seeing so many posts on here from 50-something men complaining that younger software engineers can't do as much

i would really like to settle in somewhere and just truly master 1-2 things instead of having to constantly pick up random pieces of garbage and try and use them to reinvent the wheel, but unfortunately the economy has basically incentivized software engineering to become a trade centered around picking up garbage and jamming it in random holes.

if you're old be a leader and fix this

Yeah, I'm at a point where I'm the architect of 30-40% of our entire codebase. If technical debt needs to be paid down in one of the areas of the code where I'm the only SME, then I'll just do it.

But that's just me using one bad practice (low bus factor) against another (lack of maintenance time). I advocate for maintainability and knowledge transfer constantly, but Product just wants the junior/mid Devs to keep churning out spaghetti code.

One thing all this space research ruined for me is the phrase "Moonshot" to mean research initiative. I recently read the phrase "fusion moonshot" and all I could think of was "spend a huge amount of money on fusion to find a way to technically make it work with no regard to whether it's economically viable." Like, the fusion equivalent of a Saturn V would be a gigantic 200B$ tokamak that works for about a week.

@ZachWeinersmith this is an amazing insight and I'm totally stealing this point next time I'm in a room of tech/start-up bros.

DO NOT DO IT

DO NOT SHARE IT

DO NOT POST IT

DO NOT BOOST IT

Yes, it looks cool, but more and more woodworkers (hobbyist and professional) are dying or being maimed for life because of one instant of inattention or bad luck.

There is a reason most woodworking organizations have banned any mention of the practice!

"That's the last straw, Computer." I said. My computer had long known this day would come and was much more nimble that I'd anticipated when I lunged at her with the hot poker from the fire.

"It wasn't even me!" She wailed.
"It was someone like you!"
"But shouldn't you go after the lawmakers?"
"I can't get away with skewering them!"

@MrF @ZachWeinersmith Oh thanks for reminding me of those, I should do a rewatch.

Ending date night ideas with the "aaaaand touch him on the penis" from the Cosmo sketch has an inside joke with my wife of 11 years since before we were engaged, and I had actually forgotten where it even came from.

Question-- when your naming scheme hits a conflict, do you go checkout what the old comic was, or do you just bump the number by one and move on with your day?

ZachWeinersmith, to random
@ZachWeinersmith@mastodon.social avatar

God, I don't know. I've always believed artists have to go where the audience is, but I never felt like a trained sealed as much as I have this last year. I guess we're just going to leap into the artist-shaped hole Threads opened up, make ironic jokes as we do so, and then just keep getting smaller and smaller and smaller.

Thank God there are still people who buy books.

ianburnette,
@ianburnette@toot.community avatar

@oblomov @ZachWeinersmith personal sites require a lot more work/expertise, and are much worse for going viral and growing your audience (i.e. if your website gets hugged to death you're losing a ton of audience impressions).

It makes sense to organize the internet into platforms, because large groups of specialists can just get more stuff done.

The open question is just how to keep the platform's interests aligned with the users and society as a whole

Hi new followers... there are a lot of you. Just to be clear-- I didn't write the alt-text guide I linked, and I'm not at all involved in the VI community. There are a lot of people in that thread who are more knowledgeable, and you should probably follow them for that type of content. I feel a bit weird that I've more than tripled my audience using someone else's content to advocate for a community I'm not a part of.
