    @AAKL I don’t think that’s how passkeys work. Biometrics here are used by iOS to unlock the passkeys “vault” the same way they’re used to unlock the password manager vault during traditional login. The credentials (username/password, or passkey) are then passed on to the app/website for login.

    It looks like StandardNotes is joining forces with Proton.

    "Our intention has always been to build a small, sustainable organization that helps protect your right to keep personal information private and preserve your freedom to think, speak, and act. Joining with Proton—one of the rare organizations that can (and is willing) to take a long-term approach—gives us the best opportunity to achieve this ambition."

    we've been saving for several years and finally bought a house. one of the first things I took care of was getting AT&T Fiber. Internet first, actually move furniture later.

    Loving it so far.

    (We have it at the rental place but just the 1000/1000 package. it's been solid for 4 years.)

    Concerning

    As you walk by, "The sign collects a [cell phone] device’s unique address, which is encrypted before it’s sent back to Soofa, the company said. Soofa described the collection as “passive.”"

    Soofa tries hard to convince people there is no threat because THEY don't share with 3rd parties, but only turn the information over to the municipalities.

    Beyond that, though, they can't assure that governments won't share, nor can they vouch for how well municipalities will protect the data.

    Very concerning as a privacy issue.

    At least the Germans get it.

    “While most countries want to introduce new surveillance laws, Germany is taking the opposite approach: The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) has published a draft bill that will require email, messenger and other cloud providers to use strong end-to-end encryption.”

    It looks like Mastodon Groups are in the works. I wonder what that would look like. Would it cover services on ActivityPub other than Mastodon? Does any microblogging platform out there already offer a similar feature?

    If anyone has insights, please enlighten us!

    @pl I’m not familiar with Twitter’s Lists. Are List members able to interact in any way “within” their common List or is the whole purpose just account aggregation for others to easily follow?

    ilyess,
    @ilyess@mastodon.online avatar

    @Neblib yeah it would be really nice if other ActivityPub services can join the party.

    Signal: You can now completely hide your phone number from everyone, including people you’re already talking to^1.

    Telegram: You can now share your phone number with everyone, including total strangers^2.

    Choose wisely.

    @Decentralize you’re probably referring to the phone number requirement. If that’s important to you then yes, neither of them is a good fit. There’s no argument there.

    is being temporarily blocked in Spain. Will this trigger an uptick in account registration?

    "Spain's High Court has ordered the suspension of messaging app Telegram's services in the country after media companies complained it was allowing users to upload their content without permission"

    https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/high-court-orders-temporary-suspension-telegrams-services-spain-2024-03-23/

    @YoisakiKanade yeah, who knows where most of Spanish Telegram users will end up after this suspension. My bet would be Whatsapp to be honest, since it's very popular in Europe in general. Which app do you think will attract them?

    The World Wide Web turned 35 this year! But its creator is profoundly disappointed in what it turned into.

    "There are two [...] issues to address. The first is the extent of power concentration, which contradicts the decentralised spirit I originally envisioned. [...] the second, the personal data market that has exploited people’s time and data with the creation of deep profiles that allow for targeted advertising"

    @shaedrich@mastodon.online avatar

    Are there websites that actually respect the ("Do not track") browser signal?

    ilyess,
    @ilyess@mastodon.online avatar

    @shaedrich Nah I doubt it. It just makes your browser fingerprint more identifiable since DNT is turned off by default in most browsers.

    ilyess,
    @ilyess@mastodon.online avatar

    @shaedrich I wish I were, believe me. But DNT doesn't work as you'd expect and no business is required to comply with it. Global Privacy Control is an effort to revisit the issue and come up with a better solution. See their FAQ regarding DNT: https://globalprivacycontrol.org/faq

    ilyess,
    @ilyess@mastodon.online avatar

    @shaedrich That's a good question. They seem to imply that DNT was "too vague" and thus couldn't accurately represent users' intent? So I'm assuming GPC spec is an improvement in this regard, which could make it easier for law makers to enforce?

    Yeah, it's not legally binding. I'm not aware of any anti-tracking browser setting that's legally binding across the board. We're still stuck with cookie banners on which most users readily hit the "yeah sure, get out of my way" button.
