You gotta think...

If a star ship keeps its "number" when a new one of the same name replaces it...

Like 1701 -> 1701-A, etc.

That means they created 1700 star ships not call "Enterprise" first (after "NX-01").

Why would they do that?

What was the massive lul in ships called "Enterprise" caused by?

highvoltage,
@highvoltage@pleroma.debian.social avatar

@revk What do you mean? They only replaced the Enterprises after one of them were destroyed or became obsolete.

highvoltage,
@highvoltage@pleroma.debian.social avatar

@revk Yes and? There were many many thousands of ships made after that and inbetween the other Enterprises? So where's the lul?

highvoltage,
@highvoltage@pleroma.debian.social avatar

@revk So what would you rather expect? Two ships named Enterprise at the same time? Eg Enterprise 1 and 2? Or that they would sooner obsolete perfectly fine ships?

highvoltage,
@highvoltage@pleroma.debian.social avatar

@revk Also, I suppose that if a ship is your flagship, it probably makes sense to just have one of them out in the field at a time. Also, Star Trek is full of holes, it's easy to overthink things :)

Today I finished my term as Debian Project Leader. It feels almost as surreal as having become DPL in the first place. Thanks to everyone who has shown their confidence, support and assistance over the last four years, and more than that, thank you to everyone who has made Debian better, not only as a Linux distribution, but as a global project that we can be proud of!

Let me frame my question another way: if someone asks an LLM to write some software that does a thing, and that LLM produces either source code or the input to an interpreted language, where does that lie on the free software spectrum?

highvoltage,
@highvoltage@pleroma.debian.social avatar

@mjg59 My 2c? If it's released under a free license then it's /generally/ good enough for me. However, it depends how that LLM learned to write that program. Did it study books from program languages and learn to write code and practiced making programs until it figured it out? Or is it effectively merely processing other people's code and performing some form of plagiarism?

It's 2024, you don't have to say "X formerly known as Twitter" anymore. If someone still doesn't know that, they never will.

We ship too many file systems in Debian grub and I think we probably should drop all except

ext2 for /boot
fat for ESP
hfsplus for ESP on legacy mactel
iso9660 for ISO images
squash4 for the embedded memdisk

No more btrfs, f2fs, jfs, ntfs, xfs, zfs.

Arguably we may be able to drop squash4 too and just compress the files in the memdisk; grub decompresses on open anyhow using file filters.

highvoltage,
@highvoltage@pleroma.debian.social avatar

@juliank Ufh. I really wouldn't want a seperate /boot partition in cases where I use btrfs as /

I know I'm very biased, but I'm really just blown away how easy all my Debian bookworm upgrades are going. Thanks to everyone who made that possible!

    @passthejoe I haven't used flatpak that much but, check if you have a .var directory, I believe flatpack apps store their data there

    You're going to read about the climate heat using these "normal" words but the temp above too hot, is death.

    It doesn't just feel hot, it kills. Thats how hot climate "warming" gets.

    "In Palm Springs — where Friday's high temperature was forecast to hit 116 degrees — many homeless people left to contend with the heat on their own.

    "I don't know how anyone can do it," he said. "I feel so bad . . . there's not much I can do."

    Build sun, wind. All of it, NOW

    How dare they rename gedit to gnome-text-editor! It just doesn't roll as nicely on the alt+f2.

    @juliank NIH from whom? It somehow got installed with my GNOME install on Debian instead of gedit... I'll have to dig deeper into what actually happened here...
