If you want to discover posts and accounts about specific topics, try following hashtags.

When you follow a hashtag, posts with that tag will automatically appear in your main Home feed even if you don't follow the person who posted it. For example, if you follow you will start seeing doggos appear in your main feed.

To follow a hashtag, search for the tag and then click the follow button in the top right corner of the screen.

Fediverse servers tend to have a lot more human moderators than centralised commercial social networks. Here's why:

Staff ratio means the number of human moderators per user.

A typical Fediverse server has about 500-1000 members. Let's assume an average staff ratio of 1:1000.

Facebook has 3 billion members, so in order to get a staff ratio of 1:1000 it would need 3 million moderators. The current total number of employees of any kind at Facebook/Meta is only 77,114.

Do you want to discover nice, responsible Fediverse servers sorted into topics, regions, languages and types?

I run a site called FediGarden which is a curated list of servers that comply with certain standards of moderation and reliability:

➡️ https://fedi.garden

The standards which these servers comply with are listed at https://fedi.garden/about-this-site

The site also has an account that features servers every day at:

➡️ @FediGarden

If you want your server to be listed, contact this account!

@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. Some differences between FediGarden and JoinMastodon:

-Servers with over 50k total users will not be listed

-Both Mastodon and non-Mastodon Fedi servers can be listed (though there are still only a few of these at the moment)

-Lists have an ever-changing randomised order and do not prioritise large servers or servers with immediate signups

-Forks are indicated too, if people want a Glitch or Hometown server for example

-Founding dates are shown

Are you getting notifications about a thread you don't want to take part in any more? You can mute a conversation thread so that you don't get notifications about it any more:

  1. Go to a post in the thread where you are tagged
  2. Click ⋯ and select "Mute conversation"

If you change your mind, click ⋯ within the thread and select "Unmute conversation".

If your app doesn't show this option try logging in through your server's website.

Are you having problems getting your website link to turn green on your Mastodon profile?

Here are some instructions on how to verify your identity, including turning your site link green, and a set of troubleshooting suggestions on what to do if it doesn't work:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account/

The troubleshooting tips are in the lower half of the page, in the section marked "My website address won’t turn green! How do I make it happen?".

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@epw

Yeah, AFAIK the verification happens when you click "save changes" on your profile, so you need to insert the code into your site first and then save your Masto profile.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@BrianKolm

It should work if you have access to the HTML code of your site or service, for example on a WordPress site.

Unfortunately it seems Google Sites won't let people access HTML at all :/

The 🔔 Notifications section on Mastodon has two sections at the top, "Mentions" and "All":

  • If you click on Mentions, it will only show you notifications for replies and posts where you are mentioned.

  • If you click on All, it will show you notifications for everything including favourites, boosts, replies, mentions, edits etc.

(Several people asked why their notifications weren't showing boosts or favourites. It turned out they had accidentally clicked on "Mentions" without noticing it.)

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. As someone pointed out, if you hear Notifications beeps but there's no notification visible, it's likely that you have switched Notifications to "Mentions" but you are still hearing the beeps for favourites, boosts etc.

(Sorry to whoever pointed this out, I would credit you but I've lost the original post)

@adachika192

Yeah, I didn't want to complicate things but if you click the Notifications slider icon on the web interface you can set it to show even more options by selecting "Display all categories". These extra options are available on all servers.

These other options are off by default though. Most people will just see "All" and "Mentions".

When you write hashtags that contain multiple words, make the first letter of each word a capital letter, for example . This will make the tag readable to blind people.

Blind people use the internet through screen reader apps, which read text out aloud. By putting a capital at the start of each word in a hashtag, you are telling the screen reader how to say the tag correctly.

In the non-techy world this is generally known as "CamelCase".

(Techy people may call it PascalCase)

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@TimMaddog

Unfortunately hyphens and underscores don't work in hashtags on the Fediverse, so it's best to stick to CamelCase.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

p.s. Before any programmers chip in, I know that there's "camelCase" in programming, but that doesn't get across that every word should be capitalised.

"CamelCase" is the easiest to remember and clearest in its intent. I know it's not an accurate term in programming, but this post is aimed at non-programmers doing non-programming tasks.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@Mallulady

It's nothing to do with alts.

This is for hashtags in the actual post itself.

So, if you're tagging a post, make sure that the first letter of each word is a capital letter.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@alex_02

That doesn't work with hashtags on the Fediverse, unfortunately.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@supergrobi

Every single time I have posted about this, it has turned into a thread about 1990s programming language conventions 😁

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@ferricoxide

If you just ignore the suggestions it will keep your capitalisations intact.

There was a bug a couple of versions ago where the suggestions autoreplaced capitalisations even if you ignored the suggestion, but that bug was fixed.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@ehashman

Yes, this is a really good point! 👍

I'll add that to the fedi.tips article on this.

And even abled people find capitalised words easier to read in hashtags.

Have you stopped being notified when your posts are boosted or favourited? Or do you wish these notifications would stop?

The Notifications page on Mastodon has two main tabs that set what you're notified about:

-To be notified about favourites and boosts, click "All" at the top of Notifications

-To stop being notified about favourites and boosts, click "Mentions" at the top of Notifications

(By the way, these options are at the top of the Notifications page, not on the Settings page.)

Calckey is a Fediverse server type which includes lots of features that Mastodon doesn't yet have, such as emoji reactions, markdown, customisable interfaces, widgets and lots more.

To see for yourself, have a look on the official website at:

➡️ https://calckey.org

For the latest updates, follow the official account at:

➡️ @calckey

If you want to try signing up, there's a stable server at:

@bgtlover @calckey

It's not a fork of Mastodon, but Calckey and Mastodon accounts can follow each other and interact with each other.

@jcarr @calckey

Give it a bit of time, I think it is being quite slow at the moment! :/

There are other servers too, you can find a listing of them on the website at https://calckey.org/join/

@zyz @calckey

I'm sorry to hear that, hopefully they can fix it? :/
