PSA: How to open a Tesla door in an emergency

I have friends that happily drive their kids around strapped into child seats in Teslas. I ask them a few questions about this, and I've never had a friend of mine who is a parent answer these questions satisfactorily:

  1. Do you know that Tesla doors might not open if there's no power?

  2. Do you know how to manually open the doors?

  3. Have you timed how long it would take you to get your kids out?

Here's how to get out

@mekkaokereke I have an aunt who avoided cars with electric locks and windows for as long as possible, and when driving over the Sunshine Skyway, would look for ships and adjust her speed to avoid the main span when they were near. Needless to say, we all got the lesson.

And one day: https://www.tampabay.com/news/2020/05/06/the-sunshine-skyway-bridge-plunged-into-tampa-bay-40-years-ago/

Oh no! Texas (Tejas) is majority Latiné?! What's next?

The Arid Zone? (Arizona)
The Angels? (Los Angeles)
The Meadows? (Las Vegas)
Colored Red? (Colorado)
Mountain State? (Montana)

This is terrible! Anya Taylor Joy is replacing us!

Reminder, most Latiné people are white. Relax.

Texts from my spouse (in DFW airport, on a week-long combo wedding + old friends + work + family trip to 4 cities in TX, so she is trashed):

Dear heavens, traveling is miserable. My 7:08 flight is now leaving at 10:30pm.

My plane is not leaving until 11:30pm. I have to teach on Monday at 8am. This is a mess.

Apparently they've lost a pilot.

[me] Did they find the pilot yet? What airline is this?

No, and then they cancelled the flight.
Delta.
I think all the airlines suck.

Saturday at the beach (in FL), saw a (very) fat-tired wheel chair. Not sure this works for self-propulsion, but given the sand, wheels that large seem necessary. Maybe a hovercraft wheelchair (and eelchair!) would also work.

Cleaning out my tabs, found this (and other) interesting articles:
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23744235.2022.2140822
Someone aerosol-lab-adjacent got Covid, was studied a whole darn lot. At least for one person, the history, distribution, and Covid content of exhaled aerosols.

TLDR: 0.3-3 micrometer is best to filter (i.e., what an N-95 mask stops). First days after symptoms most important; if you wake up feeling like you have a cold, two days home cuts bulk of risk to others. DON'T SING, TRY NOT TO TALK.

New from the home county, a little hard to figure out exactly the scope of the injustice but it sounds like the default plan in St. Pete FL is to kick blacks off their land to build a SportsBall arena, and when the first arena is "old", do it again. Arena is important enough to receive public subsidy, but affordable housing, not. Priorities, I guess. Fuck Sportsball, if it cannot survive without a subsidy.

Saw this unfamiliar tree in the FL yard, looked it up with image search, it is a "Chinese tallowtree". The following is per wikipedia -- on the one hand it is incredibly invasive (23% of ALL trees in Houston area) but on the other hand, it could be an interesting crop, second only to algae and oil palms in per-acre oil production (wikipedia says "citation needed") at 4500 kg of seeds per hectare-year. The oil/tallow would need refining, there's some poison in them.

This is sort of an experiment, I subscribe to some newspapers, and thought I would see how easy/hard it is to share links. LA times, I could not get the link, also could not find a place to complain, so sent an email to billing (a bug report w/ credible threat of cancellation). Houston Chronicle, I got this far: https://digital.olivesoftware.com/olive/odn/houstonchronicle/shared/ShowArticle.aspx?doc=HHC%2F2023%2F11%2F10&entity=Ar02101&sk=C4263984&mode=text

I may have mentioned this once before, but it's always "fun" what doesn't make it into the news:

https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms7346

"The analysis of long-term tide gauge records identified an extreme sea-level rise (SLR) event during 2009–10. Within this 2-year period, the coastal sea level north of New York City jumped by 128 mm."

Definitely got to keep on worrying about those parking spaces.

After demoing and helping at the cargo bike demo, it's pretty clear that I should (in my copious free time) offer "longtail 101" to give people a chance to practice carrying loads that they are more willing to drop than their own children. Use 4 5-gallon water containers, compare a pair loaded front, a pair loaded rear, and a full (160lb) load of all four.

Achievement unlocked: towed a trailer with two bikes on it behind the Big Dummy, with an adult also riding on the deck.

May have hit upon a winning argument for the NextDoor crowd: because we let housing get so expensive, it is now financially interesting for developers to buy any large lot that is on the market, and do a "hostile" MA-40B affordable housing development with as many units as they can fit on that land (a recent one I think resulted in 12 units, 3 of those affordable, replacing a single-family home. It wasn't a great place to add 12 units, but state law and the invisible hand put them there).

Just learned Bikes at Work makes trailers that attach to bikes, one of which is big enough it could carry an Urban Arrow if say, ours broke down on a ride somewhere and we needed to haul it home. That would be a lot easier than needing to immediately go rent a truck...
Anyone have one? Or know of other options I should consider?

It makes me downright queasy that private equity bought 1Password. I'm sure that's an overreaction, private equity has never bought companies and fucked them up just to turn a quick profit, have they? It's so tempting to put 2FA in there too, but, SPOF, that would suck.

Inspired by @ai6yr, who skipped riding last week because it was raining cats and dogs. A question related to cycling in the rain:

Q8. What are the considerations, aside from gear, related to riding in wet weather? What do you do to maintain traction and visibility? How else do you ride differently, or what else do you do when cycling in the rain?

dr2chase,
@dr2chase@ohai.social avatar

@ascentale @ai6yr @lkanies tire-grabbing rain grates is one of the reasons I default to 60mm tires. They don't fit, they even offer a prayer of not getting too badly caught by trolley tracks.

Because spouse is out of town, I decided it was time to upgrade the (Tomato) router. What a clusterfuck. At every turn, you are exhorted to "clear the NVRAM settings!" without a clear description of what that will entail when you do it. Fortunately, my expectations were almost set low enough, and because I had access to the internet over my phone I could find out what the default router password would be when it woke up completely wiped. Seems like a really important thing to mention, BUT NO!

I have a parallel RLC circuit with a current source. If I measure the output current through the capacitor. What is the static gain?

dr2chase,
@dr2chase@ohai.social avatar

@drcaberry this is sort of a word problem because it depends on knowing the frequency implied by the word "static" (0) (and perhaps also to infer the entire circuit from the word "parallel"). Those are probably reasonable words to expect people in the field to know (it's been 40 years, I know them), but those slightly outside will be unsure.

Next, from @daihard:

Q3. What is your take on e-bikes?

My stand is that e-bikes are great tools to empower people of all ages and abilities to travel without driving - in other words, efficient car replacements. OTOH, I know there are people who consider e-bikes "electric mopeds" regardless of the configuration and want them banned from trails and cycle paths.

What are your thoughts?

(Added by me: How have your thoughts re: e-bikes changed over time?)

dr2chase,
@dr2chase@ohai.social avatar

@ascentale @daihard A3
People who hate e-bikes are mistaken, and are more in love with silly categories than they are with reality. E-bikes are great for people with daily hills, for people who have not spent 40,000 miles growing legs+lungs, for people who are for whatever reason strength-impaired, for people with just-a-bit-too-long commutes who need the extra speed, for delivery cyclists who must put in more miles than most of us can sustain day after day, ET CETERA.
