JFK airport is a completely shit show today because of the rain? I waited at the tarmac for over an hour after we landed.

I had to sprint out of there when we finally got a gate to deplane. I ran through baggage claim, customs and boarder protection, TSA pre-check, re-check my bags, then took a tram to my terminal and gate.

And the workers here are slower than the DMV. LOL.

I’m finally on the plane though. Sweaty as hell. But on my way home to Portland. Siiiiiigh.

henryhenderson,
@henryhenderson@mastodon.social avatar

@marioguzman Rain or shine, I often sit on the tarmac every time I land or take off from JFK. I always assumed they built it into the flight time since it’s so common.

What is the best way to water your houseplants when away from for 2 weeks?

The glass ball things have never worked well for me.

I backed Altifarm's Cura system on Kickstarter 2 years ago and still haven't received it. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hrbstn/cura-led-grow-light-for-indoor-plants/description

I am considering 2 options, but don't have any anecdata on them:

O'Drip system: https://www.smartasaker.com/en/automatic-watering-system

Hozelock ceremic cones: https://www.smartasaker.com/en/holiday-watering-cones-

@Jeremiah WetPot is Swedish (manufactured in Portugal) which will slow water the plants. They’re a little pricey but I had a few and liked them.

Founded today, 1994: Mosaic Communications Corporation. You're probably more familiar with their second name, though: Netscape. My first glimpse of the web in 1995.

I was fascinated by that animated N icon. It got to me the way work by Dali and Magritte did: eerie, surreal, kind of haunting, with the glowing horizon and flying meteors during pageload. (90s internet meant seeing those meteors a lot).

Here's to yesterday's UI design, and yesterday's web.

@csilverman After learning about them, my mind was always blown that Mozilla came to be from a portmanteau of “Mosaic” and “killer”

macOS and iOS are not accommodating of people living bilingual existences.

I type in Svenglish (Swedish & English). I quickly can access the extra letters of the svenska alphabet from the US English keyboard, but spellcheck, swipe, and autocomplete only work in one language at a time.

The new groceries "smart" list in Reminders categorized “vitvins vinäger” as “Wine, Beer & Spirits” instead of “Oils & Dressings” like when I typed “white wine vinegar”.

henryhenderson,
@henryhenderson@mastodon.social avatar

@Jeremiah They actually did this in iOS 10, but only supported big languages, called it a day and never added support for any more… I too have been eagerly hoping they’d add Swedish but year by year go by…

Beginning in November, people aged 18–49 years who are not in a high-risk group will be able to get the updated COVID-19 vaccine in Sverige if they want it.

Sverige, once again, is being stupid for not recommending a booster for everyone. “It will be like the flu eventually,” they said. Ok, so why is the equivalent of a seasonal flu shot being recommended?

Jeremiah, to Stockholm
@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

My family is visiting Stockholm in a few weeks. I was planning to use Stockholm eBikes for them since I don't have spare bikes.

Then I learned Stockholms stad terminated the contract in May. https://osqledaren.se/ol-graever/wait-where-did-stockholm-ebikes-go-2023-05-23

Then I learned RideMovi is its replacement vendor, but it doesn't have nearly as many bikes, as good a day pass plan, or as good service area. 🙁 https://cykla.stockholm/hyrcyklar/

Any other e-bike rental recommendations in Stockholm?

henryhenderson,
@henryhenderson@mastodon.social avatar

@Jeremiah Bolt and TIER used to have eBikes, but they left the city due to being unable to compete with Stockholm's extremely cheap offer. Then Stockholm withdrew entirely in May… I still haven't received word if I am going to get a refund or credit for my annual pass I bought 2 weeks before the shutdown, lol.

Nice to learn RideMovi may fill that void. Not used them before, but their bikes look nice.

It's been rather frustrating having consistent offerings in Stockholm.

henryhenderson,
@henryhenderson@mastodon.social avatar

@Jeremiah It's worth noting that the Stockholm eBike experience was pretty awful… The app always incorrectly showed the amount of bikes available at a station, and often half of them were unresponsive to unlocking, or just dead. Basically the stations were graveyards of these bikes.

The working ones were also hoarded by food delivery people, so getting one that didn't have physical damage, a charge, and unlocked was a real challenge…

I personally found it a very frustrating experience to use.

@arstechnica while this is exciting news and a testament to Linux, Proton, Steam Deck, etc., I hope macOS doesn’t stay that way… I really hope the new Game Porting Toolkit results in more developers publishing on Mac.

… and/or supporting Vulkan or letting devs use their D3DMetal translation layer 🙃.

I hate that the US uses face scans for TSA and boarding planes now.

I encountered both at DFW/American Airlines for the first time flying home to Sverige.

All the problems of biometric data, but it’s also much slower than scanning a ticket. It took about 7–10 seconds to process instead of a near instantaneous boop.

henryhenderson,
@henryhenderson@mastodon.social avatar

@Jeremiah Global Entry in 2020 switched from passport & fingerprint scan to this. Really scary the first time when a receipt printed out my full name, DOB, etc. I don’t know where they gathered the data to train my face. It definitely wasn’t my Global Entry enrollment photo which was taken on an ancient Logitech webcam by the TSA agent. I assume they can just track everyone through the airport now with names floating above our heads on a screen.

It’s terrifying.
