People like to yell at me that the center-left are not my enemy and yeah, mostly, probably, but that doesn't necessarily make them useful allies either and there's a lot of wolves in sheep's clothing.

I have colorful things to say about everyone in the political spectrum. I'm not singling you out and it just starts to smack of "hit dogs holler" after a point.

It won't matter to dedicated anti-trans activists but the history of trans healthcare is something I wish more cis people understood.

One party hidebound by rules and norms and decorum its opponents are not expected to abide by steadily degrades the rule of law and the popular legitimacy of politics and government -- which is exactly what fascists want.

The fascists will exempt themselves from whatever laws they don't like and establish fiefdoms where their control cannot be contested either internally by elections or by an outside federal authority. They cannibalize the country until they control everything.

The leadership, donors, and consultant class of the national Democratic Party see themselves as part of a white ruling elite with Republicans and the centrist "intelligentsia," and they don't care about social or economic progress for anyone outside that group and a halo of white middle class center-right voters except as absolutely necessary for social stability.

They're still better than Republicans, who would murder half of us given the chance, but that's not saying much.

People don't really care if "the economy" is healthy if they personally can't afford rent and groceries, and telling them to feel otherwise is just a way of reminding them they don't matter to the people in charge.

People on Bluesky have been bulk posting invite codes on "X," apparently trying to boost their follower numbers to more Twitter-like levels, but the codes have been snatched up by bots and now there's an influx of trolls and Neo-Nazi accounts. 🙄

The US bombed the fuck out of Afghanistan, propped up a corrupt government and warlords, oversaw a collapse of infrastructure and public services and most of the country pushed into poverty, and then it acted surprised the Taliban still had a steady stream of recruits.

There comes a point where your approach to "peace" needs to be more nuanced than "kill 'em all."

It's hard to describe what it felt like as a very young but self-aware trans girl, particularly as that experience is filtered through the shame, confusion, fear, and anxiety that accreted around it.

I didn't even have a sense of myself as a gendered being at first. I was just this chubby-cheeked little blonde child. Several times my mother was told she had a very pretty, very sweet, very well-behaved daughter.

It felt nice.

She hated it and she "corrected" them, quite forcefully.

The turning point for trans rights in America seems to have been the belief, widely held among cis people, that it became "too easy" to transition, which fueled the moral panic about ROGD and the "trans fad," which drove people to reject the existence of trans kids altogether to remove any cognitive dissonance about hurting children and perpetrating genocide against a small and extremely vulnerable group.

"Hamas bad" is not the blank check some people want it to be for bombing schools, hospitals, ambulances, refugee camps, and random people's homes.

"There might be a Hamas terrorist commander in there!" Okay. Send people in to get him. That's what troops and security forces are for.

You don't just fucking bomb hundreds of people and call it even.

"We're combating disinformation online!"

By ensuring social media companies are controlled by right-wing American billionaires who are not beholden to any rules and really like Russian and other disinformation campaigns?

That's an interesting argument.

One of the most depressing things about politics is the number of people who have been conditioned to accept something as true just because it's on "the news" in whatever form.

Even a lot of supposedly smart people are suckers for propaganda if it comes from a source they hold in high esteem (for no apparent reason) like the New York Times.

Increasingly, 2024 feels like a white solidarity election where if you're a poor or marginalized person, you get to choose which version of the white elite you have to struggle under: the open fascism and threat of violence of Trump and Republicans or the patronizing neglect and puritanical meddling of Biden and Democrats, who keep pushing anti-LGBT+ legislation like KOSA.

Democrats are reliably liberal on issues affecting straight white middle class families, especially in blue states, with "middle class" constantly revised upwards; moderate to conservative on policy affecting the wealthy and corporations; reliably conservative on anything that might benefit the young and the poor; indifferent to hostile toward marginalized groups, and willfully incompetent about technology and the Internet.

The US government's entire beef with TikTok is they believe it's spying on Americans for the sake of the Chinese government, as opposed to American social media companies who spy on Americans for the sake of local, state, and federal law enforcement and various intelligence agencies and literally anyone else who is willing to pay for that data.

Which is why they want TikTok sold to an American company willing to hand that data over to them instead of instituting actual privacy regulations.

One of the fun things about this era is how everyone wants to scold you about how government is supposed to work, civics 101 style, when it clearly doesn't work at all, let alone as described.

Jennifer sighed. "There's another Earth?"

"Yeah. It's where we ended up after the Harbinger. We tried to explain but you were kinda loopy going in the cocoon. You kept singing that song about Brad the Drunken Fish."

Jennifer guffawed disbelievingly.

"Emma kept trying to come up with a drum riff for it," Travis added.

"I don't remember that."

"That's good."

I dreamed I got recruited by the Hank Scorpio of private military contractors, who recruited mostly from the poor and marginalized communities. The pay was $70/hour for training plus full benefits. I was in the top of women athletically so got picked for physical and combat training. I was still a writer in this universe, apparently, and a man introduced me to a fan of one of my books.

There's an old narrative tension in the trans community between late-transitioning former "eggs" and trans kids and others who "always knew."

It's mostly harmless and most agree trans people should be supported and access care as early as possible (or desired).

But there has been a tug-of-war over whose narrative is the most representative.

"Always knew" has been treated as something of a cliche created for cis people's benefit, along with metaphors often used by people who "always knew."

Upon finding out 99% of NYU protesters were indeed students, Republican Councilwoman Vickie Paladino decided they all have to die.

It feels like Democrats should stop helping these people in their war on students and higher education?
