Third day debugging GPU workgroup atomics to squeeze more perfomance from my raytracer, but it still hangs :(

Here's a cool debug visualization though :)

Unity, serious talk! The only pattern shouldn't be a Try pattern (also if you're using a Try pattern, start the method with the word Try).

Sometimes I know a thing will work, and I specifically want an exception if it doesn't, and no, I don't intend to catch it 'cause I know it'll work.

efi,
@efi@chitter.xyz avatar

@Nifflas after learning Racket I see "try" as an anti-pattern :blobfoxlaugh:

efi,
@efi@chitter.xyz avatar

@Nifflas racket is a lisp, so every function by default returns a value and exceptions are handled through the "continuations" system, which is a higher abstraction layer with a separate stack, sort of, so to handle an exception you have to explicitly create a continuation barrier that handles it, no generic try unless you are being very rude to the language; you gotta explicitly say "im gonna catch every exception, sorry" and then it's ok to do that, but the upper layer -knows- this now and can still see that an exception was handled

efi,
@efi@chitter.xyz avatar

@Nifflas oh... oh goddess... ok... that's so much worse??? like, ok, you can have Option like Rust, but... that's what null is for? polymorphics? oh no, what a rabbit hole

random brain wandering:

Suppose you have a cellular space like a grid or a quad tree or such. Each cell intersecting a shape (say, a triangle) records relative surface feature (say, a plane) that might be useful for recovering or extrapolating a nearest point on surface. Maybe a cell stores an authoritative surface feature, or maybe it can have several, doesn't really matter for this post.

Then, empty neighbors use that data to generate their own (non-overlapping) relative surface features.

efi,
@efi@chitter.xyz avatar

@aeva is this like... how far away the minecraft torch is so we know the light in the block???

efi,
@efi@chitter.xyz avatar

@aeva neat, you could define the plane by its normal to the closest surface and then it's a vector field
it would kinda look a bit like gravity vectors, but discarding the mass and actual distance

efi,
@efi@chitter.xyz avatar

@aeva I can imagine this being useful as some kind of proxy for global illumination, but im too 3AM brained for this

Is there a Linux [window manager / desktop environment / whatever they're called these days] that has good support for fractional resolution scaling on hidpi displays? My aging eyes really want 150% scaling for this Framework 13 laptop, but gnome only offers 100% and 200%.

EDIT: so far KDE does the right thing. I wish there were more options though.

efi,
@efi@chitter.xyz avatar

@aeva I think it should be possible, but it's not gonna look that good... what if you change the font size to fit you better rather than the entire GUI?
