Just had the realization that I’m the go-to person for so many people I know for tech support (esp. if it is Apple-related) and that I am thus forced to essentially be my own tech support b/c I don’t have a film_girl to ask.

isaiah,
@isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl this has been such a constant in my life that i can’t even begin to imagine how life would be otherwise.

that being said it has been really nice to raise two nerdy awesome mini-me’s who adeptly handle the windows/gamer/gen-z questions now.

i’m slowly training myself out of a job. and im ok with that.

"Today, developers compete on a level playing field on the App Store”

LOL 🙃

It’s difficult to tell whether this is marketing spin, legal CYA, or if there are executives at apple who actually believe this obvious laughable disinformation nonsense.

I used to wonder the same thing when they made statements about the cursed butterfly keyboard.

@twostraws but please have some sympathy or even pity on those within this system. chronic pain is really no fun, no matter where you are, but here it’s pretty bleak. and there’s little we can do about it other than than emigration.

positive me: i’m grateful apple changed course and will continue to support PWAs. it’s the best for users.

neutral me: web tech works so much better/faster on android. i kind of hope apple gets the message that they need to improve PWA’s on iOS.

cynical me: apple planned this. they never intended to kill PWA’s. they needed an excuse to force PWA’s to run in Safari/WebKit — hobbling them with slow JS. by threatening to kill PWA’s it makes us willing to accept this limitation as a net positive.

    still cleaning up after fixing super weird bug -- but the problem is deeply confusing.

    in an NSView with many subviews i draw a simple (partial) background color in -(void)drawRect:(NSRect)dirtyRect;

    to avoid redrawing everything i only NSRectFill in the NSIntersectRect of the partial background rect and the dirtyRect and only when that intersection isn't empty.

    with this code in place the whole view hierarchy fails to render anything -- except in the view debugger. no exceptions thrown.

    I'm perennially grateful for and awed by the job Wilco & Billy Bragg did on the Mermaid Avenue discs. Such great music, saving such great lyrics from obscurity. This is the one I'm playing and singing now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNMfOwA6qUo

    @gedeonm @nilrog ok, i just got to know… what the heck is dog mode?

    @gedeonm @nilrog that’s totally amazing and yeah… everything should have that. it seems like an obvious feature that’s mostly software.

    that said my car won’t even stay cool with the engine running if it’s stopped on a hot day in Texas. it needs to have way more airflow over the radiator than the little fan can provide.

    nearly daily i get wrong-number/account messages. invariably, it's some kid and no matter what i say, the person doesn't believe me. they ALWAYS think i'm their friend named Isaiah just fucking with them.

    i have a lot of questions, but mostly: why are there so many Isaiahs fucking with their friends all the time. wtf?

    also: is there something i can say to a 12 year old kid that's equivalent to, "sorry, i think you've got the wrong number." because that shit doesn't compute anymore.

    Unpopular opinion: it's the EU's fault that Progressive Web Apps are disabled on iOS. People expect Apple to jump through hoops to preserve something they don't prioritize. Why? If PWAs are important to the EU they should grant Apple an unambiguous permission to continue hosting them in WebKit-only if they choose to.

    isaiah,
    @isaiah@mastodon.social avatar

    @danielpunkass hard pass.

    allowing apple to utilize anticompetitive position to attack their competitors hurts us all -- not just in PWAs, but innovation and competition in general. saving PWAs on iOS isn't worth that.

    apple has for far too long been allowed to use the moral high ground of privacy to create an unlevel playing field.

    my unpopular opinion: anticompetitive action (or inaction) needs to be thwarted even when the costs are high.

    One thing I've noticed, as I stay home, isolated, feeling relatively fine, but nonetheless testing positive, is that MOST people think I'm weird.

    For staying home. For isolating. Because "it's been so long, you're not contagious."

    I would never disrespect anybody, let alone the most vulnerable, by assuming I should be out in the world as usual, while positive.

    isaiah,

    i keep flipping back and forth on the idea of personas.

    on one hand it seems like a potential vector to impersonate someone.

    on the other hand AI is probably not far from being able to generate realtime deep-fakes of everyone. so this is just the first taste of realtime impersonation

    the person we’re looking at and hearing might not be at all who they seem to be. i don’t really like that idea but i think it’s coming whether we like it or not.

    hey nerds,
    did you guys study automata theory for your CS degrees?
    i didn’t — but i’m trying to learn a bit.
    i’ve been reading along with my kid’s class and it’s very neato stuff but i don’t get the lectures, just the rather dense textbook.
    anyone know any awesome resources for upper decision CS theory type stuff?

    isaiah,

    @tapforms yep. that makes sense. i used build encoders/decoders and detectors for networking wireless and magnetic spinning hard drives.
    but hardware makes use of FSMs pretty much everywhere.
