The conservative death toll count for Gaza stands at over 28.000 (of Gaza's total population of ~2.3 mio) in the past 4 months.

A majority of the population of Gaza has fled their homes, is suffering shortages of food, water and medical services. Many have lived in temporary shelters for months. Of those, 1.5 mio are said to currently shelter in the Rafah area.

Imagining larger scale military operations in that area is disturbing, to say the least.

@lirontocker Taking another step back: I was quoting the best available numbers, to my knowledge. Framing this as me "quoting Hamas" does not sit entirely well with me.

This is not an excessive spread of chocolate bars.

Just a decadent one.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb indeed, this seems like a very modest selection.

The Dulcey is super weird (and to my mind probably does not make sense to taste in the vicinity of any other bar).

Bonnat are attractive, but also very weird, in that they seem to be very subtle. I suspect that the cocoa solid content is comparatively low. But then, their texture is clearly appealing to many.

I'll be curious to read your thoughts :)

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb Right, I assumed you'd know what you're getting yourself into, with the Dulcey :)

It's interesting. And of course sweet (a kind of thing that mammals tend to enjoy). But this caramel affair is very distinct from "chocolate", to my mind. Both have their place :D

I see what you mean about "chalky". I'm personally not sure how I excited I am about Bonnat. But I think whoever is excited about them will most likely be excited by the texture.
Even their 100% bars tasted "muted", to me.

I absolutely can't fathom how there's a real chance the US, a supposed first world country, will elect Donald Trump again.

As in, his hatred and deranged fuckery seem to be the actual political will of the majority of the people.

How. Just how.

What's wrong with the human brain?

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb this spectacle strikes me as a particularly blatant instance of public discourse being utterly dysfunctional.

I hope we can find out to have a constructive and somewhat reasonable societal/global discourse that can underpin democratic and just societies, some day soon.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@larsmb Are you saying we should resign ourselves to ... damage control within whatever the hell we have now, instead of a system that is built on a sufficiently shared understanding of the world, and rational-ish collective decision-making?

Aaaah yes. That annoying, yet predictable time of year where hegemonics who probably voted for Trump and hated everything MLK jr was about… start posting up vanilla quotes from him in order to deflect and deny their inherent, intense anti-Black hatred.

Please send help in advance. Thank you.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@ErickaSimone new rule: no one gets to post MLK quotes before having spent some time seriously engaging with his "Beyond Vietnam" speech (the historical recording is an amazing document, I can't recommend it enough).

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@ErickaSimone the "beyond" speech impressed me so much, when i slowly understood what it means, and what context it was given in.
It was such an incredibly principled and "obviously tactically wrong" thing to do.

(Of course his other writing and speaking is also mandatory reading and listening)

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@ErickaSimone I often wonder how the world would be different if that generation of black leaders hadn't all been murdered. If they had been able to co-shape our world for another half century or so, as they should have. It's a heartbreaking thought.

Thinking about state violence. And its very uneven public rejection.

Clearly, one of the tricks to living a happy life is not to be part of a marginalized (let alone maligned) group.

(Still, there might be some progress. Rejection of at least some state violence seems to grow more widespread. There's a long way to go, though.)

Back to the Future: The Return of the Ultraliberal Right in Argentina

https://crimethinc.com/Argentina2023

Last week, the extreme right won electoral victories in the Netherlands and Argentina. The global reactionary wave that brought Donald Trump to power did not subside with his electoral loss in 2020.

In this reflection, an Argentine anarchist explores why Javier Milei won the election and situates Milei's politics in historical context. Although Milei's "anarcho-capitalist" rhetoric may seem new, this is just the latest chapter of a story that is very old in Argentina: the combination of cutthroat capitalism with ruthless state violence.

Demonstrators and riot police clash in Argentina in 2017.
Barricades surround the presidential palace in Buenos Aires on December 20, 2001.

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@rysiek Agreed, and/but as I read it, the toot frames Trump as a manifestation of a "global reactionary wave" - which seems fair enough to me?

hko,
@hko@mastodon.social avatar

@rysiek I'm glad that no part of my job description is "framing history and current political events in a helpful way" 😅

I honestly have no idea which framing is "useful" for which purpose (and even more: for which target audience), there.
Decentering the US (and "Western Europe") is one optimization that I definitely see value in. But ... I have no grand unifying idea.

(I'm thinking out loud, ramblingly, not disagreeing.)

In my today

From: Lindsay

Thank you for making it so easy for me to see that you have hacked into 3 of my very own devices throughout the year. I'm going to be holding onto all of my finds that have your name all over it and not by me because I have absolutely no reason to hack my own belongings. I will be adding this to stuff I have already for my attorney.
