Ironic that Marc Rebillet, an incredibly creative, energetic, extremely human performer was preceded by an interminable sequence of unremarkable music that was generated by “image-to-music” .

The slowly deflating bubble continues. People are just not that interested to go back to the office.

This building in a suburban office park was occupied by Nio, the Chinese carmaker, who did not renew their lease in October 2023. Without a new tenant, the building went into foreclosure with $25M of outstanding debt.

@ukuku Probably figured they didn’t need an office to attract US talent.

But more telling is that there wasn’t another company snapping up the space. Six years ago, there would have been no problem getting another tenant.

@EverydayMoggie @samiamsam It’s not easy to do it because you need a. window access and b. nearby plumbing. Office buildings usually have huge floor spaces that are far from windows, and have plumbing concentrated around the toilet/kitchen areas on the floor.

Not saying it can’t be done. But it’s likely to end up with housing units around the perimeter of each floor, with the central areas walled off.

If you’re a #cars guy in the #sfba, you’ve probably heard of Alice’s restaurant in La Honda. I went up there recently and I saw this sign.

This is chickenshit. If you want to raise prices, raise your menu prices. I’m willing to pay for the difference. Don’t blame “inflation” and then add 6% to your prices off-menu. This shit should be illegal.

Cowards.

@drahardja@sfba.social avatar

Also, disturbing commentary from an ex-worker of Alice’s:

“Alice’s is a horrible restaurant, they have “weekend menus” where they raise prices dramatically to scalp customers, they mistreat and underpay workers, and the quality and care for the raw food is despicable. The amount of cross contamination in the kitchen is unbelievable, I have seen fresh fish sitting out for hours in the sunlight before anyone bothered to put it away. Do not eat here!! The 6% up charge is the least of your worries if you choose to eat at this despicable restaurant. How do I know? I used to be an employee and witnessed firsthand all of the above mentioned issues and many more!”

Raising prices on weekends is understandable. But the suggestion about poor food handling is not great.

"A Tesla Model 3 sedan was traveling westbound on Foothill Boulevard at more than twice the 35 mph speed limit when it barreled through a red light about 2:30 a.m. at Sierra Madre Boulevard, hit a curb and struck a power pole, according to the Pasadena Police Department. There were six people in the car...

All six people involved in the crash were between 17 and 22 years old, authorities said."

Three killed. Power out.

#Texas is losing Californian transplants again. No surprise to me, as Texas politicans use Californians as rhetoric bait—at the same time boasting about how Californians are moving into the state to create the next Silicon Valley in Austin, while simultaneously scapegoating Californians as disgusting commie liberals invading their state, lumping them together with “illegal immigrants” in their xenophobic rhetoric.

Not said in the article is the fact that Texas law is hostile to non-cis-het people, especially those with a uterus. You can’t pay me enough money to relocate to Texas (or any number of southern red states), because that would add a mortal risk, if not to me directly, then to someone close to me.

The recent influx of tech workers to Texas was a mirage anyway, fueled more by tax giveaways than any systemic change. Now that the money has run dry, companies are finding a different state to fleece.

“Texas Attracted California Techies. Now It’s Losing Thousands of Them.”

@Hawaii That’s actually an interesting program. I wonder how many of the transplants sold their house and bought property in Hawai’i, vs. renting out their existing property, etc.

What was the backlash based on? Surely the transplants brought money into the Hawai’ian economy from the mainland. Did they cause a significant property price increase?

@zorinlynx The politicians? I think they already realize it. They’re just doing it to get votes and profit from office.

How long will it take for voters to realize it, I think is the question.

This is anecdotal, but I now personally know two employees of -related companies whose valuations have imploded within the past month, and they are now looking to bail. One company lost 73% of their (publicly traded) value in a month. The other one is a startup whose founder (according to my friend) has “finally snapped”, and the company is now in freefall.

It feels like the bubble is bursting right now.
