Reminder that the city of #ottawa likes to unilaterally decide when summer starts and ends. Has Britannia Beach been packed for weeks already? Did a 9-yr old just die? Yes. Will this change the city’s approach to funding how the city operates in an era where it’s much warmer for longer? No probably not. The speakers mentioning no lifeguards are on duty are like speed signs. Meh, that’s enough #ontario#onpoli https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/britannia-beach-dead-child-june-2024-1.7222570
Biked by Britannia Beach today with 2 fire trucks, 5 cop cars and 3 paramedic vehicles all lights and sirens blaring. Apparently a neighbourhood kid is in critical condition after presumably being found unresponsive in the water. Fuck I hate this. It’s so common and yet so easy to avoid and I’ll stake my claim that the beach is one area where phones should just be banned. It takes no time for shit like this to happen with aspirated water in the lungs #ottawa#drowning#kids
This isn’t a shit on other parents / holier than thou from me. I’ve sat at the beach. I’ve watched others for a long time at the beach. And I’ve used my phone while sitting at the beach, though our kid doesn’t swim there. 30 secs isn’t that long. What’s 45 seconds right? It’s like driving and using a cellphone. I’ve done it and now I don’t. Ever. Driving or at a beach with the kid. Shit happens so fast #ottawa#kids#drowning
Nothing radicalized me more than living without a car. I firmly believe it’s a literal and metaphorical vehicle for the future. It opens you up to your community. It can make you feel joy when there are many days right now where it’s conflicting to feel joy.
I think more people should become radicalized. Life is a lot different, a lot better, change is scary and every fucking minute of it is worth it #ottawa#ottbike#biketooter#worldbikeday
PSA: (and a question). #ottawa and #ontario pulled two ticks off the kid after a hike in Gatineau park. And you NEED to check all of the little ones, especially parts of genitalia you can’t just visibly check. Both of these dots are ticks but unsure what kind. Does anyone know if there is a drop off location to get these tested? Lymes disease is shit and the risk increases a LOT after 24-36 hrs attached #kids#ticks
Long pants and long sleeve shirts are de rigueur for any hike in ‘wild-ish’ areas of eastern Ontario and western Quebec now because of ticks and Lyme disease.
Recommendation is to tuck one’s pant leg into socks. That is a level of dorkiness I am not ready to descend to.
BTW, the prophylactic antibiotic for Lyme is available without prescription in Quebec pharmacies. It’s a bit nasty.
Oh, and there is a vaccine for Lyme. It is not manufactured because of anti-vaxxers!
Hey #ottawa OC Transpo announced this morning that you can now pay for #publictransit with an Interac Debit Card. This is in addition to being able to pay with a credit card or mobile pay on any bus or LRT station #ontario#onpoli
It makes sense that Ford would call an election because there is no opposition, voter turnout out would probably be the same as last time, the PCs have been using our $$$ non-stop the past few months to highlight their successes and because if PP wins, well there is historical precedent that shows the province would dump his provincial affiliation to the federal #ontario#ottawa#onpoli#cdnpolihttps://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/alcohol-sales-convenience-stores-ontario-1.7213546
@grivettcarnac@gemelliz He should do it before 2025, when the 10-year deal with the big breweries would have expired and he could have saved $600M. A somewhat major talking point in debates (if the Cons bother to show up for any, that is).
It makes sense, I don't really like any of options. Our options are:
Doug Ford
Bonnie Crombie, who isn't going to be better.
Marit Stiles, who is giving narcissistic vibes, see the picture below which is the first picture on the Ontario NDP's website.
Mike Schreiner, supports Lecce's stupid war on students.
I don't want to vote in the election, but probably will. I don't think most voters like me will vote though.
It’s the kids birthday this week, it’s almost June and we’re all sick again. The kid’s had the “cough at night that doesn’t go away” for weeks and my throat and lungs hurt as they haven’t in a long time. Tests are negative for days and fuck I hate kindergarten sometimes. We haven’t changed a lot of our behaviors but the amount of kids hacking away at his school the past few weeks is sad frankly #ottawa#kids#covid
First time on the Byron Ave remodel(ish). The dump outs are shit but nice sections. Going to watch the 10k #ottawaraceweekend at Dows Lake where they turn up towards Bronson Ave to cross the bridge in case anyone else in #ottawa is watching. Big bike is hard to miss and the kid is asleep inside #ottbike#biketootet
So the NCC doesn’t seem to have posted on their website that the bike weekend closures are NOT running this weekend, so FYI for those of you who do not follow them on Twitter or instagram 🙃 Met some folks at the park who were riding on the parkway after 8 AM with kids who had to get the fuck off quickly when people ended up driving behind them #ottawa#ottwalk#ottbike
@grivettcarnac holy shit. why is the world like this? i’ve sent so many people biking on the parkways this weekend due to NCC bike days, what the heck??
@grivettcarnac I hate that they're closing the parkways to people because of race weekend. Wouldn't this be an opportunity to embrace the spirit of the event by "providing space for people of all ages and abilities to run their own races across the region" or some similar commspeak.
Chatted with a pharmacist this week about #covid boosters and they can only give them to folks over 65 and immunocompromised… unsure what kind of documentation that requires but province won’t pay for anything other… all the while movie industry folks I follow on social media show that everyone (actors don’t but everyone around them do) on movie sets still have to mask or they lose insurance coverage. So curious why #ottawa#cdnpoli#onpoli
Eligible individuals may receive an XBB COVID-19 vaccine in Spring 2024 if it has been 6 months from the previous COVID-19 vaccine dose or known SARS-CoV-2 infection (whichever is later).
https://www.ontario.ca/page/covid-19-vaccines> Eligible individuals may receive a COVID-19 vaccine if it has been six months since their previous dose or confirmed COVID-19 infection.
So from what I'm reading (and I'm due to get my booster in June), boosters are still every six months, regardless of whatever they're telling you.
Either the pharmacist is misinformed, the pharmacy has some really restrictive rules or both the City and the province are wrong.
@grivettcarnac If you go through the Ontario booking site, it should tell you if you are eligible based on their records of your history. If they say you are good to go, you are and the pharmacy is wrong.
I do not love that a lot of the same driving mentality permeates how people move around on crowded MUPs in #ottawa If you were in the group of bros loudly ringing your bells in unison to get people walking to move right off the path so you all could blast through the middle so fast I could almost feel you on my left shoulder, well I’ll tell you to fuck off in person when you’re stopped next time too. Slow the hell down and wait a singular minute once in a while #ottbike#biketooter
@grivettcarnac Blows my mind how many cyclists execute what I'd consider a dangerous pass on the paths.
I ring my bell when I'm passing pedestrians so they know I'm there (you can check my YT ride videos). I also will slow down to a crawl rather than pass between two pedestrians. It’s not hard.
@human3500@grivettcarnac 👍🏻 My bell is a pleasant "ding”, and I believe it is better at communicating my intention than me talking. The noise cancellation on my airpods lets bells through, which is handy.
