Still under the thumb of the old at the mo. Doing lots of "nerve flossing" exercises and spine decompression. Bloody bodies. If we'd paid for these bodies we'd want our money back (or we'd be paying an expensive contract to keep upgrading to new models).

@philbetts Whaaa? No x-ray vision? I at least want bionic knees in my upgrades.

Once upon a time (i.e. ~10 years ago) you could easily buy pocket digital cameras, with a decently large sensor and optical zoom, able to make good photos for a reasonable price (100-200€).
I assume modern smartphones have eroded the market, but there is only so much you can do with the space available on a smartphone, so thought there was still some market for small and not expensive cameras.
And yet a quick search only returned 500€+ options, which is the same entry level price as a reflex body.
Is there anything on the market that makes decent photos and doesn't cost as much as a laptop?

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@j_bertolotti only no-name Chinese cameras. Smartphones have become so capable that it has decimated that particular market (and probably the entry level dslr, mirrorless market too). Second hand the only option these days.

  • The bluesky team has provided a roadmap, indicating plans to fully implement federation in early 2024
  • They also talked about housing governance of the at the IETF
  • A high-profile case of impersonation of the Kyiv Independent

@fediversereport Everything I read about Bluesky's federation seems to be more about load balancing than the way the Fediverse does it (lots of independent instances, each with different names that happen to speak to each other if they want to or aren't blocked). So centralised (control) and distributed (for performance) for BSky? Maybe I'm reading it wrong.

The public have long not been able to purchase fireworks in Australia. I have no idea why we think we have an unalienable right to blast these things with impunity. One at 5am this morning. I'm not a killjoy (honest guv) but it is time to ban the sale of fireworks to the public (can you tell I got out of bed the wrong side?... which I admit would be difficult)

@mxtthxw I've seen a few great public displays. Admit I'm puzzled why we don't go and see great laser light shows rather than the co-ordinated sequenced launch of colourful munitions.

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@mxtthxw True. Many councils get a right ear bashing when they say they can't fund a public fireworks show (now or New Year) because of cutbacks but the public attitude seems to be that a firework display outlay needs to be ring-fenced and essential services much less so.

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@mxtthxw Actually my other half and I often talk about a wonderful nearly s*** display we saw in a local school loooong ago and they had these unintentionally comical fireworks that went up in a kind of white noise woosh, exploded with a whimper that sounded like a fart. The Brit crowd was, of course, highly amused.

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@mxtthxw Exactly.

But then again, maybe not
It’s not only why? But how?

Had a succession of Sennheiser headphones over the years. Get the feeling I should've gone for the Koss Porta pro's decades ago instead.

@Stoat Which?The Porta pros?

emsquared,

@Stoat Ah. Probably why I thought about the Porta pros. The build on the Sennheisers has got noticeably worse over the years. At least the Koss have a lifetime warranty.

I like to post a spooky meme or pic every day when it's Hallowe'en.

Scottish people used to carve turnips instead of pumpkins and dressing up is called "guising" here. The more you know.

Purple wash over a photo of a skeleton crushed by a rock. Sandy ground, more rocks in the background.

emsquared,
@emsquared@mastodon.social avatar

@Stoat If we ever send an updated voyager spacecraft record out into the cosmos then this is the kind of thing we need on it to let aliens know how far we developed as a species.
