@Gazimoff whoa! I'd so wished that game would have been some sorta single-player game.

I really enjoyed the cartoony art direction of it but couldn't be bothered getting into a MMO.

@chris also something I forget: you might enable notifications for the accounts you're interested in not missing posts from (if you don't already)

super useful for when people are posting more from different timezones

Nintendo's biz & legal divisions basically don't want you sharing or handling their creative divisions' work in any capacity it seems like.

I wonder how much, if any, backlash their creatives are giving them internally over these actions. If I were them I'd be frustrated at how much they're stifling the discussion and enjoyment of my work, but that's just me.

There's some speculation in the comments of the Garry's Mod news post that this may be a fake takedown request for Nintendo stuff.

Whether it is or not, the fact that it even appears slightly credible is a result of Nintendo's aggressive behavior.

Also for what it's worth, Sony and Microsoft aren't much better about this kind of thing.

They both don't want you to have much say over your games after you buy them. However they haven't been as aggressive with takedown notices...Yet.

What kinds of games might you recommend with deep worldbuilding and interaction that aren't RPGs?

I like worldbuilding and stories, and I like when they're mixed with the interactivity of games, so RPGs seem like they should be a natural fit. Problem is, I dislike the stat-heavy, grindy progression of many RPGs.

I enjoy point & click adventures and visual novels but they're often more limited in their interactions. What kinds of game might I be missing combining the two?

Yeah sorry, I ran into limits from where I'm posting (Mastodon).

Some reference points might be like Outer Wilds (nice mix of story & interaction) and going back a bit, games like Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Mega Man Legends.

Each have a certain sense of place and an enjoyable degree of interaction in terms of either roaming around or trying to figure out how to get around.

@Donjuanme Yeah, you're not wrong. The trick is, "games these days", which I enjoy a fair amount of, but I'm also interested in games from across time, so older titles as well.

Those are a little iffier to play given some lack the settings or options, and sometimes also any cheats. Do you happen to know of any sites/resources advising how to use emulators to sorta do that for older titles?

Alternatively may need to review which old titles I have that have cheats for that kinda thing...

I have, a little, and have enjoyed those I've played, but I'm also fond of more visual art in games, so on the text heavy front I lean towards point and click adventures and visual novels more.

However like yourself, I tend to think I should play more of them, see what they experiment with and push boundaries on.

Btw you might check out Trackless if you like interactive fiction. It mixes some light text parsing with a 3D adventure game, making for a unique experience.

I did enjoy Control! It was one of the last few big budget games from the past few years that I've really enjoyed.

Although it could have played around with the powers more, for sure, and the setting was very constrained. Still, at least it had that element of the strange to it.

So I should note here that I also kinda enjoyed Death Stranding (as another of the few big budget titles I enjoyed), but it's not really inspired many other games yet to make a distinct kind.

These are solid suggestions for sure! I still need to get around to the rest of the Dishonored series past the first and finish Prey.

Immersive sims I think are pretty close to what I might be wanting, but they're unfortunately not that common, and some have RPG elements I don't find enjoyable. The Arkane games you mention pretty much avoid them last I checked though, and I dig'em for it

I think I may have it wishlisted, so I'm definitely trying to keep an eye on it. Waiting till it's fully released so I don't feel compelled to play it more like pseudo-QA and enjoy it less though

I mean RPG largely in the traditional sense you mention, yeah. The mixture of stat management and level/power progression, which are often (albeit not always) accompanied with some amount of grinding to proceed in the story.

Like I enjoyed NieR: Automata despite the RPG elements, but also in large part because as I recall, they heavily reduced the amount to which you had to deal with them. Tbh I'm not sure why they kept those they did given how negligible they were.

Right, as I mention though, from what I recall they didn't always have cheats, or necessarily the sort I might want like removing random battles for the games with them.

I use Steam, but I also go for games outside of Steam, which is what my message was indicating. I'm into first/third-person puzzle games, for sure.

Not much of a fan of Bethesda's style of RPGs (given you asked in another comment). They're too buggy/unstable in my experience, but also plainly RPGs.

Call it nostalgia, but the moment video games on consoles couldn't launch and be played as quickly as the machine could load them, they went astray.

Consoles were pretty much always proprietary computers, but the tradeoff was that they were dedicated to playing games, removing complexities to get you to playing ASAP.

Adding in online updates and license checks, and subscriptions for online play? You're getting closer to being any other device, or worse.

Plus it does well to remember that part of how Nintendo brought back the console market from its downturn was its seal of quality across games for its system.

With online updates even on console games, any sort of quality assurance for being on a console might as well be tossed out. That undercuts what could still be a big selling point for consoles.

Classic convenience plus games Just Working™. But money and its momentum don't care about that.

As much as I understand it mainly comes down to different preferences, I still find it difficult to understand what's involved in enjoying leveling progression systems in some games.

I wouldn't dwell on it so much except that it appears in so many games, and increasingly so. Plus my experiences with them have mostly been of frustration as they, ironically, halt my progression in various games.

Why would I want to stop following the story & exploring the world to do busywork?

Online scifi space game Starbase resumes development after an extended pause!

For those unfamiliar, Starbase is an ambitious in-development online multiplayer game that has a mixture of first-person on-foot, and vehicular gameplay, with the ability to build ships and stations.

Awhile back its development was paused as the studio had to focus their resources on a different game, but now they're back to working on Starbase.

Last repost is of music from a defunct(?) Half-Life 2 mod called Neotokyo. It was a multiplayer shooter mod that drew heavily from cyberpunk aesthetics, specifically from Japanese cyberpunk aesthetics as seen in anime like Ghost in the Shell.

It had a notable level of aesthetic quality to it that set it apart when it came out, & honestly I'd love to read more on how the team coordinated it all.

I say aesthetic quality not to knock the gameplay, but only because I never played enough of it to get a good sense of it.

I just know like many multiplayer shooters, I tended to suck at it and didn't know others to play with to make that more tolerable.
