Terrible idea: an author writes a book, but instead of releasing it, they train an LLM on it, and release the model.

So readers can ask the LLM to generate text based on it, but can never know the original text.

Bad idea: you know how sometimes people have a "me but a bot" account? Where they've trained a gpt3 bot on their original posts, and have it regularly generate a fake post by them?

Why stop there? Train another bot on the first bot account's output. And another.

See how many bot accounts it takes until foonebot7 is just posting "floppy floppy floppy floppy floppy floppy" 24/7

@foone@digipres.club avatar

@megamatt if I wanted legible output, I wouldn't be asking an LLM

@DasGanon those people are my enemy anyway. I want to copy every floppy

In 2014, Steve Wozniak woke up in the middle of the night and suddenly thought of a possible improvement on the Apple // design he had until that moment entirely missed https://groups.google.com/g/comp.sys.apple2/c/iiLgD-7INtE

@mcc that's the most woz thing I can imagine. He really does seem like the kind of guy who wakes up realizing he made a mistake 37 years ago in one of his designs

@puppygirlhornypost @mori I wonder if vibrating a hard drive lowers the read speed?

I need to hook up a Hitachi to an old... I was gonna say something like "an old wd caviar" but I just remembered that Hitachi made hard drives too.

So now I need to try using a Hitachi on a Hitachi

@9names @puppygirlhornypost @mori yeah! I used to work for an SSD company, our CTO had a link to that video in his email signature

Not enough people realize that the "Turing Test" as originally presented was "can a gay English man in 1945 tell the difference between a chatbot and a femme-coded woman" over a teletype connection.

(Turing was very gay and had a sex-segregated education and then work life: he basically didn't know women and his alienation is palpable. But today's techbros don't have any such excuse, and the emphasis on femme-coded AI is ... telling.)

@cstross I think it's also important to remember that he came up with it when the number of computers in the world was like, two? He didn't have the massive amount of experience we do with computers pretending to be humans.

i did not realize how fragile "sd card plugged into raspberry pi" is. my headmate's 3d printer server just... had an sd card die. it sort of reads except sometimes it spends half a minute reading a single sector

wtf

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@whitequark I maintained a raspi that did nothing but display one website for about a year, and THE ONLY problem I had was SD cards dying.

the raspi is just so good at killing microsd cards

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@edward @whitequark I didn't know that existed and it's very funny that it does.

It's an emmc with a microsd connector!

That's just microsd with extra steps!

I was copying a Totally Legal Game Backup onto my roommate's switch and it confused Windows so much that it told me I had the wrong floppy diskette in the drive.

@ok_devalias amusingly I was actually working on a cow farm simulator a few years ago, then twitter and unity both exploded out from under us so we canceled it

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

gah. I'm having continual trouble with a modded switch, because you need a microSD card which you copy files onto and they keep getting corrupted.

I corrupted my first SD card by trying to copy a game that was too big and the fat filesystem filling with lost sectors, so I wiped it and started setting it up again. My idea was that I'd set it up and then image the whole SD card!

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

I get the new SD card set up, but before I image it I try copying a single game onto it.

this corrupted the filesystem. See the above error? That was windows deciding the microSD card wasn't formatted anymore

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@KayOhtie good question. I was following the guide which had me format it from the TegraExplorer payload, and I'm not sure how it formatted it.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@KayOhtie I went back in: turns out it does fat32

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

Using Awoo-Installer's network mode to avoid having to copy a bunch of files on and off of the SD card seems to have kept it from instantly corrupting itself.

So now I'm backing up the SD card as a dd-image. I can just re-image it or stick it on a second card if something goes wrong

I wonder if you could clone a FlashPath floppy disk emulator but as a PCB.
Youd need a hole in the middle for the spindle, but if you could keep the height down and do some magnetic coils at the right place, it could work?

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@txgx42 now that's a fun idea.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@greenarchist nah you just leave the hole in the middle, big enough that the motor spins nothing
