So I got this thing at ewaste.

It's a Richtech Automated "AI" Temperature Screening System.

Time to open it up.

This thing has a lot of small PCBs. I think they prototyped this thing FAST rather than trying to cut down on the cost.

So this is probably from early in the pandemic.

One module is just a camera.
It's built around a Sony STARVIS IMX327. Full HD (2 Megapixel) fixed-focus, MIPI output.

This is basically just your standard raspi camera

This SR602 module is an infrared motion detector

The real reason HD-DVD failed is because it used Javascript for interactivity

Idea: the Doom Army Knife.
It's an arm SBC with multiple types of lvds output and parallel RGB, plus a bunch of GPIO for inputs.

The idea is that it's designed for splicing into a devices existing screen and buttons, and producing a Doom-playing device

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

it might end up just being a raspi + a daughterboard. some video adapters and power regulators and optocouplers.

OH: "usb cable shibari would be incredibly impressive" "[insert joke about how interaction with usb is already a form of shibari here]"

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@whitequark I've said for years, it'd be hilarious to tie someone up with computer cables of some kind (usb, ethernet, serial) and then use those cables to transmit bdsm porn.

It'd be like being tied up by the internet itself

The original 1987 ShareData release of Jeopardy for the Apple II had this clue, in the category Fictional Captains: "He sat at the helm of the Starship Enterprise", with the correct answer being "Captain Kirk"

When the game was re-released under the GameTek brand in 1990, it had been been updated to accept either Kirk or Picard.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@txgx42 if it's the guy at the helm, shouldn't that be Sulu?

I just saw a job listing for a company doing "home defense using AI and non-lethal deterrence"

The company's name? Sauron.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

come on, think about your name just a little, people.

also, even if you don't, think about IF YOU CAN GOOGLE IT

foone, (edited )
@foone@digipres.club avatar

another listing is from a company that says they provide "ambient medical documentation" and I'm really tempted to apply just to find out what the fuck they mean by that

all the straight dudes in all the online spaces I inhabit are aggressively horny yet I'm the one who's always worried I'm going to be judged for being a woman in the kink community

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@cyborgurl they've got implicit permission to be horny. Trans femmes need explicit permission or they might get arrested by the Sex Police

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@cyborgurl yeah! the sex police have the fuzzy handcuffs and "you've been a bad girl" but the discord judging just has that meme of all the girls at a party staring at you

I want a macropad keyboard that's also kind-of a watch. Like, it's a macropad, but you wear it on your wrist/arm.

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@scrottie basically, but no glove part. Just the wrist part

foone,

@serapath nah. Those came up a lot when I looked for wearable keyboards. I want a keyboard that doesn't get in the way of my fingers

I’m going to make some coffee, and crack open the 1541 that I’d rediscovered at the beginning of the year, so I can make another set of measurements of the head resistance.

Words alone cannot express how exciting the prospect of getting the otherwise blown-out read heads to work again is. 🔥🧨🎆🎇

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@artandtechnic I can loan you a working 5.25“ drive or a 1541 (I have several, I think at least one works) if that would help

I love that some time ago I basically infected my coworkers' minds with this and the message worked: when they're about to do something dangerous they step back and think of "shake hands with danger" and that guitar riff. then they burst out laughing.

North Carolina child’s ‘monster in the closet’ was in fact 50,000 bees in the wall

Family discovers ‘terrifying’ gigantic bee colony in wall of home with blood-like honey oozing down wall and $20,000 in damage

(Beekeepers ultimately removed tens of thousands of bees over several extractions, and a honeycomb weighing more than 100lb.)

Does anyone know if there were alternative character generator ROMs available for the IBM MDA/Hercules adapter?
I have a Paradise Color/Mono Card [1] with a socketed 27C64, it'd be fun to have some switch-selectable alternative fonts.

1: https://www.dosdays.co.uk/topics/Manufacturers/paradise/color_mono_card.php

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@philpem I wrote some software to generate new ROMs for it, so you can put new fonts in it if you burn your own eeprom.

https://github.com/foone/mdafont

foone,
@foone@digipres.club avatar

@philpem it's the kind of thing where I'm sure SOMEONE had to have done it, especially given how easy it would be to just swap in a different mask rom, but I'm not aware of anyone who did it back in the day
