Starmer warns of ‘difficult choices’ over NHS, tuition fees and two-child benefit cap – UK politics live

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2024/may/24/keir-starmer-rishi-sunak-uk-general-election-2024-labour-conservatives

So that will be Scotland on our own again? Potential Labour voters in Scotland listen and be very afraid.

ferryoons,
@ferryoons@mastodon.scot avatar

@When Wes Streeting has already told us “the door is wide open” for privatising the NHS. And we know what “difficult choices” means. Scotland, be very careful.

"this is why any government in Holyrood is destined not to deliver. It can't, because London created a system that was bound to fail as a way of securing continuous control whilst ensuring that blame would be directed inward in Scotland itself, as might well happen now" -- @RichardJMurphy

@simon_brooke @MadeyeTheCarnaptious @HighlandLawyer @iaruffell @RichardJMurphy Poppycock. I’m not a fan of either of those myself. But if you expect to like, let alone agree with everyone in any political party, you’d better start your own. And then your colleagues will argue with you. And then you’ll have to start another one.

ferryoons,

@simon_brooke @RichardJMurphy Noting that Scotland’s block grant is now the lowest it’s ever been, while the SNP gets the blame for the impact.

@patrickhadfield @rebelrebel62 Where did this “moving to the right” narrative suddenly emerge from, other than a media construct? In terms of social initiatives actually delivered within increasingly tight financial constraints and malicious interference from Westminster, this is the most liberal government I can recall.

While Russia is attacking Western societies asymmetrically in all manner of ways (I just read the news and I know this, so you do as well), government leaders are full on channelling Neville Chamberlain. That went well last time.

Latterly, it’s clear that Russian money has been effectively funding dissenting parties, because there’s always a malleable section of humanity that is easily persuaded to hate. Beautiful and mysterious Rosslyn Chapel south of Edinburgh. What was actually built was only a small part of what its founder intended before his death in 1484, yet it remains a truly remarkable achievement. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/roslin/rosslynchapel/index.html

@simon_brooke “Hester has at least apologised”. But has he really. He did apparently utter the “sorry” word in the general direction of Sunak. But has he apologised directly to Diane Abbott? Or indeed, to the female CEO he was actually targeting when he dragged Abbott into it?

    With supermoominal strength I fought for a foothold and at last I laid my sweet burden on the beach, safe from the wild and cruel sea!
    'I'm afraid my powder's sea-damaged,' she said sadly.

    So this famous UK aid drop into was FOUR TONS. That's one seventh of the load of one articulated truck, or slightly less than two grammes of aid for each person in Gaza. That isn't 'aid', that's theatre: more about avoiding criticism of the UK than about helping anyone on the ground.
