I'm working on a tool for understanding obstacles 🚧 and overcoming them in a way that feels easy, friendly and safe. This is my work diary. Feel free to reach out with questions, feedback, ideas. 💁‍♀️

🇬🇧 Most of my posts are in English, but there's some in German, too.

It's not just me, right?

It is my very firm belief that some of the issues with stem from your brain not liking the way things are commonly meant to be done.

It is also my firm belief that it is possible to adapt the systems so they work for you instead of needing to adapt yourself to the systems (and often fail).

I want to make my case today about to-do lists.

To-do lists are just the way how you manage to get shit done, right? You put it on a list and work through it. Easy enough 😬

Well, I can show you how this works for me. Let’s go through today’s to-do list? See below! I’ve idled away very much time of my life because of this.

These linear lists don’t work for my brain. but I want to show you what works for me. It isn’t extraordinary, maybe it’s also silly to post about it. It’s a bit more messy and takes more time writing it out. But to me it makes all the difference and maybe someone out there who needs this, too.

I build to-do webs in this way:

  1. I’ll take each task from the to-do list and break it down into the subtasks needed to get it done. (if you find this step difficult maybe https://goblin.tools by @chton can help)
  2. I put each of the subtasks inside a bubble and connect them with arrows in a logical order.
  3. I look for connections between different tasks. In this example: I want to clean before I shower before I go out. The arrows indicate this.

(3/5)

gettingunstuck,
@gettingunstuck@mastodon.social avatar

So, now I have:

  • a clear order how to proceed + no need to fuss about later things
  • but also room to wiggle: there’s several different starting points to choose from, it’s any of the bubbles that don’t have an incoming arrow on them
  • a lower threshold for beginning the tasks I don’t like

So, maybe I don’t feel like cleaning the bathroom. But I could maybe start making a shopping list, then clean the sink, then switch to sorting the laundry then come back to cleaning the rest.

@gettingunstuck@mastodon.social avatar

If I don’t do this I just stop when I get confused what to do next. I’m just having a hard time juggling all the different strands in my mind.

With this web I’ve got a lighter mental load and I find myself moving into execution far easier. Don’t really know how to explain it, but I just do way more things with less friction.

I'm often stuck because something feels off inside but I can't name or address it. That's why I'm building a framework to help understanding and gently changing your inner states. Here's a first draft for differentiating the levels of emotional arousal.

This helps me knowing myself better. I'm often superficially calm but not quite okay. Turns out that there's often some emotions that have gone from red to blue because I couldn't deal with them. Buried, but still interfering. Can anyone relate?

Do you ever feel like the way you use your digital devices is getting a bit out of hand? Like you're spending more time in front of a screen than you would actually want to? Or it just doesn't feel healthy? I sure do sometimes, so I'd be interested in what do you do limit your media use. Do you rely on self-control? Do you use other routines or preventative measures?

Some discernment I needed today:
A. I am ready to discuss a specific boundary if someone disagrees with it. I might be missing the mark and could reconsider where exactly I draw the line.
B. I am not ready to discuss whether I'm allowed to have boundaries at all. I do have that right. End of the story. Nothing to talk about here.

I haven't gotten out much lately. The cold I had in February had left me rather weak and I wanted to take time to fully recover. I could take some walks lately but whenever I tried running I felt my chest tighten. Today I tried biking and it worked surprisingly well. I got 30 km under my belt, slowly though, but I'm so proud.

I was sleepily opening the window at 6 this morning only to find four deer walking down my street 😍 The first three hurried away but the last one looked at me and lingered a bit. I just love these tiny magical moments so much.

🚨 This is your friendly nudge to go out and look for early signs of spring today (you know, if you're in the higher latitudes of the Northern hemisphere). It was the best and most life-giving thing I've done today. Look how pretty these flowers are - and their smell was divine, too.

Me thinking: I don't consider myself a perfectionist, I just have a hard time finishing any project because I think the work I'm doing is just not yet good enough.

Me typing out that sentence: 🤦‍♀️

Let's generate some love, warmth, support and connection, shall we? Will you answer these questions for me? I'll go first.

❤️ 1. What's one kind thing someone did for you this week?

❤️ 2. What is one thing you could do to pay it forward in the week ahead?

gettingunstuck,
@gettingunstuck@mastodon.social avatar
  1. My partner supported me through the stresses and bad moods of being sick this week by checking in often and taking a lot of time to listen with lots of empathy.

  2. I'll actively watch out for opportunities to show them my appreciation this week. Mostly in words probably, but maybe it's also time for sending a little surprise present 🤔

Calling on all the people running their own businesses or who have done that in the past:

What is one thing that you would have wanted to know before you started?

I don't feel great about but after reading Wintering by Katherine May last year I made an effort to improve our relationship. Thought this might be helpful for you as well.

Would any of you be interested in talking to me for 30-60 min about how and why you feel stuck with a task or just life in general?

My aim is to create tools to help people move forward because it's something I feel passionate about. I know many of my own intricacies but I want to better understand other people's challenges and needs. Let's also note that I'd love to create an income around this bc the corporate world and I aren't a great fit

Thanks.

Currently dipping my toes into a lot of things I have little to no experience in. Like developing a little web app for helping people figure out possible reasons why they're stuck. Next up: figuring out how to get this online.

@schizanon @enhance_dev bookmarked! This seems intriguing, thanks so much for sharing!

Hi everyone, would you be so kind and share some things that help you move forward if you feel stuck? It could be an idea, an app, an image, a song, an action or whatever else gets you moving.

Don't hesitate to share things that seem too easy or trivial to you. They might be the biggest aha-moment for someone else.

If you find this helpful, please consider boosting for wider reach.
