however, outrageous. Imagine travelling here three hours from Toulouse just to see this sheet of paper. 🤬

Morning.
04:30. The alarm clock rings and the DB app greets me with a friendly push: «Trip not possible».
Ha! Challenge accepted!

This last week has shown, that doing a business trip to the badly connected very North of Europe is possible by train and ferry. Is it something for everyone? Maybe not - but it's also not something only for nerds. If you like travelling, if you can work remote and if you're willing to invest some of your own time and money (or working for a company that covers all costs), then this is a wonderful way to see new things, widen your horizon and travel comfortably and sustainably.

The discussions in Oslo and elsewhere show that better international rail connections in Europe aren't just an unrealistic dream of rail nerds. It is doable, but what we need is a strong support for international rail travel on European and national level, in the society and among policy makers - a real shift of priorities.

Zürich HB 🇨🇭, 07:39.
My train will leave at 07:49, which is in 10 minutes, and it's only at the 24th position of the departure board!

That's what public transport should look like! 🚄🚄🚄

Also, allez-hop! 😊

To travel from Germany 🇩🇪 to Switzerland 🇨🇭 you could for the hundredth time take a cramped, unloved and most certainly delayed ICE 4 along the Rheintalbahn. Or...

dominicstucki,
@dominicstucki@urbanists.social avatar

... you take lake Constance's "night ferry". 😉

I'm the last passenger to leave the bistro. I'd love to just stay and sail back and forth over the lake on this quiet night. But I'm also very tired, so I gather on the car deck with the other passengers and enter Switzerland only moments after.

On Wednesday, I took the line. I got the impression, that this could be a great route for passengers from Belgium to Switzerland, the German Rhine valley and Strasbourg. But it isn't quite, yet.
I think, we have a little 🚨 problem here. Let me explain my thoughts.
⬇️🧵Thread 🧵⬇️

View out of the window from the Bruxelles-Luxembourg Intercity. There are wide fields, a forest in the distance, a little pond in the foreground, all under a cloudy but bright sky.

dominicstucki,
@dominicstucki@urbanists.social avatar

First of all: Do we need to care?
To answer that, let's look at the alternatives: You can travel from Bruxelles to Strasbourg and Basel via Paris 🟦, via Frankfurt 🟥 or via Luxembourg ⬛.
🗺️⬇️

[basemap: OpenStreetMap contributors]

dominicstucki,
@dominicstucki@urbanists.social avatar

Let's look at it:
✅ Bruxelles–Luxembourg is a decent hourly IC service, which will become even 20mins faster, once Infrabel's line upgrade is finished.
✅ Strasbourg–Basel is a half hourly fast TER200 with Intercity character.
❎ But between Luxembourg and Strasbourg, badly or not timed connections result in long waiting times, the trains are only semi-fast TER, you have to change trains twice and the Metz–Strasbourg line has huge timetable gaps up to four hours. ⛔

Some last shots of the station. If only they had put in warm light LED instead of the cold, white ones...
The station now was completely deserted. After a few last photos, I had the urgent need for a warm blanket and a hot tea and therefore retreated to my nearby B&B.
