Why is 'laugh' written with -ugh while it ends with an [f] sound?

It's because the spelling 'laugh' reflects how the word was pronounced in Late Middle English, some 500 years ago.

Click the video to listen to a phonetic reconstruction of how this verb evolved from 3rd-century BC Proto-Germanic to modern-day Standard English.

The Middle English to Early Modern English stages are based on the dialect of the region of London.

Apple Music has such a poor recommendation system, even though apps collect loads of identifiable data about me.

Apple knows what music I like, which podcasts I watch, which books I read, and how I exercise. What are they doing with all this identifiable data?

In contrast, I use a throwaway account to sign in with , I pay with gift cards. They don't know who I am. I listen to a couple of tracks, skip a few, and then almost all the recommendations that follow match my taste. 🤯

some good news: thanks to @ondrej and the folks at Apple who pushed this through, as of MacOS 14.4.1, dig's man page on Mac OS now no longer says "domain information groper”! (it had been fixed in the upstream version of dig since 2017)

here's the before and after! it's really just so nice to see that things can get fixed ❤

As a deep-in-my-dna-nightowl, I wish more apps would do what Streaks App (by @qzervaas ) does and let me choose when a new days starts.

I have a bunch of workarounds for Apple Reminders to generate my completed tasks log for the day when I finish at 1 or 2 am, just so it grabs everything from my "day" (2am to 2am roughly).

Big Tech is the equivalent of Big Tobacco.

They are absolutely aware that they are peddling behavioral addictions that cripple 10% of the population (conservatively, imo), & that their products, which are building vast empires of cash for a few white men who own them, are harming 100% of human society.

I see them no differently. I am sad that anyone is duped by their pretend "philosophies" taken straight out of an Ayn Rand CrackerJack box as a snack to keep their power trip going. It's profit.

How can we prevent Wikipedia from crumbling under the weight of "AI" garbage spewing, and disinformation specialists' gleeful use of the garbage?

@molly0xfff says you can help best by becoming a Wikipedia editor.

It's not difficult. We all need to participate.

If you love horror movies please give my daughter's TeenHorrorCast a listen. She's so right that she, as a girl, had a really different take (and the right take I think) on this film than I did at first, and she changed the way I thought about it completely.

A lot of no-car advocates really have their order of operations wrong. The first step should be making public transit as accessible and easy to use as possible. That includes things like making sure people have the personal mobility equipment they need to use transit, like wheelchairs and scooters. Making sure elevators are working. Making public transit free, if possible.

Eliminate the need to use cars first, then disrupt car infrastructure.
