How to track these 100 different chat applications used in different projects/groups at the same time?

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@kushal in my mind, Matrix is now the primary non-proprietary thing.

(And I see a public room for Swedish learners on the matrix.org server)

Sharing in case this helps someone.

The last time someone in our household got Covid, we were able to keep it from spreading to anyone else. ♥️🙏🏿 This time we were not so lucky. My Covid high score streak is finally broken! Rona got me y'all!

Completely unscientific observations of how this thing looks to have beat our mitigations:

Day 0: Contagious. No symptoms. Negative tests.

Day 1: Contagious. Slight symptoms. Negative test.

Day 2: Contagious. More severe symptoms. Positive tests.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke I'm a little sad about this framing.

Of course the point is partly fair: a good sample is needed for good test results.

But suggesting that using self-tests well is not feasible for mere mortals doesn't match my perspective at all. Sure, a lot of people haven't been taught (which is a failure in public communication).

However, in fact it is very easy, given the right type of self-tests, and a minute of instruction, to perform good swabs. Let's frame this as something to learn?

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Learning how to angle that swab is definitely easier than tying shoelaces :)

(And yet, somehow we assume that most people will figure out shoes 🤷)

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke No, I am not personally offended by observations by medical professionals. I have no doubt that medical professionals have been taxed beyond all reason by this pandemic, and done an admirable job dealing with a shitty situation.

But I am offended by public communication on the political level, and in the media.

And personally extremely frustrated that even millions of dead bodies into this situation, levels of public understanding of self tests are still thin.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke (I clearly didn't phrase my thought successfully. My point seems to have come across in a way that I didn't intend.)

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke thank you, and apologies for poor phrasing.
But most importantly: all the best for everyone in your family staying and/or getting well soon!

Las Vegas Strip, Paradise, NV, 2023.

The Strip is best viewed, and experienced, from a distance.

Preliminary version; see down thread for final image.

Note: Not a 16:9 image, so you may need to click the preview to see the whole thing.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mattblaze that is amazing - and indeed seems like an appropriate amount of pixels for that frame

if you use Linux on your personal computer: what do you like about it?

I used to be super into customizing my window manager, but now I mostly like that it's so easy to install software, and that the environment is the same as on a Linux server

(please no arguing about whether people "should" use Linux on their personal computers, I'm just curious about why you personally like it)

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk i like using a system that consists of free software.

First as a matter of principle, but i also enjoy that this means i get less built in surveillance capitalism. And i like that in theory i could fully understand every single aspect of my system (even though in practice i certainly won't).

Help: I remember reading a length, detailed account about ten years ago of how Vietnam war protesters found their way to Canada, i.e., the mechanics of setting up and running informal pipelines. Can't find the copy I printed, can't remember the author's name: pointers would be very welcome.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@gvwilson i assume you've combed the footnotes in https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_immigration_to_Canada and https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_and_the_Vietnam_War for pointers that ring a bell? If not, those might help?

hko,

@kushal good question, now i want to try it too

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@kushal at first sight, the fractal nightly looks pretty nice.

(I use element-web and element-android so far, but of course I'd prefer a sufficiently mature native desktop client instead.)

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@kushal Yes! I'd like that too, for myself.

However, so far, I've (grumblingly) made the tradeoff of running the browser-based client.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@kushal Every now and then I try a different client (just like now, following your impulse here). So far, each time I decided to stick with the browser-tradeoff for a while longer.

But I hope this will change soon :)

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@Cyberpunk @kushal Oh yes, the current nheko version looks pretty nice! Checking it out now (it's been a while since I last tried nheko).

@kushal thank you, that clarifies things for me quite a bit (and I now understand that you were highlighting all the articles from that initial photo).

The situation sounds bad :-/ ... but at the same time, I can't help but feel a little jealous of a country where farmers will try to come out and protest (even in the face of serious repression).

Politically organized workers are amazing to me.

Quick note: If you follow me, you probably noticed that I post occasional photos. Unfortunately, the default display behavior on most Mastodon instances and clients crops many images unless you click on them. I hate this, as does every other photographer here, but it's not likely to change any time soon.

You can disable this broken behavior in the Mastodon web interface by unchecking a box under display preferences.

But in any case, please be aware you might not be seeing the whole photo.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@mattblaze Oh, that is a very good button to know about (and an unfortunate default setting). Thanks!

When you're pondering, covered in cold sweat, how to deal with the whole .zip clusterfsck…

When you're trying to wrap your head around possible new attacks or old ones that are going to now be supercharged because of .zip…

When you're wondering at night, tossing and turning, how to explain to your org the difference between .zip and .zip…

…take solace in the fact that some accountant somewhere is tallying up the profits.

@rysiek this looks almost like an attempt at misdirection - to gesture away from the file archive format.

but ... surely that can't have been the idea?! and even if so, it couldn't have helped the application? i'm so confused.
