When I was a kid I feel like a lot of hobbies were presented as "Hey! Stamps are cool you can do some fun stamp collecting by saving some off envelopes" whereas now when I search for some hobby related content it's exclusively "THIS HOBBY IS MY WHOLE IDENTITY AND LIFE AND HERE'S HOW YOU LEVEL UP TO HOBBY LEVEL ONE THOUSAND STARTING NOW"

Bring back slacker level hobby engagement!

Starting to write the R values on our sleeping pads now that we have apples-to-apples ASTM numbers available. Some of the revised ASTM values are a significant drop from original claimed R values.

@Verso R value in this case is insulating rating (0-1 = nada, 1-2 = summer only, 4+ now we’re getting somewhere). Manufacturers for years had no common standard set for this so some were just sort of making it up. ASTM institute set industry standards just last year so after a century of outdoor gear sales we finally have some way to truly know how warm a sleeping pad will keep you.

Seattle Public Schools is really going to suffer from cutting off HCC and advanced academics. Seattle private school applications are through the ROOF right now because of this. SPS will end up losing students, losing funding, and slip into a precipitous decline even worse than it is now.

(my kids both go to public, my wife teaches in public… we’re advocates for public education but none of the current SPS policies will result in positive outcomes for public education)

@cheribaker Plenty of schools will end up reducing staffing even further as a result of this. I know private schools that are head hunting teachers out of public in seattle right now. this is going to be a brain drain of talent and capability but it will have eliminated some bad looking numbers for SPS that, rather than address, they chose to just erase by killing off these programs.

Proud to be the go-to hair braider in our house. I enjoy the fact that I can repair my truck, fix our house, and also sew, braid, and cook for the family.

None of these things need to be gender roles. They can just be human roles and I hope more men embrace being full people that have all the skills.

I have subscription fatigue like everyone else but I'll say the one exception to that is my @flexibits subscription which gets me Fantastical and Cardhop. The monthly regularity of Fantasical improvements (fixes and new features and small really helpful tweaks to existing features) is ongoing and reliable. Apple Reminders is more competent that Siri when it comes to understanding intent.

I dropped “broc in bag” into my groceries list and it automatically slotted it into the Produce section.

Meanwhile half the time when I ask Siri to add something to my groceries list it tells me that “I can’t find a grocery list”.

My (teen) son and I are playing the 1993 LucasArts classic game Day of the Tentacle and one of the puzzles requires familiarity with a VCR including what SP/EP means and he was just totally stumped. This was my “I have a very specific set of skills” moment (the skills being my Gen X VCR mastery).

Heading out from the campsite along the lake we ran into a puget sound energy fisheries team stocking the lake by basically t-shirt cannoning sockeye salmon fry into the water. It was a very neat encounter.

Mastodon and Threads both completely missing trending story of the #earthquake in Taiwan. Twitter (RIP) has Tsunami as top trending right now so it is still close. Bsky actually sort of does the worst in that there is no trending section and the best in the sense that at least there is a public bot that shows trending topics and has the earthquake, not just tsunami, as the hot topics https://bsky.app/profile/nowbreezing.ntw.app

@cpep it does for me as well, but only if I know that there was an earthquake. I'm looking at the trending topics in the UI (that screenshot) that would ideally be showing this significant event in close to real time.

@kjhealy most of the time I think those "virality baffles" are a good thing, but I really wish we could solve for trending/breaking news so we could finally put Twitter out of its misery.
