If Apple's afraid of eating into Mac sales by putting macOS on iPad, just put the Hypervisor and Virtualization frameworks on iPadOS so third parties like Parallels can virtualize Windows 11 or Linux instead. Windows, at least, is much better suited for a touchscreen than macOS is. Let the developer/userbase validate the concept if you won’t — is a virtual desktop good or bad for the iPad platform?

i_am_fabs,
@i_am_fabs@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I think the issue is that if that happens, Apple’s services revenue would (potentially) decline because virtualized apps are not using the App Store (30% cut). Modern Apple would never 😐

After 10 long years, everyone can FINALLY experience my Nintendo emulator @delta!

This is honestly a dream come true, and I hope everyone enjoys replaying their favorite retro games 💜

If all macOS 15 does is remove that stupid emoji-palette-blocking autocomplete popup that Sonoma added, I will be happy. Adding an extra step to something I do a hundred times a day, without giving an option to turn it off? Genius.

It's even better that invoking the keyboard shortcut twice bypasses it… — except when it doesn't have an emoji to autocomplete, and then the double-shortcut presents then immediately dismisses the emoji palette instead

I do not envy Apple PR this year. Every single release and the usual excitement around new products has been mixed with or even buried under a veritable torrent of regulation and lawsuit news.

@sdw 100% self-inflicted 🤷‍♂️

Apple's EU fine today shows why the DMA is important, too — it took Spotify eight+ years to challenge a single clause of Apple's developer agreement, and only for a single category of app (music players).

It shows just how much other developers would have to fight to make these improvements available to every app through individual legal actions, and how infeasible it is.

The DMA tackles a whole swath of Apple’s illegal (and now definitively ruled ‘illegal’) rules in one go, for everybody

I thought Vision Pro coming to other countries was an 'end of the year' thing, but no, I've had a whole bunch of people tell me it might be coming a lot sooner, like ‘pre-WWDC’ sooner https://mastodon.social/@macrumors/111884222560373013

i_am_fabs,
@i_am_fabs@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith given that they all are available in the US within 2-3 weeks … Apple has to add other countries to have enough demand

I think I'll do a big round of focused polish on Ice Cubes. I want to fix all the minor visual glitches and improve the existing features.

i_am_fabs,
@i_am_fabs@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian would it be possible to open a list as the default view? That is the biggest missing feature for me

i_am_fabs,
@i_am_fabs@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian it seems that on some startups it hasn’t loaded the lists (because the picker is empty/has no lists) … maybe then it reverts to the local timeline?

gruber, to random
@gruber@mastodon.social avatar

I’m surprised the setup process for every new iPhone still asks whether you want to use FaceID with a mask when 99+% of people aren’t wearing face masks any more. There are lots of features that a small percentage of people use, but they don’t get asked in the device setup process.

I’ve made a successful Mastodon client, I love it here but I’m still very active on X and I also love it there. People are shitting over X all days on my timeline on Mastodon but nobody cares about Mastodon on X. I would say maybe it’s time to stop shitting on everything else than Mastodon here.

i_am_fabs,

@gruber meta’s tracking pixel is embedded in millions of websites. GDPR prevents illegal tracking without the users consent by Facebook all over the web for EU citizens. Tracking that is then used by meta in its products to target advertising.

i_am_fabs,

@stroughtonsmith does it? It’s just an extension to Instagram with 2 billion users. 50m is nothing really.

Threads is the most fun, most interesting new product of the year, and no one in the E.U. can use it, or will be able to use it anytime soon, because their own elected officials passed a law that effectively bans it.

Nice job. Have fun over here in the library.

i_am_fabs,
@i_am_fabs@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber that’s a really bad take. Having a general data protection law is important. But have fun over there where meta does violate your basic human rights. 🫠

I won't lie: I'm intrigued by Instagram's ActivityPub-compatible Threads app and I think more services using the protocol can only be a good thing.

So, posting my Instagram profile here while I wait for Threads to go live. Recommended if you're into pictures of food, Italy, and dogs 🍝 🇮🇹 🐶

PSA for anyone who uses Gmail but wants a good native Mac app, Mimestream is finally out of beta an 1.0 launched! Yah, it is subscription, no, I dont care! Easiest $30 I’ve spent on software in ages! If you use Gmail for work, especially, this is my favorite way of using it and it is a terrific Mac app. Totally with the $30/$50 a year for me personally. https://mimestream.com/blog/mimestream-launches
