You don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon!

All links on Mastodon count as 23 characters towards your post limit, no matter how long the links actually are.

Link shortener services like bit.ly, t.co etc track users who click on their links. This is really bad for privacy. If you use link shorteners on Mastodon, people may assume you are just doing it for tracking purposes.

More info at https://fedi.tips/you-dont-need-link-shorteners-on-mastodon

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. Just been pointed out that the official iOS app has a bug which causes links to be more than 23 characters. You can avoid this bug by using a third party iOS app such as Toot! or Ice Cubes or Ivory, or by logging in on your server's website.

Pixelfed is a photo sharing social network, the Fediverse's alternative to Instagram.

You can find out more from the official website at:

➡️ https://pixelfed.org

The site has a server list and app list (click ☰ if you're on mobile).

The official @pixelfed apps are in public beta testing, and there are third party Pixelfed apps available such as @vernissage for iPhone and @PixelDroid for Android.

You can follow Pixelfed accounts from Mastodon, and Mastodon accounts from Pixelfed.

feditips, to random
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

You can follow many types of Fediverse accounts from your Mastodon account.

For example, @Iancylkowski is a Pixelfed account, but you can click on it and follow it and interact with it just like a Mastodon account.

Another example, @theatticdwellers is a PeerTube account and you can follow that, watch its videos and interact with them entirely through Mastodon.

This is possible because different Fediverse server types use a common technical standard to communicate, called ActivityPub.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

Because different server types talk to each other, it means the Fediverse is collaborative rather than competitive.

When Mastodon's user numbers exploded in 2022, this also meant that all the other Fediverse platforms got a much bigger audience as well. New Mastodon users don't just follow Mastodon accounts, they also follow PeerTube, Pixelfed accounts etc.

Centralised social networks like Twitter, Facebook etc hate this kind of collaboration, but the Fediverse is built upon it.

You might even want to try signing up on a non-Mastodon server yourself!

Different server types can have very different sets of features, so it's common for people on the Fediverse to have separate accounts on different server types.

For example, someone might have a Mastodon account for discussions and a PeerTube account for publishing long videos.

Here are a few Fediverse server types you might want to try exploring: https://fedi.tips/what-other-kinds-of-servers-are-on-the-fediverse

In real life, I've seen good, sensible, compassionate people turn into racists, bigots and conspiracy theorists.

Why? Because they were radicalised into bigotry.

This happens when people get exposed again and again to lies spread by extreme bigoted groups, usually about vulnerable minorities the extremists want to persecute.

It is really important for Fediverse admins to block this material. The further these lies spread, the greater the danger to minorities.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

I blocked qoto.org some time ago, yet here there are people replying to my thread from qoto.org

This is another reason why "leaving it to the individual" doesn't work, certain other instances simply aren't respecting blocks. They're getting their replies tagged onto my threads and there's nothing I can do to stop them.

The irony of this is qoto.org claims to leave blocking entirely up to the individual. Yet they refuse to respect my blocking of them.

Do you want to browse trending news items and trending links on Mastodon? Here's how to do it:

📱 If you're using the official app, click the magnifying glass 🔍 icon at the bottom and then select the "News" tab at the top.

💻 If you're logged in through your server's website, click the # Explore link at the right of the screen, then the "News" tab at the top.

Third party apps may have a different kind of interface to access this feature.

If you want people's advice about any topic, type your question and tag it with #AskFedi, which is kind of like a bat signal for advice on the Fediverse 🦇

If you want a post to be shared, try adding "Boosts appreciated!". Some servers may even have an emoji for this such as :boost_ok:

By the way, remember that if you want your post shared publicly you have to give it a Public or Unlisted visibility setting. (More info about post visibility settings here: https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/)

Takahē is a new kind of Fediverse server which is aimed at small to medium size servers. It's unusual as it allows the same server to host multiple domains, and allows each user to have multiple identities. You can find out more from the project's official website at:

➡️ https://jointakahe.org

You can follow the project's account at:

➡️ @takahe

Takahe accounts can be followed from Mastodon, and it works with Mastodon API apps.

You can create polls on Mastodon by clicking the button that looks like a bar chart 📊 when writing a post. Don't forget to set the duration, which can be from 5 mins to 7 days.

There's also a "secret" option on the web interface which lets you allow multiple responses. When creating a poll through your server's website, click on the circles and they'll turn into rounded squares, which means the poll is in multiple response mode.

More info on all of this here: https://fedi.tips/how-to-post-a-poll-on-mastodon

Apparently there is now a genuine "Mastodon For Dummies" book:

➡️ https://www.dummies.com/article/technology/social-media/general-social-media/mastodon-for-dummies-cheat-sheet-297062

It's a real physical book, it's in bookshops and libraries! Depending on where you live, it's out now or out this week.

I haven't read it (yet) but the index seems promising and it even mentions non-Mastodon Fediverse platforms including lesser known ones like @inventaire

(Thanks to @technomancy for highlighting this release!)

A lot of blind people don't use profile pictures. If you see a profile without a picture, that doesn't mean it's a spammer.

If you want to check whether an account is genuine, the best method is to read their profile text and pinned posts.

If you want to transfer your account from one Mastodon server to another, here's a step-by-step guide all about how to do it:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server

It's a bit longer than some guides as it includes transferring followers, follows and mutes/blocks/bookmarks.

If you want to, you can set Mastodon to automatically delete your posts after a certain time period.

  1. Log in through your server's website
  2. Go to ⚙️ Preferences > Automated Post Deletion
  3. Tick box marked "automatically delete old posts" and choose time period after which posts will be deleted
  4. Choose exceptions (which posts to keep even if they are older than the time period)
  5. If you are sure, click "Save changes"

If you change your mind, untick the box and click "Save Changes".

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. If you've had trouble with auto-delete not deleting stuff over the last couple of months, please try deactivating it, waiting a while and then re-activating it later. The unprecedentedly massive surge of new members in October/November/December may have prevented this feature working properly on some servers.

You can filter any Mastodon account's public posts by hashtag using the following website address:

(mastodon profile's web address)/tagged/(hashtag without the #)

So, for example, to see all my public posts with the hashtag "Mastodon" the address would be:

https://mstdn.social/@feditips/tagged/mastodon

:rss: As many have pointed out in comments, you can also add .rss to the end of the address to create an RSS feed.

Mastodon has a built-in official post scheduling system but (for some unexplained reason) you currently need to use a third party interface to access it.

The third party Android app Fedilab includes access to the official scheduling system, and its makers @apps also have a site called FediPlan at https://plan.fedilab.app which should work on any platform.

If you would like an official interface for scheduling, and if you're comfortable using github, give a thumbs up at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/10088

In case you missed it, Mastodon now lets you edit posts 🥳

You can edit any post you've made, and it will send a notification to people who have already interacted with it to prevent any hijinks or shenanigans. It also lets people see the previous versions.

You can access it through your server's website and some third party apps, for example iPhone/iPad app Toot! and Android app Fedilab.

(The official app doesn't yet support it, so it's another good reason to check out third party apps.)

@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

Each server on here has its own custom emoji, which can be still images like :cate: or animations like :rickroll:

To access your server's custom emoji on your phone, use the emoji button within your app (but not the keyboard emoji button, that's just for normal emoji).

If you're on the website, all the emoji are on main emoji picker 😂

If you want a specific custom emoji on your server, ask your server's admin. They can be any PNG or GIF file as long as the size is under 256kb.
