Weโ€™ve put roughly 4,800 kms on two e-bikes in just over a year. ~2,800 on the Yuba (no riding Dec-March) since end of April last year and 2,000 kms on our Load4 75 Reise & Muller since the end of August, 2023. Weโ€™ve had lots of bus trips and Iโ€™m averaging only 9 kms of walking a day. Living without a car can be very fucking frustrating and limiting in a city like but I wouldnโ€™t trade it for anything

sortius,
@sortius@mastodon.social avatar

@grivettcarnac I did trade my cargo bike(s) for inner city living, and while I do miss them a bit, no regrets. The main reason is the trams here in Melbourne; without them I'm not sure I'd feel the same. I'll probably end up getting a new cargo bike, just to have it, soon enough. ๐Ÿ˜†

Still, 4800km is quite insane. Even in the suburbs I was doing maybe 1500km a year. Nice work

Pretty high CAPE for this afternoon. Models don't seem to develop it into thunderstorms, they prefer the western portion that will pass in the late evening.

EC forecasting possibility of storms all day, which seems prudent.

johnefrancis,
@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

a couple of storms have popped up in Eastern Ontario, way ahead of the main line, which is still near Barrie. These will pass to the NW of Ottawa, but anything popping up a bit further south will go thru Ottawa.

@johnefrancis@mastodon.social avatar

a few little storms in the gap between Renfrew & Kingston, but haven't been growing yet. Roasting hot, humid, windy in Ottawa.

Israelโ€™s military is tipping off far-right settler terrorists to the location of aid trucks delivering vital supplies to Gaza to block delivery.

This. Is. A. War. Crime.

Israel is claiming โ€œHamasโ€ is diverting aid. That is a claim all relief agencies reject. US officials also state Israel has offered no evidence to support allegations that Hamas is diverting aid.

Imagine being more upset at ICC for prosecuting this than at the famine its enabling: https://t.co/t9umHxFsUQ

Bicycling grew more in Chicago than in any other major American city in the last five years

"According to an analysis sponsored by CDOT, bicycling has grown more in Chicago than in any other major American city in the last five years. The study showed a 119% increase in biking between fall 2019 and spring 2023, marking the largest jump among the countryโ€™s 10 largest cities."

Do not confuse welfare with Universal Basic Income. If you get $1k in welfare does it make sense to take a $1k job, lose your welfare and end up with the same $1k? No.

If you get $1k UBI, does it make sense to take a $1k job and end up with $2k? Yes.

This is why so many pilots show increases in work.

If you live in Alberta I have two questions for you:

Q1: In recent months, how easy or difficult has it been for you to meet your monthly expenses?

Q2: Would you be willing to speak with me about that for a story I'm working on for CBC News?

Please reply and/or DM!

FINALLY! @TheWarOnCars episode based on the Winter Cycling Congress 2024 is out:
"Winter Cycling in Oil Country":
An unlikely cycling revolution is happening in #Edmonton, Alberta. Despite freezing temps, sprawl, an economy built on tar sands, this #Canadian city is in the midst of a 4-year, C$100M investment in active transportation that will connect the city with a network of high-quality, protected bike lanes.

Hear from the folks doing it"

I canโ€™t help but notice the parallels between my generation of techies thinking copyright was bad when it came to music, movies and apps which should all be free and todayโ€™s techies who feel that way about IP used to train LLMs.

What changed is that streaming and ad supported apps became more convenient than piracy.

I wonder if thereโ€™s a similar analog to say cloning an actorโ€™s voice being more convenient to do while respecting copyright versus illicitly.

In Australia it's all done by volunteers, my parter did for 5 months and had to take time off work to do it in our mega fires of 19/20. I supported her but there are still bills to pay, mortgages, rent etc so it's mostly often run by aged pensioners and a few really commitedd individual. She received a certificate and cap.

Yes, we're stupid and its unsustainable. It's based on a system that worked 70 years ago but is not a suitable model for todays climate changed world, back then a few farmers banded together to fight fires locally.
