Hey! I'm one of those tech guys that goes for outdoorsy stuff when not doing smart home stuff, e.g.. It's fun to pick up badges through life. Ancient philosophy, full time rv'ing, 3D printing, family hangin', and mentoring, among other badges, are important on my vest.

A police officer told me today that the driver of a semi truck didn’t need to provide me with insurance info following damage from a small rock falling off said semi truck and onto my vehicle. “This stuff happens,” he said.

I had the opportunity to work with the awesome folks at Royal Children’s Hospital, and later the whole Precinct. And the in-house coffee was fantastic, especially after a go-live.

I’ve heard from some, but disagree that air in the is cleaner. Due to the crop spray chemicals moving through the air, my nose is on fire after going outside this morning.

It’s ok, this will pass. Then comes the burning of leaves, daily, by the local government and some surrounding people.

I miss the regulated city life sometimes.

Today, we find out that tax softwares have given Meta access to our financial data.

I wish privacy was a priority for US lawmakers.

Unfortunately, we only hold special sessions to restrict women's reproductive rights.

Wait, that was yesterday. Sorry, got distracted.

There are lots of guides for how to optimise your iPhone battery life. I want to know how to do the opposite and impact battery health quickly.

Why? I’ve and iPhone on 80% battery health, which has AppleCare, and Apple won’t replace the battery until the health is 79% or lower.

It’s been on 80% three months and I’m only keeping extended AppleCare running until the battery is replaced.

All optimisation is off. We have an app open looping content 24x7. And we charge / discharge all the time. So any tips on how to negatively affect the health are welcome!

@imwiththecats@mastodon.social avatar

@mdb @rob I’m late to the party here, but this is the answer. Bonus points if you can stream the videos over cellular!

I’ve never eaten so much battery life expectancy on a phone as when I had it in that situation.

Anyone else a fan of ReBoot?

@retroist Oh man, I tried to rewatch it based on nostalgia. I didn’t make it far. Still appreciate it for that bit of overlap we had in the universe.

It’s been 2 months, and I’ve finally moved the temporary set up (solderless breadboard) to a properly soldered board with terminals.

I still love the USB ports I added, makes it so easy to share power on the top shelf.

Have been looking at here and there. It /feels/ like 60% crypto bros, 20% languages I can’t read (and no built in translation), 8% erotica/edgy, 10% right wing “fuck the government”, and 2% shitposting.

Oh, and I saw a recipe for a super heavy Mac and cheese bake.

It sounds like is more fun. And Mastodon is definitely more engaging than Nostr right now.

Getting the opportunity to try as of today. Immediate impressions are favorable. I’m digging the ideas of automated tab cleanup and spaces.

It’s super clean looking, too, due to the heavy focus on a sidebar rather than a top bar.

Oh, and think I’m going to like having CMD + T not only launch a new tab, but also act as a Launchy-esque in-browser launcher.

I agree with this fwiw. I think there is a place for both and I’m not leaving Mastodon. But it is objectively true that Bluesky is fun and Mastodon is much less so. Earnestness has a place but lots of us are online to have fun. https://www.wired.com/story/bluesky-is-fun/

So I was ripping up, er, salvaging parts from, that old PC earlier today, and tonight I’ve found a use for the front usb ports.

Tada, my usb-powered camera no longer has a cord that hangs low, that wobbles to and fro. I had some extra amps, so I added the dual port USB to the breadboard.

Now it’s tucked away on the top shelf, where the spaghetti mess can’t be seen.

I haven’t jailbroken an iOS device in years. I used to write blog content on the subject and be a keen experimenter of jailbreak tweaks.

Saw that the current firmware can now be jailbroken. Might dip my toes in once more and see what’s changed since the days of Cydia.

@imwiththecats@mastodon.social avatar

@rob Ooooo, I’m a former jailbreaker, too. Super tempting. But then again, there have been pros to stock. Pray thee tell what your experience is like!

imwiththecats,
@imwiththecats@mastodon.social avatar

@rob You brought back nightmares of being in traffic, GPS running, and, BOOM, respring. Ha.

I used to use PDAnet a fair amount, to tether multiple devices on airplane “one device at a time” Wi-Fi. I traveled more then, though.

And BiteSMS was a winner until it was deprecated.

Otherwise, I’m kind of with ya. Not much stands out immediately.

Sooo did you pull the trigger and JB again? :-)

It’s been a while, but today I’m doing some needed server hardware changes. I moved and off my RPi4. Scrypted moved to an add on in my deployment, and HB to an RPi Zero W I had sitting around.

Now I can finally make a proper Cat TV with the pi 4! Happy !

imwiththecats,

@iridella Oh, gotcha! Are you going to rip and replace Google Home or supplement it to make it more useful / stable?

I'm more of the latter, using it to supplement Apple Home / Siri. It's so nice using HA / Node RED for automations compared to the Apple-native options.

Crazy how some days I sit in my driveway in my car wondering how I even have a job at all, but then someone asks me a question on email that I actually know the answer to it and I realize that I will have a job this week. It’s been back-and-forth like that for 15 years

imwiththecats,

@shanselman The smartest people either know the answer, or they know they don’t.

feditips, to random
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

I don't think people are realising the danger the Fediverse is in.

The only thing stopping corporations and VCs taking over this place is that the Fediverse is spread out on many different servers, which makes it very difficult to purchase.

If most of the Fediverse ends up on mastodon.social, which is now a strong possibility, there will be nothing to stop most of it being sold to Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever.

The bigger mastodon.social becomes, the more likely a buyout is to happen.

(1/4)

imwiththecats,
@imwiththecats@mastodon.social avatar

@foolishowl @philheppenstall @feditips I’ve been the guy that argued “let’s just explain it better” or “users just need better instruction”. But it doesn’t work that way for many people; they have (better) things to worry about in their lives, and choosing a social network instance to join may not sound as fun as just joining a social network to interact with people.

A proper goal IMO is to squash the learning curves rather than increase documentation.
