Radio news this morning: "There was a time change. Radio clocks set themselves automatically, you need to adjust all others manually."

I kid you not. 😳

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@Mehrad the issue is that they felt the need to explain to people that non-radio clocks need to be adjusted. Which says something either about them or about the general populace.

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Frenchies of the , quick question!! πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

What is up with the region of Languedoc-Roussillon and why do I see entire wine estates for the price of a parking spot in Amsterdam for sale?!

@Gina probably listed buildings that require 10 mil Eur for immediate renovation. Also, a new motorway will be built right next to them next year.

There's nothing cheap in southern France. I've looked. πŸ˜€

Hey guys, i have this trouble on my first printing attempt, as you can see in the picture, there is a crack in the right arm and i have no idea why...

image/jpeg

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@dervishe could be caused by flexing. Can you show the model including supports?

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@dervishe ok but when you load it into your slicer does it have supports already in it? How did you print it?

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@dervishe unlikely with the crack being so straight. Is the model hollow and does it have adequate drainage holes to prevent trapping resin inside?

In any event you need a slicer to do anything useful with your printer, so that should be a priority. Chitubox is a decent free slicer. I hear Prusa's is also good but I have no experience with it myself.

This is why you can't trust GPTs right now. This screenshot was over the course of MAYBE 15 minutes. Just for the record, the GPT NEVER had the right answer.

We have junebugs. It's only March. Why do we call them junebugs anyway?

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike @Tay0 over here at least May Beetles and June Bugs are two different species.

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike @Tay0 they are related (same family, different species). This is what ours look like. The June Bug is the brighter one, it's roughly half the size of the May Beetle.

A June Bug.

You know that Sinatra song? That's life
? Sometimes that is the only way you can look at it. My father was taken to intensive care on Thursday afternoon and today my sister was moved to the hospital due to after birth complications. Tuesday I was a happy man holding my nephew in my arms, today two of the people I care most about are in hospital and I can't do a thing. Guess that's life. Still sucks...

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@thewk oh man. Best wishes to both of them, hope things improve soon! 🀞

Super exhausting week so far. Have a family member in the hospital, trying to take care of family matters and shuttle people around that need it.

I was driving home from one such errand feeling so tired I could feel it in my lungs, and then I realized:

Hey, this is how a lot of moms feel EVERY DAY.

Holy crap, guys. Let's show some appreciation.

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane mh not great. I've been there and my personal way of coping is to take it a day at a time.

I caught myself obsessing over things that i was trying to plan days or weeks down the line. But there's no point. Allocate time to help them, plan one next step at a time, and then have your own time off also to recharge. For me that worked best.

Good luck! 🀞 Also, we're here for you should you need it.
@mitch

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane yeah I know the feeling.

Went through this when my mom went into (what essentially turned out to be hospice) care years ago. Complicated by the fact I was the only kid, had to move her and her stuff 500 miles to here, and organizing everything. That was other commuting back and forth every other week for 9 months. Felt like a project manager.

But it was the right thing to do and I wouldn't trade those last few months for anything. πŸ˜₯

It's official, wrote my renounce letter today, so back to the desert caravan of job search again. But I feel fine, as I've shown no other but myself that I could land a job as a programmer and survive the experience. Why I'm leaving is long to tell, but let's just say that I'd still be there if I could just keep on doing web programming projects, but that would have been no longer the case. I'll have my chance again, and if not... I'll just keep on coding, no matter what. :)

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@array best of luck! I'm very sure you'll find something better. 🀞

Alright yall, I'm starting a new job May 1st, so I have the whole month of April to do.. whatever I want? WHAT SHOULD I DO?

I can literally spend the whole day in bed googling European castles, so I need a plan. 😭

@Gina in Spain or back to rainy old Amsterdam?

array, to random
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

I began with programming about 3 years ago, and did an Associate Degree in web programming. If I may say so, I passed with pretty good grades, but 3 months after I landed my first gig, I am more convinced every day that I arrived too late for this. I have an Humanities background, zero Science/Maths in my belt, and I'm just too old for this. It's been a ride, trying to make my way from zero to code monkey at 50. So let's call it a day now that I'm still winning. <3

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@array so you think this is due to your current job? Or would it be the same if you were in a different place?

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@array mh. I keep hearing this type of onboarding horror story. Getting new hires into a productive state will require something like 20% of somebody's time for 3-6 months, minimum. Letting freshmeat fumble through on their own is just irresponsible, no matter how small the team. 😬

Am I the only one finding it comical there is an antitrust case going on against Apple, where the smartphone market is divided 72% Android versus 28% iPhone?

Yet there is no such case against microsoft which according to its own numbers has >80% "market" share on the desktop?
